PerfectDisk 10 is now out and I received a mail from Raxco inviting me to purchase PD10 with a 20% discount until 31st Jan using discount code "THEPERFECT10".

When I bought PD2008, I purchased their "2 year upgrade protection" for a couple of extra dollars, but seems that I should have received a mail with my new keys. So, if you have PD2008, check if you purchased the maintenance, and if you did, and like me didn't get any new keys send a mail to customerservice@perfectdisk.com. They turn around mails really quick, and sent me my keys in under 30 minutes (which has been my experience with them each time I've had a query)

I've got a heavily fragmented system ready to test the new release on, and I'm just waiting for some benchmarking software to arrive and I'll post some before and after stats in the near future.

Thanks Cougar, I look forward to reading up your test results (and see if they match off with the review done on We Got Served)

When I went to look at the protection plan there isnt a 2 yr option anymore. I looks like 1 year with a 50% upgrade path after that.

I got the two year option when I renewed. Cost me £6.30

I bought PerfectDisk 2008 a few weeks ago (with the maintenance, thankfully) and have been very happy with it so far. I, too, had a heavily fragmented system and it does a great job of cleaning things up, resulting in a noticeable speed improvement.

I, too, got my PD10 version via the maintenance updates. Does anyone know whether the maintenance is renewable? The cost for the maintenance was extremely reasonable, much cheaper than an upgrade. So I would definitely consider renewing for another year.

As there is currently an even better Deal for PD10, I was wondering if it fits a current need of mine. And as I cannot find it on the features-list but am still wondering if it really cannot do that, I am going to give the Pros a shot.

As my two Storage-Pool Disks are totally messed up regarding usage (one at 11%, the other one at 76%), my reason to buy would be wether or not PD10 is capable of moving some data from one disk to another?

I know there is some command-line tool for this stuff, but I would really much rather have an AddIn to do that (on a regular basis).

No, PD10 will NOT do that.

But do you REALLY care? Why not just let the Drive Extender do it's job?

Actually I do not know whether or not the Extender will take care of that (if it does, great!). Most of the bigger files I have are not being mirrored to both disks but are residing on only one of them due to my settings on the shares. I just figured that due to my setup those files will not be managed by the extender - do they?

If you have set the files up to be duplicated and if there is room to duplicate them them then DE will duplicate them. (If it cannot you should get an error message.) All of the files in the Shared Folders are managed by the Drive Extender, whether duplicated or not, as long as you have two or more disk drives.

If you want to check what is where to verify the duplication install the Duplication Information Add-In.

If you have three disks and want to clean the data off the system disk then there is a tool for that (not an Add-In). And if you really want to balance the data across drives there is a non-Add-In tool to do that, too. (I ass-u-me you are familiar with these two tools as you mention them earlier in the thread.)

Good to know. Guess I will stay patient (*giggles*) and see what happens as my drives are getting more populated. :beerme:

Thanks for poiting that out!

Seems like when new data arrives the Extender shuffles it from Disk1 to Disk0. When I put data on a share Disk1 grows (like 76% mentioned earlier) while Disk0 stays put at 11%. Checking next morning reveals that Disk0 is back at 74%. So thanks a lot again for pointing that out!

And now... back to topic. ;)

Anther use for PerfectDisk...

I had occasion to play around a bit this evening with PerfectDisk 10. Under the Space Management tab there is a function entitled "Duplicates Finder". I ran it against my client D-Drive, where I have all my music and pictures (except known non-duplicates in some shared folders). It worked WONDERFULLY! Very easy to see the duplicates, sort them by name or size, etc. right from the results screen. Very thorough and very accurate. And it recognizes re-names as being the same file! (It does NOT consider a "cropped" image to be the same as the original though!) After removing a few hundred duplicates of photos and music tracks I gave up for the night -- but I will return!

If all your files are already exclusively on the MSS/WHS you can NOT run this in the WHS version. That function is NOT present. But if you have the originals on a client you can synchronize to the Shared Folders and accomplish the same thing.

I would, however, be very careful at any time you may be dealing with your only copies of any files. (I have my clients backed up to the MSS, the MSS backed up manually (shared folders and BDBB Add-In), and I have multiple automated backups (including copies off-site) so I did not hesitate to experiment.
