Understanding that WHS will only "see" hard drives up to 2TB in the storage pool, what about an external back up drive? I'm contemplating a 4TB WD MyBook Studio, which consists of an enclosure containing 2 WD 2TB drives which can be configured in RAID0. Will WHS see this device as 4TB of space to receive a back up? If not, what are others with large volumes of data (i.e., anything > 2TB) using to do external back ups?

Thanks.

the limitation is related to the 32 bit WHS system. if you communicate over a network to the drive you will be able to take things from your shares folder and move them to any system on the Network wether they are 32 bit or 64 bit systems with GTP which allows for 4T space. if you connect with the USB port , this only allows the WD book to see more drive space from the USB port. it will not communicate back that it has free space to share with your WHS. I dont have the studio version but my world notebook 1T works that way. and its faster over the network than USB unless of course you have USB 3.0 but then again the WHS is only USB2.0, unless you have a DIY system that supports USB3.0

sounds like fun.

I would not trust my backups to a RAID 0 device. It would have to be at least RAID 0 + 1.

I back up to individual bare drives via robocopy and a cmd script. I do so at the share level. My largest share is a bit over 1TB and it will be a while before it grows to fill the 1.5TB drive I am using as the backup target. I have a bit over 2TB on my WHS at the moment and use two 1.5TB drives for backups.

There is an enormous thread on automating server backups that you should review for ideas.

Hello mgannon. I have connected a WD My Book Essential USB 2.0/3.0 hard drive to my diy WHS. WHS seems to recognize and work with this drive just fine in the storage pool. Just for information.

I thought I should close the loop on this thread. A few weeks back I ordered a couple 2.0TB WD EARS drives to try to upgrade my WD MyBook Studio 2TB (2 x 1TB drives) enclosure. The upgrade didn't fly. The firmware for the MyBook won't recognize anything larger than 1TB drives, and I can't find any newer firmware for the enclosure (and don't want to risk bricking it by trying firmware meant for a newer MyBook device). Instead, I ordered this slick little Rosewill dual bay enclosure from Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817182192. I jumpered the new EARS drives, slid them in the enclosure, fired it up, and formatted a 4TB volume. Plugged it into my WHS, and it saw all 4TB with no issues. Backed up successfully.
