After installing PP1 and the HP update, I opted to load the new add-ins, including the PVConnect Add-in. I have a lot of media in my shares, about 16,000 songs, 8,000 pictures, and 1,000 videos.

Looking at Task Manager on my Server desktop I see wmccds.exe (Windows Media Connect) using 127MB of memory, and bouncing between 0% - 85% CPU usage. I also see TwonkyMediaServer.exe (PVConnect) using 120MB of memory, and bouncing between 0% - 70% CPU usage (appears to be alternating with WMC). The net result is my CPU is pegged at 100%.

Do both of these really need to be running at the same time for media sharing? Can't I decide which I'd rather use and shut the other off? If so, why the heck didn't HP make note of that with their release?

Sure, turn off the one you don't want to share with. PV should be more featured than old WMC 2.0. Also, when PV finishes indexing your media the load should settle down. There's a fair bit of discussion here about this if you'd like more info...

Indeed I would. After turning off sharing form the console under Settings, Media Sharing, I notice that my server still shows up as a Windows Media Connect device, it just isn't sharing anything. Ideally I'd shutoff WMC entirely, unless PVConnect relies on it somehow.

I have shut off WMC from Control Panel/Administrative Services/Services. The only after-effect is that I get warnings from WHS that the service isn't running. No way to ignore the message.

Hmmmm.....seems like a less-than-elegant solution. Not sure I'd want to get constantly bugged about it being off. There must be a setting somewhere that tells console what to bug you about.

there is a media connect bat and reg file in the PVconnect folder that turns off media connect, from what I read in another topic. I ran both.

And I take it that after running both you don't get nagged by the console that the WMC service isn't running? If so, that sounds like the way to go.

yeah never got that message. the only issue i had was that I needed to upgrade my console after the PP1 update and that I didnt install Mcfee. The reason that I didnt install it is that I have dial up at my house and my server isnt connected to the internet. if I need something I go to starbucks or work download it on my laptop and install when I get home. my laptop has its own protection already installed.

disable-wmc.bat
disable-wmc.reg

Cool, I'll give those a shot tonight. No use having multiple media streamers active, sucking up resources. I don't suppose they included an enable batch file on the odd chance I'd ever want to go back? If not, I could probably crack it open to see what they did so that it can be undone if necessary.

So, that batch file only contains two lines:

WHSIntegrator -stopwmc
regedit /s disable-wmc.reg

Oddly enough, the first line actually fails to execute, because there is no WHSIntegrator in the path that can be called. In fact, there is no file (executable or not) anywhere on the system partition with that name. So I just opened up services.msc and stopped the service that way (it was running, but already marked as disabled because the reg file successfuly ran).

The second calls the registry file, which simply sets the service to disabled.

I'm a bit surprised that the batch file didn't just execute a couple of SC commands, such as:

sc stop WMConnectCDS
sc config WMConnectCDS start= disabled

BTW - No yellow warning for me, all green :D

I have the PVConnect and WebGuide Add-Ins installed. I understand these are replacements for WMC. Is that correct?

Correct, PVConnect is intended as a WMC replacement. Apparently is supports a broader set of media types. In my case, I share my media with my Xbox 360, and PVConnect was not able to produce the thumbnail preview images for videos that sharing with WMP11 can, so I uninstalled PVConnect and installed WMP11 instead, very happy with it.

So does WMP11 cause wmccds.exe to behave in the same way as you indicated in the first post? So far WebGuide has been working for me but then I'm using it only for getting to my music and pictures remotely. I'm not streaming anything to a media extender in the house.

Is the PV connect or Windows Media server apps really necessary if your using Vista Media Center? I just told Media Center to look on the server for media and *poof* there it all is. Pretty slick!
