Most of the posts relating to this subject are a little dated.
I have just got my EX475 back up and running

I am now interested in media streaming, mostly to my android device. Is this possible? If so can someone outline the steps? Is remote potato still the preferred method? (not that i know what that is yet)

Also, what are the steps to get remote access? I initially had it set up using xxx.homeserver.com but from reading the manual it seems like this expired after 1 year since i know i dint pay for a domain name.

thanks for any help

I've moved away from my EX495 for storage and streaming, I only use it for backing up PCs. I'm running an HP Microserver running Ubuntu, with software RAID for the storage. It streams my movies in the home to my Xbox, streams music in the home via LogitechMediaServer, and music outside the home via Subsonic. I don't stream videos outside the home. You could do those same apps on WHS if you wanted to.

For remote access I have my own domain and keep my IP updated via a DDNS script.

a cheap alternative for connecting a tv is to buy a amazon firestick 4k($49.00??) and install KODI(free) and set it to read the server.
It connects to the hdmi port.
No streaming software needed.
But I would advise to get the wired dongle for the firestick.
A good resource is troypoint.com

Since you are not streaming, depending on the file type saved on the server you may get buffering with wifi.
as far as android I only have iphone and apple tablet that works.
But you could look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmmnAdmPv48
But on the server you probably will need to set guest access.
Currently I have migrated to a NAS to store my media.

For remote access you probably need a dynamic ip web service. The ones already on the server are end of life now.
Or you could setup port forwarding on your router
portforward.com
