Does the system actually shut down, or just seem to? What is the symptom you are observing, do the lights power off or does the Server Console go away? Definitely check the Application Event Viewer for error messages.

The system seems to shutdown. all lights are off. How do I get to the errorlog? What are the credentials to log in to the home server to see event viewer?

Also, one more question. when I check "Enable Duplication for BDBB Backups". Does that mean that the normal HomeServer backups I do are now duplicated across hard drives (I have 3 1.5gig drives in the box).

Thanks

If all the lights are off then it sure seems to sound like it's shut down. :) You access the server via Remote Desktop. You don't mention which Home Server you have, but most of the HP's come with an Event Viewer built-in to the HP Settings tab.

Enabling Duplication for BDBB backups only does anything if you are creating backups to the "Server Storage" location which puts into into your storage pool.

I've got the latest model I think (the E495).

I think I read that backing up to the server itself is not recommended? any issues I need to know about there?

I'll encourage you to read the Wiki article, and some of the forum posts for all the details. Basically the most value is in having a copy of your client backups in a separate location to protect in the event of fire/flood/theft/etc.
