Hi all,
I am pretty much new to this. I've never posted anything on any forums. I bought an HP EX495 December 2010 and it's been working with no problem so far. I only have one 1.5 TB drive in the unit with two partitions. My first problem in order to upgrade, is to get a second drive and my second problem is the system is headless.
To go back to my first problem, I've been looking at the different drives out there and reading some of the postings. I read somewhere from a post, not to put a 7200 RPM and 5900 RPM drives in the same chasis because vibrations will likely cause lots of errors.
If this is true, then it looks like that I'll be needing two drives to upgrade the server. One drive to backup the data currently on the primary and the secondary partition and the other drive for the upgrade to WHS 2011.
Now to my second problem, what's the best way to upgrade to WHS 2011 with all the challenges pose by this hardware?

I don't know where you saw that, but I've been running 7200 and 5400/5900 rpm drives together for years with no ill effects.

Yeah I've not heard of issues with different speed drives before?

There are ways to upgrade to 2011 without being able to see the screen and there are quite a few resources in these forums that'll give you all the options. Personally I know I'm going to be using my Mediasmart for a while so splashed out and got the VGA debug cable which is going to make it super simple when I decide to move up to WHS 2011.

erail and TommySharp are spot on. I too have a hodgepodge of hard drives, Seagate, WD, Hitachi, some of which are 7200 and others are 5400/5900. Not a lick of trouble from anything, and my WHS has run continuously, being powered down only a handful of times. I wouldn't worry about mixing drive speeds. Some people have shied away from WD Green drives, but I have some of those and they too are working flawlessly.

As for loading WHS 2011, if you click on the "WHS 2011" in the nav bar at the top of this page, there is a great wealth of information on how to get WHS 2011 running on the HP MediaSmart Servers, and it covers the EX47x, EX48x and EX49x line. It explains how to get the downloaded WHS 2011 ISO onto a flash drive, how to get it onto the server, making sure the flash drive is in the back, bottom USB port, etc. It even has instructions on how to install the driver package to get the EX48x/EX49x lights working under WHS 2011.

If you would rather work with the server using a VGA monitor and PS/2 keyboard and mouse, there is a Gen3 cable you can buy (links in articles on this site) that was built specifically for the debug port of the MSS servers. They make a couple of varieties...one with VGA and PS/2 ports and another with VGA, PS/2 and serial ports. You can probably just get the one with the VGA and PS/2 and be good to go. The cable is $80, so it's a little pricey, but well worth the investment.

Support at HP told me to avoid drives that are Advanced Format drives (4mb sectors instead of the standard 512k sectors).

Can anyone recommend a non-AF 2TB drive from Seagate/Maxtor? I already have the Hitachi model (0F10311)...

Looking for good options... Problem is, most drives don't identify whether they are AF drives or not :(

As time passes the older drives which you seek will slowely vanish but you can still find them. If your running WHS2011 there should be no issue if they are AF or not. If your running WHS v1 then you can still use them but you have to be familiar with how to set them up for proper use.

As for mixing various RPM Rated Drives and vibration issues mentioned in the original post I have used 7200 and 5400 RPM Drives in the same enclosures and not experienced any of the mentioned issues. The beauty of WHS is that you can use a mix of different drives unless you enter the relm of the RAID then its a game changer but thats an entirely different topic.

I just bought a couple of these Hitachi 2TB for my EX495 and they have been running fine. They are not AF drives, so no worry with WHS v1. They go on sale from time to time, got them for around $70 each.
