Hello, I have a pretty basic issue which is probably more of an iTunes problem than WHS. But I think I will have much better luck getting an answer from this community than from an Apple genius. In a nutshell, the problem is this: in iTunes I see multiple copies of each song in my library. I see the local copy on the pc and I see two copies of the same song that mediacollector has put on the MSS. (I have three computers which feed the MSS library using media collector). I'd like to see just one copy of each song in iTunes. Any suggestions?

Do you also have iTunes installed on your MSS?

This is indeed more of an apple question than a WHS question.
you should change your itunes to a single source to serve all of your media to the three computers instead of a mish-mash of songs here and there (or used a shared library)

Change itunes on all three computers so they only looks to the WHS for the library content.

Delete the songs from the three desktop computers (not from WHS)

Delete and recreate the libraries on the three computers so they only use the WHS.

I agree that putting all the songs on a single computer would be "easier", but it defeats the purpose of Mediacollector doesn't it?

As for putting all the music on MSS and deleting it from the other computers, this is what I did originally. But then I discovered that MSS doesn't create back-ups of files on the MSS, which makes maintaining the music solely on MSS a risky proposition.

(illegalprelude: yes, I'm running iTunes on MSS)

You can enable Duplication, and use the Server Backup feature to mitigate the risk, these are both built-in features in WHS though the Server Backup is not able to be scheduled for automatic backup.

Then share out your library on the WHS Itunes copy (under preferences - "share my library on the network" should be checked).

Delete the local itunes libraries from the three computers and only point the new library to the WHS shared version.

I have a question. All my music is in the music folder located in my server. It is organized in hundreds of sub folders. Anybody knows how can I create playlists in Itunes that automatically sync with each of the music folders in my server? Thanks for your help.

welcome to the WHS forum...

Sync is a concept I dont know if Itunes has. You can add the "music" folder to your library and all underlying folders will be added automatically.

Keeping it up to date is another story - I've always just re-added the music folder after putting new music out there.
