HI All,

I am considering getting my first media box / player.

I am considering these are present in terms of affordability, portabiliy and features:

Asus o play hd2
A C Ryan Playon HD mini
Popbox v8

My set up would be to play files from a external hdd to either a crt tv or hd tv.

I know that all those systems can downmix the latest HD audio to stereo, and play all the most common formats, and I don't wish are present to connect to the internet for either initial setup or for it to functional.

I completely understand that kind of limit things, but all i essentially want to do is play movie from a external hdd. Any firmware update would be done via a usb flash drive with a file downloaded from the internet

I was strongly considering the Popbox V8, but read that you would require an internet for the initial setup, and then on occasion when trying to play a movie and you didn't have internet connection it wouldn't allow you to continue

But I would like to know people opinion of these system, i understand each person has they fav but understanding the pros and cons would be great, as some have great UI and other don't, some have issue playing back MKV file, and subtitling

Also the type of file I would be playing would generally be no bigger that 5/6 gigabytes in size current;u most are around 1 - 3 gigabytes, would any of these systems have problem playing these.

Any feedback would be great.

Regards,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Sorry, I somehow completely missed this post. Did you ever make a decision on what to get?

Well, all 3 of them don't support forced subtitles (not sure what your setup is like).

I have the Popbox V8, Dune TV 301, Mede8er 500x2 and 1000X32, Dune Smart D1, Dune BD Prime, PCH A400, etc... I think for you (from what you are saying you would just have smaller sized files, so not full BD rips) and aren't reliant on network streaming, just about all the players should cover your needs (with the v8, TV101, and 400x2 being the most affordable). As far as UI they are all pretty similar (nothing great or fancy with the stock UI). If you want to use a jukebox with any of them you will need to either manage first from a PC or have the player connected to the internet to download posters/nfo
