AGESTES: Have you tried this?

John I did try the registry resets from the post above before going back to HP Support. It didn't work for my problem. The best I can figure it is a hardware issue.I'll know for sure once the new chassis arrives and I put my hard drives in and fire it up. I will post the results here after the new chassis arrives.

36 hours ago my fan speed change from 1600 rpm stable to 2500 rpm stable. I took the server apart and checked if there were any dust inside, nothing, put it back together put it still spins at 2500 rpm stable. What could be the problem?
I've downloaded the software Fan Speed Control and applied the settings, nothing happened, rebooted, settings just as I left them but no change at the rpm. It has been working for like 2 months and it's really bad spinning at that level, its sucks a beauty in my living room so I don’t want it to put it inside the closet. Here's some additional info that might come handy:

Software version: 1.3.6.21622
BOIS version: R02
SN: CN68160H8V
Upper fan: 2556
Lower fan: 2556
System: 25 C
CPE: 26 C
VCCP: 1.28
AUX: 5.08
1.8 V: 1.808
3.3 V: 3.334
5.0 V: 4.919
12 V:11.904

Have also contacted HP like 5 times but they never have an answer to me :(

I have to ask what else changed those 36 hours ago when the full-speed fans started? Did you have Fan Control installed at the time, or did you install it later to try and fix things? From your explanation it doesn't sound like a Fan Control problem but a more general issue with your server. If you had taken it apart, perhaps you didn't re-connect the fans correctly.

Just to confirm, you are referring to the MSS Fan Control Add-In, not SpeedFan, right?

I received a new chassis from HP Support this morning and promptly slid my hard drives in and fired it up. Everything worked fine. The only difference I noticed was the temperatures were much lower. Before the fan problem my cpu ran 33 to 38 and the system temp was 32 to 35. The temperatures now run a constant 27 cpu and 27 system. I watched it for an hour and there was no change. I shut it down broke open the case replaced the ram with a 2 gig stick (Crucial) and finally decided to upgrade the cpu with a AMD Athlon 1640 that I bought from Newegg and had sitting on the shelf. I fired it up and have been watching the temps for three hours and the temp on the cpu is a constant 27 and the system is 30. The fan speed has been in the 1425 to 1455 range.

I am wondering if HP has made any changes to the hardware that would explain the difference in temperatures or if my unit had always been defective and finally failed. One thing for sure the problem had nothing to do with the MSS Fan Control add on.

Thanks again for the help I received from the forums.

The RPM readout for my fans on my HP MediaSmart, even when I put it back into "Factory Defaults" mode, seems to be stuck on two numbers. The top one switches between 1480 rpm and 1493, and the bottom one switches between 1442 and 1454. They never display any rpm other than those. Before I installed the add-in, I know that it was displaying other rpms. Not really too bad of an issue, as long as my server is being cooled enough. However, I would like to know the real rpms of my fans.

Are you hitting "Apply" or "OK" after making changes to the sliders? Set the constant fan speed to 100%, hit "Ok", then check the speeds in Hardware Status.

The Hardware Status page is the true fan speed reading. Fan Control only changes registry entries that control how the fans speed up or down, not how they report their speeds.

Finally, those speeds look normal for "Factory Defaults" levels.

The question really should be "what are the temperatures?" rather than "what are the fan speeds?". If you are in a Northern climate it is cooler than it was a couple months ago and there may not be any reason for the fan speeds to be higher. If the temperatures are OK then the fan speeds are appropriate for the current conditions (ambient and server load). If you want to see if the control is working, PARTIALLY block the air intake while watching the fan speeds and temperatures or run a virus scan to increase the processor load. If you want to graph the performance over a (short) period of time install SpeedFan and use the "chart" tab to graph fans and temps. (Be careful reading those as the time scales for the two are different -- and the Task Manager graphs are different from either of those!)

Just wanted to say thanks for the great add-in! I upgraded my memory and cpu following the home server hacks guide and after a couple of days of running fine my server started shutting down from overheating. The temp would run ~50 C at idle (ordered the arctic silver thermal grease, we'll see if that helps as well) and then it would shut down during backups. I installed your add-in and took the advanced route with -22C and +175 RPM and my server is running at ~36 C. Much better!

Thanks!

Great add-in. Works very effectively. Thanks!!!!

It sure would be neat if there was a way to see a log of the temperatures for the MSS CPU. I put my MSS into a cabinet that has good ventilation but not as much as if it was out in the open on a desk. The CPU temp went up from about 28 C (on average) to 34 C (on average), which was not bad, but then added the MSS Fan Control. It has managed to get the temp down to 32 C (on average) and only increased the RPM by about 100 for each fan. Great add-in.

You camn monitor this with SpeedFan. There is a thread around here ( viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1236 ) discussing that utility that contains the details as to which temperature sensor is which. You can install it via Remote Desktop and then set it up to be run from Advanced Admin Add-In, for example. Can plot 5 (or 6) temperature sensors or fan speeds. DO NOT use it to control the MSS fans; use it only to chart.
