I am still looking for a suitable way to centralize mail without resorting to Exchange Server but am leaning towards building a rack server purely to run Exchange on.

Not very happy in that the Server OS cannot be backed up to WHS but mail is very important to me.

This was highlighted last week when the PSU in my main workstation bit the dust and I could not obtain a new one off the shelf.

All of my mail was locked up on that workstation and, despite having 2 x laptops, a netbook and Media PC i was unable to access my mailbox.

Sure I could use webmail to keep abreast of current emails but I could not refer back to anything as all of my history was locked up on the PC as was my Documents etc.

After the PSU outage I need to rethink my whole network strategy as it showed how vulnerable I am to having my main PC go down with no redundancy.

Mind you the WHS PSU is most definitely a weak link in itself...

Kind regards,

The Server OS like Windows 2003 running on another machine can be setup as a client to WHS and backed up.

Thanks for the quick reply erail,

Didn't realise that...will it backup the Exchange mailboxes as well?

Don't suppose you know if there is any way I could treat the Server OS as a Client so I can use my existing Avast! Family Pack client license to cover that machine also is there?

When I last made enquiries of Avast they wanted me to buy an SBS License which under the Microsoft Product Licensing regime forces me to buy 5 Client licenses just for the one SBS and one Client...me...for an additional £150 per year!

Costs me less than £100 for three years for my WHS & 10x Client licenses...

They also said the WHS Console will not recognise or register the SBS.

All that coupled with the setting up & maintaining SBS/Exchange put me off when I looked at it last time which was why I was looking for an alternative.

Thanks & kind regards,

I didn't try Exchange but I don't see any reason that it won't backup everything on the server. I know I got an error on the install but the only thing that it had a problem with was putting the shared files folder on the server desktop and that was easily remedied. I used to back up all my servers on whs. Not sure avast pro would install on the server but never tried.
