Hi Alex,
Do you know if your add-in works with the EX485 MSS? As I mentioned in another thread, I dont have any other choice but putting the server in my office (very close to me actually). I generally work during the night in there and my office has been extremely quiet until yesterday. I would love to decrease the speed/noise of the fans (without stressing the system of course).
Thanks in advance!
Ed

Fan Control won't work, the EX48x uses a different mechanism for fan control. I don't know how to control them yet, but obviously would like to so will be investigating.

I have figured out how to consistently reproduce the problem I have with Fan Control resetting itself to 0 rpm under the "Advanced Controls" option.

1. Under Fan Control addin, check "Enable Advanced Controls". Set Fan Speed Adjustment to 200 rpm. Set Threshold Temp Adjustments to -30 for both upper and lower.

2. Check Hardware Status tab to make sure fan speeds are consistent.

3. Restart the MSS.
4. Go to Settings>Hardware Status. Fan speeds should be consistent with previous check at 2.
5.Go to Settings>Fan Control. Fan speed settings should be unchanged from 1.
6. Press OK to exit Settings.
7. There is a long pause and the MSS health light is now blinking blue.
8. When the OK button reactivates either press OK to exit or press Hardware Status. If I press Hardware Status I can see that the fan speeds are now running at YMBOC registry edit settings. If I press OK to exit, the Settings box closes.
9. If I press OK to exit the Settings box, reopen Settings and press Hardware Status and notice that the fan speeds are now running at YMBOC registry edit settings.

10. Go to Settings>Fan Control and see that the Fan Speed Adjustment is now at 0 rpm., but Threshold Temp Adjustments are still at -30 deg C each.

Fan control resets itself each and every time I do the above sequence.

Got it, you're right this does repro the issue, thanks! We've been chasing this one awhile. I'll put this in my queue to look at the cause and fix in the near future.

It took me awhile to realize that I was doing the exact same particular sequence of screen checks each time I restarted my server. As soon as I realized that, I wrote the sequence down and tried it a few times, each time verifing the issue.

Every time I hit 'Apply,' my machine freezes. I then have to do a hard reboot to get the system running again. How do I resolve this?

usually it will freeze for only a minute or two and then start working again.

Are you waiting long enough before you restart your server?

Also it's not a good idea to hard reboot your server ( Shoot it in the head as some people say )

Pushing the power button for 1 second and then releasing will start a regular shutdown that will take a few minutes to complete.

I definitely waited for longer than 2 minutes. So does this mean I have a problem? Or should I wait longer?

And thanks for the shutdown tip, I did not know about the graceful shutdown. Will be doing that from now on. What are the consequences of 'shooting your server in the head?'

I forgot to note that every time I hit the "Apply" button, the health light on my MSS blinks blue. What does this mean?

The registry is being modified to apply the fan control settings.

That, and the services are being restarted to pick up the changes. From the README in the first page of this topic:
Quote:
CONFIGURATION
=============
To use MSS Fan Control, simply move the sliders or select the button
appropriate to accomplishing your desired fan behavior, and then click
"Apply". The WHS Console will freeze for a few seconds, and the MSS
LED indicators will blink. You should observe the changes in fan speed
within a few seconds.

Big Al / yakuza....

I hope you are able to find the time to give us an ex48x version of this must-have AddIn... My EX485 runs HOT (usually in the 55-65 degree range) with those fans running at the slow stock revolutions; want to apply your magic recommended/advanced settings so that it drops as much as possible. Both of my EX475 are so much cooler, no doubt thanks to your AddIn...
