I've noticed the search 4.0 slowing down everything even file transfers to the WHS. However I do find it useful when I need to search for something as it seems to link its index with those of connected computers and I can search for files on the server using a connected Win 7 client very fast.

Now if MS used some basic common sense so as to automatically snooze indexing when file transfers or other more critical operations are taking place the world would be a better place. But I'm beginning to feel sometimes that basic common sense is too much to ask for from certain firms.

Is it possible to do a partial backup database backup? I have two machines backed up to my server - my current desktop, and the desktop from before I reformatted that I keep around in case I didn't grab something out before reformatting.

While I want to keep an offsite BDDB of my current machine, I don't see a real need to do it for the pre-reformat one, though...

There's no incremental backup for BDBB, it's a full snapshot.

Hello all, I'm new to the whole home server topic and explored the server on wiki and came here as the add ons place.

jmpage2, you're experiencing the slowness issue. I have the similar issue with Western Digital 1.5TB Green drive, at least one. I use it as a simple external usb backup drive and when I connect to my desktop pc the entire PC freezes, and can barely navigate in a simple XP environment (not even in WHS). I have to turn off the WD drive and everything is back fine (swaping other drives don't cause the same symptoms). I've read a number of posts that there is something with the Green technology, not being designed for the server environment, also something with the head parcking issue. I know a good program that scans the HD surface- Spinrite.

By the way, do you guys know if WHS can run in a DOS environment? Spinrite has a buildin DOS distro and can run on regular windows machines. Will Spinrite run on WHS machines?
Otherwise, I'll have to remove the drive from WHS and Spinrite it on a different machine.

That behavior sounds to me like a drive with hardware issues, the green drives are not that slow that they should cause the issues you describe.

Alex, thank you for the reply. Any way to compress the back-ups?

To be honest I've not tried that yet. I'll keep it in mind for a possible future update.

Hi all

My first post here in what appears to be an interesting forum.

I've been using WHS for a while, and recently upgraded my box from an old desktop to a dedicated server.
I'd ideally like to copy the PC back ups on my old server to my new server. I was pointed to this software from the MS WHS forum.
Is this something I can do with the BDBB add-in? Or can I only do a complete restore?

Thanks

Yup, I describe how to do that in this blog article about manually migrating to a new Home Server.

Thanks for that. Just to let you know the link from the wiki to that post is broken, hence my post here. :-)

Which link? The only broken link I see in the Wiki is to the technocore.homeserver.com page which appears to have gone offline.

Yes, that one, which I assumed was what you linked to above. If not, then just ignore me! :-)

I have installed BDBB for the first time (latest version). Connected a hard drive via USB, verified it in the console, but did not add it to the pool. I initiated a backup to the drive, and it ran for a while. However, when I checked in later on it's progress the console window had closed. WHen I reconnected, the Backup service was still not running, but neither was BDBB. The backup existed, and was around 70GB. I knew this was incorrect, as I have about six computers backed up. I deleted the backup, restarted WHS (in order to get backup service running again), and initiated another backup. Same results, except that the incomplete backup was only 67GB.

Any suggestions on what might be going wrong? I have a DIY WHS build, based on an ASUS P5Q-E mobo with about ten drives. TIA.

Check the Application Event Viewer and HomeServerConsole.log on the server. The logs are located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\logs
