Well I finally got with the 21st (20th) century and bought a HD TV and some blu-rays to play on my Dune Smart B1. Of course the next thing I want to do is rip those blu-rays to the homeserver. Having read lots of articles and forum posts I have a couple of questions.

The info I read all seems to be about 2 years old so is AnyDVD-HD + Clown BD still a good way to go or are there better options on the market now such as DVDFab's Blu-ray ripper?

I only want the main movie on the server so what is the best format to save the rip in?

Thanks in advance for the help.

anydvd is still a top choice.
To bad they don't offer lifetime membership anymore.

I have been using MakeMKV and it works well. If I chose to convert the MKV format to another format I found FreeMake Video Converter to work well.

Everyone has their favorite software to use for ripping so hopefully others will chime in with their favorite recommendations be the software they use or the video fomat of choice.

AnyDVD + Clown_BD is still king IMO. I just don't trust MakeMKV enough to use (for mkv I would rather use Clown_BD + mkvmerge)

Damian,

Thanks for the info. You've always had good advice before so I'll take it again!

No problem. Don't get me wrong, MakeMKV is a fantastic program, but I do know that periodically people run into issues with blu ray mkvs created by MakeMKV. IMO mkvmerge is the go to app for mkv creation. For my Blu rays now I have pretty much just switched over to main movie blu ray folder rips (Using AnyDVD + Clown_BD) and have had great success. The only downside versus going with a single file like an mkv is that if you are looking to play your movies on mobile devices then blu-ray folder rips won't work (and not many transcoding programs as of now support)

Ok, so I managed to get a Blu-ray ripped and all seems well but i'd just like to check two things based on the Clown BD wiki http://www.mediasmartserver.net/wiki/index.php/Clown_BD.

1. In step 2 where is says you can select the playlist how exactly do you do that? Is it just a matter of clicking on one of the lines so that it is highlighted?

2. Are there reasons to choose .ts over .m2ts or vice-versa? I read that the only difference is header info but that .m2ts is native to Blu-rays.

Thanks again for the help.

1. Yes, just select the playlist.

2. Instead choose Blu-ray Folder (as opposed to .ts or .m2ts). If you go with a single ts/m2ts file you will lose chapter support.

Yeah, I also use ClownBD + AnyDVD HD, and it has worked excellent so far. I've got one BD movies, which I had to rip with MakeMKV since ClownBD wasn't able to rip it for some unknown reason. I've been trying to access the AnyDVD HD website, and I keep getting 500-Internal Server Error since yesterday!
