Post subject:  Intermittent SLOW BDBB file copies

Hi all,

I'm using BDBB to backup a WHS SP2 BD of ~600 gigs to a USB3 drive with plenty of free space.

I see typical copy times for the ~4 gig files of 1-2 minutes (using explorer to watch for new files on the destination dir). However, it sometimes takes 30-60 minutes to copy a file. I think these slow copies are somewhat random but affect maybe 10-20% of the file copies. When I see a slow file copy, I see my processor usage stay above 50% (dual core) leading me to think something is loading my server and slowing the copy. However, task viewer shows ~98-99% system idle, so I can't identify the culprit. Event viewer doesn't show any BDBB errors or warnings.

Has anyone seen similar issues or have any ideas for what might be going on and how to fix it?

Thanks!

I've not heard of such an issue. I'd suggest trying to determine if there's any kind of timing frequency (does it occur every hour?), and also install the Home Server SMART Add-In to check drive health.

I think I figured it out. My data is stored on a single pool of two SATA drives and two older IDE drives. The IDE drives were recently added during a recent storage crunch, but it now looks like one or both of the IDE drives is running in PIO mode, which explains the slow copy and the high CPU load. I'm going to the get a new SATA drive, migrate the data off the IDE drives, and try another BDBB backup. Hopefully, that will get my backups into the 5-6 hour range instead of the 25-30 hour range.
