Post subject:  Advanced Format Hard Drives, What To Do???
OK, so I purchased a Samsung Spinpoint 2TB drive. I had in my head that 64MB cache would be the giveaway if it was an advanced format drive, so since this was 32MB I was fine. Well, turns out I was wrong as per the Samsung Site it is a 4k drive #-o I figured I would just set the jumper pin to 7/8 as I have read. I was expecting to see the usual 8 pins (4 along the top x 2 rows) but there were only 4 pins (2x2). So at this point I have no idea if I should set the jumper and if so where, what is considered the 7/8 pins. I checked Samsungs website and no info. I ended up just putting the drive into my WHS. It recognized it without a problem. I transferred files to/from the WHS and no issues with speed (I get about 40-60 MB/s as expected). Am I missing something here, am I at risk for leaving the drive in my WHS as is :-k

For comparison I ran the same test on my WD 2TB Drive (EADS) and the data seemed worse then the Samsung:

I have two of these coming next week that I'll be adding to Andromeda in the near future. I've had good luck with the 2TB F3's. The F3's run cooler than all of the other LP or Green drives, so I expect even better results from the F4s.

One other interesting note, not sure if this has anything to do with the advanced format, but with the setup guide for the drive it talks about UDMA 100 and UDMA 133. The guide states that the drive is set as UDMA 100 by default because some motherboards have problems supporting UDMA 133. You have to download the HUTIL if you want to switch to UDMA 133 (anything to do with the advanced format)???

i think the udma is only related to the older drives pata i believe and not the sata...

just tested my system drive that came with the ex485 and guess what its even slower than my wd ears green drive, really weird a 5400 better than the 7200

OK, so I woke up this morning to watch some tv shows from my server before the boys woke up, and my server was down. In the WHS console I had a bunch of errors about various drives missing (probably 4-5 of my hdd were missing, including the Samsung). I rebooted my server and now everything is back to normal. I will have to keep a closer eye on this, see if it happens again (which means it could possibly be related to the Samsung drive), or if it was just a coincidence

Just a quick update, I woke up again today to find my WHS non responsive. I don't think it is related to the Samsung drive but I am trying to dig further. I have been getting an error that my system space on my C drive keeps getting low. Part of the issue is the WHS logs. There is one log (qsm.log) which gets created each night and comes out to 770MB. I am not sure specifically what this log is for but when I open it up it has data on all the drives in my WHS. I don't know if the low C drive space, this log, and the Samsung drive are all related. I may pull out the Samsung drive and see if I continue to get the same issues with the log. For example, here is an excerpt from this log, it just keeps repeating itself:

In real world use is there a noticeable difference?
In my setup I have twenty drives connected to USB, so my speeds to/from my MSS
are typically between 25MB/s and 40MB/s. The eight drives on SATA are mostly full.

I don't have any USB drives connected to my WHS. I know in the past when I have attached an external USB drive to my WHS I got approx 20-30MB/s transferring files. When copying files from my WHS t o my PC (which would be through Sata) I regularly get between 40-70 MB/s, so it is a pretty significant difference for transferring data

OK, just thought I would give a quick update regarding the Samsung Spinpoint Advanced Format Drives. About 2 weeks ago I replaced the drive with a Seagate LP drive. Ever since I replaced I have not had one issue with my WHS (whereas before my WHS was locking up at least once a week). Also, the qsm log that was causing issues (it would be around 770,000 KB daily) is now down to 1 KB daily. All I can conclude is that the Samsung Advanced Format drive does not play nice with WHS, and I would recommend that every WHS user avoid.

I've been running one of these in my primary production home server for several weeks now with no issue. I think it's more likely an issue with your hardware or config than a generic WHS issue.
