i hope you have success with this, but i have my doubts. large companies don't give away intellectual property, they license it. i am surprised HP didn't sell or license MSS to some other company. my hope is another company maybe like Buffalo that has the capacity and infrastructure necessary but markets servers of lesser quality might look at this as an opportunity to get licensing and run with it.

For starters I'd like to see the Sleep functionality fixed once and for all. After spending some time with it back last Fall, I can point to the exact error in the code (or at least the result of the error) to make that a relatively easy fix.

I'd like the specifics on this, please.

What feature in the Webshare do you miss in the new PhotoViewer?

Alex,

Sleep Functionality....

I spent a good deal of time studying this last Fall and even talked to HP on a couple of occasions. I believe the error is tied to how the software writes the PowerController entries. The Event Viewer log entries are the key. The following is an e-mail I sent to shaune.germain@hp.com at HP back on December 5th of last year. I never received a reply.

As we discussed, the initial set-up of a sleep time seems to work. It puts two or three entries in the Application Event Log that are PowerController entries. One sets the Daily Wake Time (i.e. Daily wake occurs daily at xx:xx:00 AM/PM) You may also see another related to Backup Wake Time (Backup wake occurs daily at xx:xx:00 AM/PM. This is typically 2 minutes BEFORE whatever it is you entered as the front end of the backup window time in the Console (ex. If you entered 6:00 a.m.-9:00 a.m. for backups in the console, the event in the log would be 5:58 a.m.) The last PowerController entry sets the Sleep Date/Time. Note I said date/time - unlike the wakeup and backup times, this one is in specific date/time format. Look at the most recent entries in the Application Event Log and you'll see an example.

Now when the Sleep Time arrives you'll see another PowerController entry indicating the MSS is going to sleep. And either at the wake time or if necessary 2 minutes before the scheduled backup time, the MSS will wake up and the first entry in the Application Log will be a MediaSmartService entry stating "PowerEvent handle successfully by the service."

After studying the log entries I wonder if the bug is tied to the Date/Time format of Sleep entry versus the 'daily' Time format of the wake times. In other words, the server gets a sleep time tied to a specific date. When seen by the software, it is a one time event, not a daily event.

As for the Photo Web Viewer....

The EX47x Photo Viewer has the ability to set permissions at the album level that restricted visitor access via passwords as well as set permissions for things like printing, downloading and uploading by visitors. My family really liked the feature that alerted them via e-mail when new photos were posted. These features were removed I believe starting with the EX48x series.

It would also be nice to Set the backup time for each client. I hate that I set it to wake and backup at a certain time but It will not always start a backup on any of the clients for hours. Also on the backup screen , it would be nice if the last backup date time was listed rather than having to select and open each backup to see when it was completed. I was talking to someone over at another site and he thought he could easily patch that issue. I believe he works for HP. but now that post is dead quite. here is the link, some of you may know him. Just a few more ideas.

I contacted HP and they flat out said no to releasing the source to the 3.0 software. :(

Bummer! I guess we sort of expected that, but at least we tried. Looks like we'll be dependent upon our excellent add-in creators for any future enhancements.

Thats too bad. Im not suprised but still disappointed. so what would be like seen created as an add-in?

I would like to see an add-in for email (preferrably Smarter mail since it supports 10 users)

I would like to see someone else develop a WHS Mobile app. I like the original but seems that progress has been abandoned. if I had twitter Id ask why but I dont.

A full FTP Client that didnt break other functionality would be nice.

That would be my short list.

Im wondering if we could get a copy of the files from HP incase there is need for a reset. I assume that sooner or later HP will just stop carrying the files for a produce they dont sell anylonger.

To bed we couldnt get the source. Im also sad that iStream isnt going to be updated again. I would have liked to see update of IOS4 (multitask and Retina display) I would also have liked to get Streaming over 3g re-enabled. I think blame on the whole fiasco lies clearly on MS shoulders. I think the year-ish long data curruption bug really hurt a fledgling product. I also think HP pulled out a little to soon. You cant blame them for seeing the writing on the walls though. Im sure the pulling of DE didnt help. Its sad when good products get cancelled way befor they can shine.

[The Files] I hope he ment the latest updates that might not be available 4-5 years from now.

I agree, just because they have quit, it would be very nice to have those updates on a disk. Or are they hiding somewhere on the server where we can copy/keep them?

I expect HP and MS to keep the patches available for download for a long time. It is possible to save off the installers but I personally don't plan on doing that as I doubt it's necessary.
