Sad day for us all. You can read my news article here, and my statement on the future of the site here.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts and comments.

Wow, Alex that is sad news. I can only hope that the WHS is not killed completly off by all this bad news. I still have my orginale Mediasmart 475 and it is also plugging along like a champ even thou I am in the building stage for a new home server (not certin as to the software base I will use now).
I have to say that I for have enjoyed this site hughly and hope it will continue to move forward to serve the community.

And just yesterday I was telling a family member to hold off on purchasing one because I thought a new model was imminent.

Everyone who sees and experiences my MediaSmart server is blown away by it. The loss of DE in WHS is sad. The loss of the HP MediaSmart server is really really really sad. I still think it's the best piece of hardware/software HP's ever built.

Well, that does it!
I was looking at the X510 and could not decide if I should get it or not.
My Ex470 has some miles on it and building a cute little WHS from parts to be like the HP's is about impossible.

BANG! I pulled the trigger at Newegg. x510 on the way.
I will fire it up, make sure everything is good, fill it with Hitachi 2TB Drives and pack it away for another day.

Between the two, should get me by for maybe 10 years.

Thank God this site will still be here in the future, I'm a slow learner.

:beerme: Microsoft :beerme:

P.S. My wife is going to KILL ME!!!! What have I done.......
P.S.S. I will take the Segate system drive out, replace it with a Hitachi 2TB as well. Seagate = data loss

Yes, very sad news. Call me crazy, but i'm still actually thinking of buying a second ex490 on a deal that Costco is running right now.

I actually think picking up an EX490 or EX495 is still a great move as there is no reason to think that WHS version 1 will not be viable for at least another couple of years. If you find a great deal I would still recommend purchasing

This news isn't too surprising. I wonder if MS will just pull the plug on WHS entirely. With HP out of the game, I would guess their projected sales just dropped from niche-level to microscopic.

:D I had the exact same thought, I don't want to bother researching another solution so I'm 1/2 tempted to just buy a second EX495 at the good prices now, and leave it in the box until my existing one dies.... Although the wife would likely murder me in my sleep should I do so...

The writing was on the wall so to speak, not terribly shocking, but surprising none the less.

As long as I can still get VAIL when it comes out and install it on my system I'm fine with that....Sucks but the system still works and does what I need it to do....

What a kick in the nuts. I wonder if this means component parts will now be for sale direct from he manufacturers.

Certainly very disappointing news.

That said, it didn't stop me from ordering an EX-490 (which I will upgrade) last night to replace my modded EX-470 :encore:

quick question....I have an EX475 w/ about 13TB of storage. i upgraded the RAM to 2TB and everything is stable and works well.

2 questions:
1)Is there an reason to reasonably expect that this thing won't just keep working for years and years storing files and backing up my PCs even if MS and HP are out?
2)Is there any reason for me to rush out and buy one of the newer models while I still can? If so, what functionality/benefits will I realize vs. the EX475?

Interestingly, it looks like HP has sold out of both the EX490 and EX495. The description of each says out of stock, check back soon. I'd bet the HP site has seen the last of these beauties.
