I tried the toggle last Monday, then Wednesday; just forgot to mention that.

Looks like a deletion is coming up! (Will likely procrastinate a bit as I am still installing things on my W7 desktop!)

This is a long shot, but make sure you hit apply between toggling the checkbox, I don't commit the changes until you click OK or Apply in the Settings tab. Ideally you'd wait a couple hours between.

Actually I probably only used the OK... I'll try again with APPLY.

Apply and OK should be the same end result.

Well that did not do any good either. Looks like I will need to delete.

Procrastinating on that for now tho!

OK, I resolved it -- but not intentionally!

I removed the target disk for my BDBB backups, a disk also used for manually backing up the MSS with the built-in WHS functionality for Shared Folders. A little over two hours later, as the new disk was being formatted, I noticed that the duplicate copy of the client backups had been removed! (I did NOT touch any of the disks in the storage pool or any other non-managed disks when I did this.)

That was a bit less radical than removing the backups and restoring them! You might suggest this to others as something to try in the future. (Beats me WHY it worked, but it did and I am a happy camper!)

Interesting, maybe it triggered DE to un-migrate the data off. :-k

Thanks, i will try that though I did update the server after doing the reinstall, maybe there were a few updates left.

I was ultimately unable to resolve the problem, i was going from backup database errors to backup service not running so I wiped everything and started afresh.

Dear Alex,

I posted a request a while ago and am still looking for an adequate solution. (In the meantime I rely on BDBB but manual)

I need to have an automated solution to the backup of the database. As this is for a business it can run over the weekend.

It would be great if this is a feature that could be switched on or off.(in order to cover both home and small businesses)

By perhaps creating a backup profile, we could set duplication, location (USB or server), backuptime and overwrite last backup?

This would be fantastic and address issues for many small business users.

Do you think the above is feasable and would you be interested. I am sure many users would be willing to make a donation to keep you going! (I certainly would).

thanks for all your hard work,

Jaap

Second that. I still can't get over all the quality free Addins for WHS. Where's the PayPal button for BDBB?

Hi Jaap,

Thanks again for your comments, I believe I responded to them all in your original request. What you ask is possible, and I'm interested in developing something that would include these features (or similar), but unfortunately I do not currently have a plan to implement them. There are simply other projects on my plate that are prioritized higher at the moment.

I do appreciate your feedback.

MRL_WHS, thank you also for the comments, I'm glad you find value in the Add-Ins. :whs: A PayPal button is something I have considered but not decided to make available at this time.

Have you checked out the thread concerning Automated Server Backups at http://www.mediasmartserver.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3261? That approach can be configured to do much of what you are asking for. Not an Add-In but not particularly difficule to implement.

Alex,

thanks, did not mean to be pushy. Just overly keen ;)
fingers crossed you will find the time at a later stage..
best, Jaap :TR4M:

Post subject:  Re: WHS Backup Database-Backup (BDBB) Add-In version 1.0.2.2

Thanks for the great addon. I have a question so that I can size how big my "backup of backups" disk needs to be - how does BDBB store multiple backups on a disk?

Does it store just the changed (backup database) files, using hard links (as with the WHS shared folder backup approach, a sort of single-instance approach) to link the existing files into the directory or does it simply copy all of the files again? I appreciate that this will also depend on how WHS stores the data, and whether a file, once written, effectively changes so much over the days as to make any form of single instance not worth the effort.

If it does not do any form of single-instance approach to save space when multiple backups are stored, and if this might be useful to more effectively manage the space required for backups, is something you might consider adding into the add-in as it develops?

The backups are each individually contained in a folder that you specify. There is no incremental approach because every 4GB backup file changes at least every Sunday when Backup Cleanup runs.
