ok , this is not a good sign. I use another WD20EARS drive. AND another TR5M, and this time I was restoring the BDBB back to the system and it crashed the TR5M again. I did 2 different backups from the server with the server backup tab the drives and no issues. I am lost now. I will try again later. any ideas. I did check out the cable and connects all looks good.

The variables that did not change are your server (hardware), the data stored on it, and BDBB. Since this is not an issue from other BDBB users, my inclination is to suspect a hardware issue (probably drive related) or corruption in the backup DB.

How I can fix or check for BDBB corruption. I have 2 sets of other backups on hardrives. can I manually place this back on the server. the restore only put about 21 gigs of data on and my MSS now states backup unknown and no dates in the drop down menus.

why would it tell me it can repair the backup and all is successful , but when I go to the backups none are there. I am not sure the backup abilities of WHS is very strong.

It's not clear to me what you did to get in this state, this looks like a different issue than the previous BDBB backup failures, correct? Did you try to restore a previous backup? If so, and it did not completely restore, then that could be the problem.

Try the WHS SMART Add-In if you've not yet done so to check your drives.

Yakuza. could I copy manually the BDBB I have back to my WHS. I think I found the folder where is should belong. does it span more than one location. I know you have that you can duplicate it in your program, Some how when I was removing an old backup to make space for the new backup my clients were erased. I didnt think much about it I just backed it up yesterday. and was going to just restore , but now that it kicks my TR5M off line. I was stuck. I am now moving to my previous Esata/USB dock and work from that end. but maybe a simple click and drag from the RDP window may be simple and fast. let me know.

PS , I wish they had a working Recycle bin you could just click and restore back to its location. :-k

I will start you from the top. I was just doing another routine DBDD backup at night and in the morning I noticed my red light was on and the TR5M was sitting idle with just 1 green light the first one on. on the screen . it was showing all those drives offline. ok no biggie I will just reboot. seems to come up ok and all looked well. so I did it again and with in a few minutes it would kick off the TR5M. I currently had 3 sets of backup. the one I was going to make, and old one 2 weeks ago. and a new one 3-4 days ago. 2 WD20ears and 1 WD black 1.5T. I swapped out the WDears and tried it with the other drive first with WHS backup all went well. then with WD black I tried the BDBB again. again it kicked off. but this time when I logged back in it was showing 2 listing under the DBDD tab one with 400gigs and another listing 0 space used. both with the same date. I thought the 0 space was the bad attempt so I went to delete it and the one that had 400gigs vanished. CRAP I thought, tried to delete the 0 space again and no luck. So I thought no biggie I will use one of the others to restore. I went back to the back tab for WHS then I noticed all my backups were listed as unknown and no backup dates. Double DooDoo again , not to worried I can just restore them as well. the repair tab listed then computers that were online but no luck when you check them. So here I sit not sure what to tell you either other than, I have lost no data :D , but I cant put the data back on the system. I guess I can just start the client backups again from scratch. only had 2-3 weeks on backups anyway. but worries me that my backups are worth anything if I cant get them back on the system. I understand the multiple variable and will work to exclude them. I dont know why when I deleted the BDBB on the backup drive it deleted my system clients. I know about the tab hidden down in your program but I was on the front page.. I will keep you posted as I move along. just dont like simple fixes like click and drap and copy/Move to fix things.

The Wiki and Readme file both have the links to the instructions for manually copying the backup database. BDBB is just an automation of this process.

Thanks, let me know how it goes. It'll be interesting to see if the manual copy works better.

Well. no issues restoring manually from the Startec dock with USB cable. , seems normal, and did continue to do regular backs over the weekend. tonight I try and run BDBB over to the USB device and then back to TR5M. wish me luck.

small update. It did restore manually without problem and I have been able to manual backup to both the TR5M and the usb dock. currently using synctoy to backup the data off to my backup drives. using the stop pdl and stop whsbackup commands first . no errors or drive loss issues. I did try the BDBB 1.02 version but it did the same thing after about 15min or 10% into the backup. I will cont to try some other options. any ideas Yakuza let me know but i have changed all the variables except main unit but seems to do everything else fine and will backup the system folders without issues.

Sorry, no other ideas, the code is simply doing a File.Copy() which is a very basic system command. I'm sorry to hear it's not working for you, but all I could possibly do would be to put in some retry logic which I am considering for a future release.

Well as you can guess, Now thing seem fine. I did remove all the drives from the pool and then attached each one back individually and run the BDBB, seem to work with out error. Now I have all 4 back online with the WD EARS as the backup drive. I will place it in the pool as well and use the server backup option you have since it has 60-70MB/s thru puts compared to the USB attached devices 25-30MB/s. I did notice WHS had some recent updates on 12/15/2010 not sure this had any role in the issues. May be just a gremlin I had. I will say Synctoy seems to work well but I noticed I had backup database errors and had to use the repair tool each time I did a backup with this program. Maybe it was changing some attributes on the files tag that WHS didnt like. It was always quickly fixed with the repair button but I was not happy it occurred each time. maybe other can chime in on a possible issues with synctoy or Robocopy. I am back on track with no errors at this time , with over 4 backup drives and 6-7 backups performed. Also will there be any issues if I change the name of the BDBB directory on my backup drives. I noticed if I change the name I am able to do multiple backups onto 1 drive. I am using 2T WD drives and just thought it is a waste not to have more than 1 backup on each hard drive. Maybe this can be an added feature in you next version or update to allow more than 1 copy to sit on the same Hard drive maybe named "BDBB-date" based , similar to what the WHS backup server does.

Each backup can have a unique name, you are given that option when you create a backup.
