I downloaded and installed the latest Disk Management addin version: 1.0.9.8 tonight which requires a couple of restarts of the console (one after uninstalling the old addin version and one after installing the new version). After installing the addin and restarting the console I noticed that MSS Fan Control had reset the Fan Speed Adjustment back to 0 rpm again. There seems to be some sort of problem with the stability of the Fan Speed Adjustment after installing addins.

Well, I have been able to repeat this -- TWICE.

Post the steps on how to repro if you've got it! If it's just uninstall/installing DiskManagement then I can try to repro that.

Again, I don't know of any other process that interacts with the registry settings used by Fan Control, so have no clue how they could be reverting.

(Make that THREE times now...)
    1. Check settings:
      - Constant speeds at 50%
      - Enabled Advanced Control (box checked)
      - Speed Adjustment at +175 (also checked at +200 & +150)
      - Upper: -22C
      - Lower: -22C
    3. Uninstall (closed console)
    4. Open Console
    5. Check settings -- unchanged
    6. Install (closed console)
    7. Open Console
    8. Check settings -- Fan Speed Adjustment now at zero (0), otherwise unchanged

Fan settings stayed the same for me after installing new disk managment ADD-ON. No change.

I am NOT running the advanced controls. I am running optimized.

John, when you say "Uninstall" in step 3 and "Install" in step 6, you mean uninstall DiskManagement?

I'll take a look at the fan speed adjustment code tonight...

YES, specifically version 1.0.9.8. (Initially it was replacing, I believe, version 1.0.9.5.)

I can't repro this, guys. Are you sure you aren't changing any settings? If you change settings, even though you don't click "Apply" or "Ok" on the Fan Control tab, if you click it on any other tab it will apply those changes....

I had 1.0.9.5 and upgraded to 1.0.9.8 following the steps documented, and did not see any change in Fan Control.

I can absolutely guarantee that I didn't change any settings when I upgraded from 1.0.9.5 to 1.0.9.8.

I just looked back through this thread and noticed that the first time I discovered this fan speed resetting problem was on July 24, 2008. I just checked my download folder for when I downloaded and installed Disk Management 1.0.9.5 and it was on July 22, 2008. Makes me wonder if this problem first started for me with 1.0.9.5.

I also started with 1.0.9.5.

Is this really a "problem" or an isolated incident?

My first experience was upgrading from 1.0.9.5 to 1.0.9.8. Subsequent experiences were from 1.0.9.8 to 1.0.9.8.

All I can say is that at least three people have experienced this problem and I, for one at least, have been able to repeat it.

YAKUZA: Check out this thread on MediaSmartHome, searching on the page for "Fan Control" circa 8/13+:
http://www.mediasmarthome.com/forum/thr ... ow-was-it/
It seems MSS FanControl is being associated with some other problems...

Thanks for the heads up. I saw one person report an issue after PP1 install, that was subsequently resolved by reinstalling all his add-ins. I'll try the reinstall of 1.0.9.8 and see if I can repro..

I ran a back-up of the back-up database using WHS BDBB this afternoon. I just checked and noticed that my fan speed adjustment had again re-set itself to 0 rpm. All I did was run a back-up to an external usb drive.

Fan Control has again reset itself twice in the last 5 days. The first time was after I got power back on Friday afternoon. My MSS had been off for seven days due to no power after Hurricane Ike. After I got power back on, I restarted my MSS and noticed that all of the fan control settings had reverted to default settings. Then again today after last night's Windows update, I came home from work to find that the fan speed adjustment had reverted back to 0 rpm.

I'm sorry to hear that. I have not left my server off for many days, but these are registry settings and should not change with an extended outage. Did you observe any messages in the Event Viewer about those settings changing?

Without a solid repro I'm at a total loss as to what is causing this behavior that seems to mainly be seen only by you and JohnBick. :(
