The thread was initially created almost exactly a year ago...

NOw comes this thread to praise The Lord... I mean Avast, and no word about the past crisis. So I'm questionning the purpose of this thread, is it because the reported problem was no big deal and a new user is glad to have found this piece of software and want to share; or is it to minimize the bad publicity? :-k

I never had an issue with the so called "big problem". I'm still a happy Avast customer and recommend to my clients.

Actually if you look at the date when this thread was started you will see that it is exactly a year old!

It is only the penultimate post that is current...

Yes Avast did have a big problem with a corrupt definition flagging anything coded in Delphi it would appear as a false positive.

For many users they may not have noticed - if they were not using their PC when the definition was updated a corrected version was released some hours later which should have resolved any issue.

Other users (like myself) were alarmed to find broadcast messages all over their monitors advising that legitimate programs were infected.

Some poor, unfortunate souls either moved the 'infected' files to the chest or worse still deleted them altogether...you can imagine the problem this may have caused!

The Avast User Forum was hammered so much that it was unavailable for a period of time and there was nothing on their home page advising of the issue - inexcusable IMHO.

I have used Avast here on my WHS & Clients and will continue to use it but that does not mean everything is rosy.

For instance Alwil seem to offer no support whatsoever for the WHS version and have not updated it all year.

Still the best solution in both performance/price for me though and I would still recommend it above other solutions such as Norton.

Kind regards,
-=Glyn=-

PS. 3 replies in the time it took me to write one - I really must work on my typing speed!

Just a warning for those of you who are thinking of using Avast on your WHS...

Despite my advocacy for the product - I still think it is a great product - it is just very badly let down due to total lack of support by Alwil.

I have no axe to grind but for those of you who who might be thinking of going down the Avast road for WHS or Professional Family Pack I would just warn you that all is not rosy...

Be patient?

Over a year waiting to see a reply from Avast in their own WHS Support Forum?

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=41082.0

Three months after posting in their main support forum for lack of support for their Professional Family Pack;

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=49590.0

First email sent a year ago but never replied to?

Another email sent 3 months ago but again not replied to?

If it were just me I might think I had upset someone but there many WHS users who have had the same experience...how patient does one have to be I wonder?

Looks like Avast has pulled the WHS Family Pack. And the new 5.0 version of Pro currently doesn't talk to the 4.8 version of WHS. Although they do plan on fixing that and also releasing a 5.0 version of Avast for WHS at some point. (In other words, you might want to wait a bit to update any of your clients to 5.0.) This post over at WeGotServed details it:

http://www.wegotserved.com/2010/02/07/a ... continued/

And if you look on the Avast site now you'll see no links for the WHS version at all, so it looks like they really don't want to fool with the Avast for WHS anymore. If you still want it you can still get to the order page for it though by using the direct URL - http://www.avast.com/windows-home-server

People are fussing about it on the Avast forum. They don't seem to be responding though. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53781.0

It upsets me because I really like Avast and I really liked the WHS Family Pack edition. It was a good price and a good add-in. If they feel like they weren't charging enough, then OK, I'd be willing to pay more. Charge me the 10 Pro license amount ($149) and add a little extra for the WHS version. That would be OK. It would still be much cheaper than most multi-license server packages. My current licenses are good for two more years, but I'm not sure what I'll do after that. Maybe I'll drop back to Avast Free clients and find some other software for the WHS. I don't guess Avast will be making much money then huh?

I just re-upped for another 2 years on the WHS AVAST Family pack, so it may not be on the website but they are still selling it. I find it cheap and it works well. I still get daily updates on the virus definitions and the program itself was updated 2 weeks ago. It is 4.8 but who cares as long as it works.

Avast has just released a new client program (5.0.462) that allows Avast Control Center on WHS to see the clients again.
Just update your PCs Avast program.
