I downloaded and installed wordpress over the weekend, today I was attempting to change themes, (when trying to activate it) and got a white screen (blank screen). No biggie I thought I'll just uninstall wordpress and start over. BUT I can't uninstall, and I don't know enough to fix wordpress!

Saying you can't uninstall isn't helpful, do you get an error message? What is in the Additions.log file on the server in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\logs? Have you rebooted the server?

I've figured out how to delete 'wordpress' in PMA and start over, I think....

But if I try to install the theme Weaver 1.7 I get this....

Installing Theme: Weaver 1.7
Downloading install package from http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/down ... er.1.7.zip

Unpacking the package…

Installing the theme…

Successfully installed the theme Weaver 1.7.

Which suggest that I have installed the theme correctly, right?

But if I preview it, I get this...

Image

If I activate it I need to reinstall wordpress to recover

So is this something I'm doing wrong?
An issue with wordpress on WHS?
Or an issue with the theme????

It seems like wordpress would not publish a bad/untested theme? And it has been downloaded 5900 times...
With a 5 star rating....

1.7 fails for me, 1.54 (the Weaver 2010 theme) works fine though

I think its a Weaver theme issue, if I install 1.54 its fine, if i then install 1.7 its fine but installing 1.7 on its own causes the same issue you are seeing.

Thanks for your help!

Figures I can pick the one that fails...

So, once it fails is it normal for wordpress to be inaccessible? Because I just loaded wordpress over the weekend, my answer was to reinstall. But if I had had a real site that would not be so acceptable. Any guidance on what I should be doing, and how to recover, when the site fails as it did here?

Or is this so rare that it is a none issue?

Again thanks

Whilst its rare, the best advice you can ever get when modifying something is "backup first". I personally take a copy of the whole blog folder, and then i can revert back as needed.

Just so I'm clear, you are talking just about "C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\blog"? There is no need to wory about the files in D:\MySQL Databases?

And it is as simple as replacing "C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\blog", with the backup copy?

Thanks

That should be fine. The config is held in these areas, the database holds the content.

I thought this was an excellent chance to learn. So I made a copy of blog, activated weaver and the site crashed again as expected. I then replaced "blog" with the copy I made. The site is still down

Nope. Just tried that again. As well as all previous locations.

Nothing from http://yourserver/blog/

onward is reachable as far as I can tell.

I get:

The website cannot display the page
HTTP 500
Most likely causes:
•The website is under maintenance.
•The website has a programming error.

When I go to http://yourserver/blog/wp-admin/index.php?login and login the dashboard says the current theme is bad and reverts to the default

Interesting... I went to http://yourserver/pma login and clicked on Privileges checked wordpress checked "Drop the databases that have the same name" clicked on go.

Goto Windows Home Server Console | Settings | Add-ins | click on Wordpress Installer for WHS Uninstall.

Then repeat and install Wordpress Installer for WHS

This resets wordpress

Then I create wordpress again, as per the instructions.

wordpress
Local
Password
Password

Check "Create database with same name and grant all privileges"
Go

http://<server_name>/blog

Click "Create a Configuration File

Click on Let's go

Database Name wordpress
User Name. wordpress

Password. <password>

Database Host. localhost

Table Prefix. wp_

Click Submit

Click Run the install

..::My Blog::..

<my email>

Click Install Wordpress

Copy (password)

Click login

admin
(password)

Click log in

And I'm back..
Change my (password) to something I can remember

Click on update profile

Click on "Please update now"

Click on "Upgrade Automatically"

At this point if I go to themes and download weaver I can start the process over.

It is very repeatable for me.

If ones does not uninstall wordpress from the WHS one does not get a "clean" install....

Thanks again for your time and effort & thoughts
Daveed

Installing the 1.5.4 version does indeed appear to fix the issue, with the theme.
