It absolutely convinced me. Although being a HP Master ASE it was a subject I had no knowledge of. The help given to everyone involved made me certain it was the correct purchase.

This site did not influence my decision to buy my original EX475, but it certainly allowed me upgrade it and to utilize it more effectively. Ultimately your site was instrumental in convincing me to purchase a EX495. Great site...keep it coming... :encore:

This site absolutely did influence me. I had been reading the posts here for several months prior to buying my MSS. The info here is great and I truly appreciate all that I was able to read. I look forward to learning more now that I have joined the "group".

+1. I'm usually not confident that official customer support actually knows anything about the products they support. Information from the user community often means a lot more to me as they may have actually have experience with the products.

My first post! Love this site, when researching home NAS servers on the web, this site consistently popped up with useful answers and extra helpful information.
I am just about to purchase a HP Mediasmart system, and this site has indeed influenced that decision.
What irks me a bit is the fact that I can't purchase the current latest model the EX495 - not yet available in UK and I don't fancy importing. I haven't quite given up on this yet, however I may just get the EX490 and possibly upgrade CPU/RAM later if needed - again this site is amazing for the useful information on the differences and upgrading options, it makes interesting reading and I don't even have a server yet!!
I have spent weeks deliberating on which manufacturer - even considered building my own, but spare time is something I don't have a lot of with 2 young kids, and what I like about HP in particular is their 'bolt-on' extra which hopefully will allow me to effortlessly back up boot images of my various home PC's and restore them easily in case of failure. If I got that wrong, please enlighten me.
I have a Buffalo Linkstation 1TB which has served its purpose; however it's rapidly filling up, so the need for more shared storage is strong. And of course I'm looking forward to 'free' remote access (currently pay Diino for 100GB of web storage), always-on lower-power-consumption hardware, home media-streaming, iPhone use, easy expansion for my media-enthusiast needs and hopefully even camera/surveillance/security monitoring.
Terrific site and great forums!

Welcome, indy, thanks for the comments and feedback. While the EX495 isn't available in your area, I understand that the X510 DataVault should be available and it is identical hardware and software to the EX495. :encore:

To re-iterate the comments here, knowing that there's active discussion in a vibrant community was a *critical* factor in deciding the buy the MSS.

This site, the microsoft technet discussions, and another community site helped me come to this conclusion that WHS & MSS were a viable replacement for an existing NAS.

I'd almost definately have gone for another basic NAS had these sites not been active.

Thanks, Yazza, thats VERY helpful and timely - somehow I missed the X510 model in my research! The X510 is available from many suppliers in the UK in 1, 2 and 3TB formats with the faster cpu. I'd hate to have bought the EX490 and then discover this - close one!
