I don't need some type of mail service on my server....do I? |

No, you don't need a mail service on your server. You could try to find the smtp info for your ISP, if you tell us who that is we can likely find the mail server settings for you. |

smwoodward, why don't you try your scenario where you got lots of messages telling you anti-virus is disabled, and watch what happens in Remote Notification? I think you'll see the answer to your questions about the WHS event behavior. I don't know exactly what behavior you experienced. My experience with WHS notifying me of antivirus is that it only re-issues the event when either the client or server are restarted. You said you were installing lots of apps after reloading the OS -- I'm guessing you were rebooting the client periodically after installing drivers or apps, which would cause WHS to issue a new notification, hence you'd get the new mail. In this case, it's not the same notification refreshing, it's a new notification for the same problem being issued and then closed. |

As I stated earlier, I believe I have all the settings in correctly just as you stated in your previous posting. |

Ok, I wasn't sure if you had AOL as an ISP or AOL strictly for mail. Sorry, I don't use AOL and have no way to troubleshoot... hopefully someone else can chime in! |

I'm sorry, correction....AOL is not my ISP, Verizon DSL is my ISP. I use AOL strictly for email only. |

Verizon DSL is just my ISP. I guess I'll just wait on getting this to work. I'm moving in a few weeks and my ISP is going to change to Verizon FIOS. Maybe I'll have better luck then. |

To the best of my knowledge, all ISPs provide you with a default user account that includes an email address. You don't have to regularly use the email address to utilize your ISP's SMTP server... |

As stated, I'll just wait until I switch to FIOS in a few weeks. However, I don't see why I need to use Verizon's SMTP server. I have Windows Live Messaging setup to recieve and send emails via AOL's SMTP server with no problem.

Then you should be able to use those same settings in Remote Notification. If that's not working, there should be an exception popping up, share that screenshot of the error and I'll see what's up. |

Do you not get an error dialog pop up when you attempt to send a sample notification? If so, then press "Printscreen" on your keyboard, paste that into Paint, save as jpg, and upload here via the attachment mechanism. |

I'm no SMTP expert, but that looks like you probably have everything configured correctly, but the AOL SMTP server is rejecting you for some reason. I did read some posts that their SMTP server sometimes rejects sending mails. I'd suggest trying to find your Verizon SMTP server login and email account; you don't have to actually use that account, just send the emails via it. Sorry I can't help more... |
