May I also be the "newbie" to ask how the backup data is stored and additionally how can you recover it?

So for example, I do a full backup... But then a single file becomes corrupt or mistakenly deleted. How do I recover such an item from the backup?

Or is it meant purely for the sake of disaster recovery and a backup restoration? If so has anyone tinkered around with the restore routines?

In the console....

    1. Open Backup tab
    2. Open the Client you want to recover a file for
    3. Open the date desired
    4. Select and open the disk desired (in Vista you may have to respond to the UAC a couple times)
    5. *** WAIT - BE PATIENT HERE ***
    6. Navigate to the folder desired
    7. Drag the desired file(s) and/or folder(s) you want to restore.

And YES, you can recover individual files!

ok... the idiot factor kicks in so hopefully you won't mind clarifying a bit...

Within the WHS console, I see that if the drive is mounted, I can right click to view the backups and see the available dates... On the bottom I see a restore or delete option.

Within steps 3-7, are you saying that I can double click on them and that it will let me see the contents of the backup as the WHS console will pass through a link to me from the MSS to access the contents instead of doing the full restore as it mentions?

I guess I just don't see just yet, and don't want to be dangerous enough yet to take the "risk" of doing something that may otherwise reset the contents of my drive.

If you could clarify it would be appreciated... Screen shots would be a plus, or a wiki topic added for restoration with these items would be phenominal!

Thanks in advance!

Oh, you mean restore a backup of the backup files, not restore a backup of your PC?
Haven't tried that yet, I don't have an external drive to plug in that's big enough to hold my backup.

To RESTORE backup files from a backup (NOT A PC BACKUP).....

you have to select the FOLDER to restore. There are no options to restore an individual file.

you can restore ONLY the files from the backup that aren't already on the server, or you can delete all contents of the server folder, and restore all the files from that backup . . .

Works both ways.

(Sorry, was out a couple days there....)

I did not realize you were trying to restore backups of the backups...
