Over the year or so since the MSS has been available, we've seen numerous people post stating that they purchased the MSS after finding the resources and helpful community here at MediaSmartServer.net. I'm interested in getting some statistics about how many sales this site may have directly influenced. If you purchased an MSS and your decision to purchase was directly influenced by this site please vote in the poll.

You may vote in the poll anonymously, but if you are willing I would appreciate hearing specifics factors that influenced your decision in one way or another.

I found the site after I'd already purchased my MSS and was looking for add-ins for it.

Helped me decide and then helped me to convince several others to make the same decision.

Yes, I was encouraged after finding this site. I looked into support options beforehand as that is becoming critical (and harder to find) for operating systems and servers.

As John above - although I would probably have bought one anyway!

I purchased mine a year ago and have since talked 4 friends into purchasing from the same supplier also.

Would have recommended another one (along with PCH) but when I emailed my supplier about the one problem I had with the last one showing a motherboard temperature of 126c he ignored and continues to ignore me.

I even sang his praises on this very forum on more than one occasion although maybe now I should name & shame him after his total lack of after-sales support?

Very pleased with the concept of the MSS though... :mss:

Regards,

I would say that this site certainly helped me fully understand what I understood to be possible with the MSS.

What I've found very valuable has been the wealth of information and the overwhelming willingness of this community to help out us newbies. It has made the WHS and MSS experience a very much more enjoyable and fruitful one.

Ha... ummm... found this site after walking into "The Source" and purchasing a MediaSmart EX470 and found out it wasn't such an easy task to get working.

I'd actually been reviewing a couple of these boxes over the past week, but while debating on purchasing, found this one readily available in town (otherwise would have had to order something and wait two weeks or so).

So... here looking for knowledge and assistance on getting the unit working before I loose any more hair... and hopefully learning a LOT more about home servers along the way.

This is probably THE most useful, positive and friendly :) forum of all those I frequent in my many fields of interest. Had I found it before I hit my Restore problem, I could have saved myself a lot of time and trouble and headed straight this way.............

It has - I'd been looking with interest at the EX487 since I first heard of it, and I had one unanswered question after reading all I could find. I did send a message to HP Presale, however I haven't yet (as of this morning) received a reply in nearly a week. I posted the same question on this terrific forum after I discovered it, and John Bick was kind enough to post an answer in less than a day. I did immediately select the "Thanks Post" button in his reply.
I've had good luck with forums over the years on numerous interests, and have always thought that a community of helpful people sharing their knowledge and experience is, more often than not, more helpful then the "official" support options available in one's field of interest.
I'll be looking forward to the early February release of the EX487 - the best pre order deal I've found thus far is at Newegg, where the preorder price is $699.

Bob

Thanks for the kind words...

If you have not ordered yet you might want to consider getting the EX485 with a single disk and adding a 1TB drive on your own. There is really nothing to the installation, you will be larger capacity and you will probably spend less than the price differential. (I made the mistake of ordering an EX475 where I could have saved by getting an EX470 and adding a larger drive, so I speak from experience!) Or you could get a 1.5TB drive...

But welcome aboard either way!

John, thanks again for the welcome, and the advice on the EX485!
I just had a look and Newegg has the EX485 for pre-order at $549, which represents a savings of $150 compared to the EX487. Given the extraordinary deals that are so frequently available on 1TB (or better) SATA drives, it does make much more sense to opt for the 485, and then add drives for a higher total capacity than the base 487 offers out of the box.
The other encouraging items I've been following on this forum concern how well the MSS has been working for folks running the Windows 7 beta. I repartitioned the drive on my laptop this weekend to give the beta a spin while it's still available, and I have to agree with the general opinion out there - it's remarkably stable for a beta, and it works quite well with existing Vista drivers - I remember drivers being the only obstacle I ran into as an early Vista adopter, and it looks as if that will be a very easy transition path with Windows 7.
Methinks I should call our accountant tomorrow and schedule having our taxes done - I'm anticipating a decent refund, and the timing should fall very nicely with the release of the EX48X series in early February!
