Does this error message mean that the target drive has crapped out? Doing a BDBB backup before adding a drive to the system and suspect that the backup drive has gone south.

Jim

EDIT: Has happened 2x times now when the backup hits 22%.

Could be either the target drive has issues, the source drive has issues, the file being copied has corruption, or some other I/O system hiccup. Unfortunately it's hard to tell what is the ultimate issue. :(

Just have to keep removing the Variables 1 by 1 . if you can reproduce it consistently you will find the problem.

I'm sure this is going to be an easy one...
I set the parameter in BDBB 1.0.3.3 to enable WHS Backups to be duplicated, but changed my mind after a couple of days and unchecked the box and thought that would automatically delete any duplicates that had been created.

But there is still a backup of the BU Database sitting on my server somewhere as I can tell that from the size of the System area - can someone tell me where that duplicate copy is and how I delete it please so I can recover the space?

For clarity - my BU Database is 618gb as reported in the Console under Server Storage and my System area is 1.2TB - I would have expected that to be around 638gb - ie one extra backup size for the BDBB I keep and 20gb for the System - but it appears there another Backup on there as well from when I had Backups duplication turned on. In the {889xxx folder there is only the current BDBB folder for the copy of the backup database and in the {00008086xxx folder there are the files for the current WHS Backup of the clients) - where else should I be looking to manually delete the extra copy of the WHS backup database?

Bodog, WHS should clear that space on it's own, though I've seen reports that it can take some time. How long have you waited so far?

Edit: Sounds like you made a BDBB backup to Server Storage as well?

About 12 hours - so should I just let it run for a while and see if it recovers the space? Sounds like the copy is not in any readily accessible folder
Yes - at 618gb my Client backup database is too big for my 500gb USB drive so I just use pool storage

Server Storage backups will contribute to the System total space, that's why you see 1.2TB. That should go down to ~600GB once WHS gets rid of the duplicates. I'd personally recommend waiting for WHS to fix itself rather than go deleting the duplicates. You can try toggling the setting, rebooting server, etc.

A warning from you is all I need to stay well clear of "fiddling" :) - I will try a reboot and see if that helps it along

and as predicted a "reboot of WHS" has fixed it - it's now reporting System space as 642gb
All fixed now

Does this this add in allow me to restore the backed up database to a fresh install of WHS? Will WHS see the client computer associations?

I am wanting to wipe my server and start fresh, but I really don't want to lose my client backups. Will this work?

Yup, that's pretty much one of the main use cases. Definitely check out the README and Wiki article if you've not yet done so.

Sure does - just did it recently - of course you need to make sure you keep the folder with all the files on a non WHS drive and do the restore using WHS BDBB - and of course create the same clients on the new WHS

I had some backups of client machines that I no longer have access to. (Reloaded OS, or sold the machine) How can I access those backups? I restored the BDBB, and the client computer that I used for the server (HP MSS EX475) shows as a connected client as well as lists all of the backups. Great!!! Where are the other computers?? I understand that I need to rejoin them to the server, but how do I make the ones that I can't rejoin show up grayed out like they used to be?
