Hello

What are you doing with your no-longer-used AddIns?
I go the "usual" way to remove them from my WHS. But recently, together with another issue, I had a look into my registry. And was a bit surprised about, what's going on there! Some AddIns, I have removed long time ago are still living in my registry. It's like on each of my computers, a deinstallation does not work in a lot of cases...

On my computers I use some of this "Registry Cleaners". But what's suggested for our servers?

I suspect most of us just stay out of the registry and ignore those (now unnecessary) entries! I probably have a bunch of entries like that and see no ill effects. (And remember, WHS servers are not supposed to be managed from the desktop; only via the console!)

Now, that said, it would be nice if the Add-Ins would remove themselves COMPLETELY! Maybe a note to the author of each one you find to have not removed registry entries would be appropriate? But, on the other hand, I am not so sure I WANT unnecessary manipulations of my registry! Just another source of errors to troubleshoot...

There have been 3 mails sent out yesterday...

I appreciate all of these more or less free software tools. But at the end I have the expectation to an uninstall routine to remove all "footprints" completely. May be nobody was looking for that before...

I know some of my add-ins can leave remnants behind, I believe this to mostly be a benign issue but obviously not a best practice. As I release new versions I'll be making efforts to clean up more completely. An unfortunate side effect of the way Windows Home Server forces a silent install/uninstall is that there's no opportunity to query the user to ask if they'd like their settings saved (in the event of a reinstall rather than just an uninstall).

I've also seen add-ins that are too aggressive with what they install or uninstall and end up removing critical WHS dll files, causing system failures, so be careful what you ask for. :D

WHS also keeps a track of all the Add-Ins you install; and this is something that Add-In authors have no control over. You'll find them in the KnownAdditions keys.
