Yes this site convinced me. No offense to the PR folks but most promotional materials for products like this just do not provide nearly enough information for someone with even a basic level of technical knowledge. This site however does ;)

My EX490 arrives tomorrow.

I was thinking between this one and ReadyNAS NV+ and the kind of support and feedback I got from people here helped me dial down on this server. So many members explained the difference between just a NAS and full blown server, plus also after buying the amount of support and help I get from this forum makes this a best buy.

Absolutely. I was going to do a DIY server. I began my research on the subject in November 09 and a link led me to you. The rest, as they say, is history. I check in daily for news and updates.

Thanks for all your willingness to share your vast knowledge and incites.

Even though this site did not influence my decision to purchase a ex490.
I am happy to say I am glad I found this site after my purchase.
This site is more helpful that HP.

I'm one of those 3 (so far) votes that said this site helped me decide NOT to buy the MSS - but what it did do is convince me that WHS was the way to go, so I rolled my own. Initially the goal was to do it cheaper than the MSS, and since so many were doing things like cracking the MSS open to upgrade the RAM to 2GB and there was a lot of experimenting with upping the CPU, I ended up incorporating those ideas in my build. 2GB RAM and a 4050e dual-core CPU. I also started out with 3x750GB drives (almost 2 years ago - 1TB was just out and WAY too expensive) and ended up with a sub-$600 system. I've since added drives but now I am out of space and need to build a new server, this time with 2TB drives.

This site definitely influenced my decision to buy. I had been concerned that the HP stuff was too "closed" for me -- I really like to tinker, upgrade, modify -- but the information I learned here helped me see that I could indeed unlock the MediaSmart series.

Thanks to everyone for your contributions.

New user here who has been reading the baords for quite a few months and want to say thanks to the whole community on this site for influencing my decision to buy an MSS. I have had it up and running for about 6 months and recently added a Sans Digital TR5M enclosure and thanks to the forums on here everything is working great! No off to another thread to ask my first question :D

I am not an I.T. professional. I have developed a fair bit of knowledge by necessity but don't really enjoy maintaining my computers or home network. I have the usual litany of stories of things "breaking" in my system and me having to figure out how to fix this or that (usually Windows).

I have dreaded the day that my NAS would fill up because of the potential problems I will have getting the replacement working satisfactorily. The day has come where the NAS is full.

This site was a wonderful find; a whole user community dedicated to MSS. Because of this site, I felt much more comfortable buying a EX490 and actually feel hopeful that I will be able to get it set up to my liking. (Happening this weekend.) Without this site, I doubt I would have spent all the bucks for a full server and probably would have stuck with another (quirky) NAS.

Network Engineer here building a small office to do repairs as a side business. I wanted a server I could remote to and update files for my businesses. The media part was and is a big part of my daily life anyway. All work and no play.........
This site helped me to decide to buy a x510 data vault. ($440 from newegg)

Thanks for the excellent reviews!!! I hope to be able to contribute something useful to this community.

Thanks
B

All the questions I had were answered in previous posts. I was able to determine from the plethora of knowledge on this board that the ex490 was the right server for me, since it was only 300 bucks on newegg and I could easily and cheaply upgrade it if needed and find the ways to do so here.
