Greetings all.

I've been cruising the site for about 3 weeks as I did research on the MSS from HP, home build options, simple NAS, etc. I was leaning towards home build, but with the wife'ly success of the TiVo a few years ago (appliance based solution instead of custom build and learning multiple softwares), I decided to go HP MSS. Happy wife, happy life.

I've been married 8 years, am a DBA during the day, teach Grad and UG InfoSys every other year or so at the local University. I enjoy spending time with the family, playing softball and golf, target shooting, and watching collegiate and professional football. I'm looking forward to seeing what the EX485 can do. Should be here tomorrow!

Found the site through Google, at the same time as HomeServerHacks.

I was aware of the MSS's for a while, but didn't really get serious about one until I set up an HTPC with an Intel Mac Mini running Plex. I was looking at NAS devices, and the MSS's seemed to be a nice, unbox-it-and-go solution. After reading on these very forums that v2.5 could be installed on 47x models, I decided to take the plunge. I ended up scoring a brand new (open box) 1TB 475 on eBay for $305.

Now I'm in the process of transferring my media to the server and figuring out just how Mac-friendly these things are. Still not sure if Twonky/Media Collector is going to work for me. BTW, last night I did my first test of video playback from the MSS to Plex on the Mini over the wired network. 720p h.264 movie plays as smoothly as from a local drive. No stutters or dropped frames. Looks like it'll do what I got it for. If I can trick it out further: Fireplay, consolidated iTunes & iPhoto libraries, then I'll be very happy.

I'm probably not unique in that my home network and number of macs/PCs gradually grew, and with it the need for general back-up, as well as an accumulation of more and more media, especially video. I recognized the eventual need for some type of NAS device, so I started to familiarize myself with the options. Frankly, I had not heard of "WHS" or "MSS" until I came across what seemed like a great deal on the LX195 along with a short description. After some quick googling it sounded like just what I needed, so I pulled the trigger on the unit and then headed here to learn more about WHS/MSS while I waited for delivery. I figured if nothing else the LX195 would be a good experiment for me. The experiment was a success, and within a few weeks I decided to move up to the EX485 for its expanded capabilities (in place for only two days so far). So, the LX195 was really a "gateway" product for me. I have now also integrated SageTV into the WHS along with their HD200 extender, which is working out well. One of my goals for the near future is to start getting all the home video onto the server so the family can enjoy the memories more easily and more often. The MSS is turning out to be a VERY useful addition to my network and I look forward to making it do more and more. I now consider it a necessity. MediaSmartServer.net has proved to be a very useful resource and I value the knowledgeable folks here - this site definitely enhances the ownership experience!

Found site while looking for other info on the WHS, was going to build my own but actual found I could buy one all setup and ready to for for less. I also had NDAS storage on my network but could not access the info from the Intrnet so found server to be a good choice. Now when I need to have some files I can get them from anywhere I might be as long as there is a good Internet connection. I setup my WHS with 2-1TB drives + the 750 GB it came with. Have had it for about a month now and find overall it works fine. Running 3 PC's with it 1 on WIN -7 RTM 7600 build 1 on Vista Ulitimate 32 bit and 1 with dual boot config, WIN 7 and Vista. So far no backup problems for any of the machines.
Was doing some read of this site and liked the questions and the answers and the way the site is laid out. My thnaks to the owner of this site for all of his hard work.

I was eyeing an MSS for several months, after hearing about it first on Windows Weekly with Leo Laporte and Paul Thurrott. Thurrott has a couple MSSs and has been very positive about them as a good pairing of WHS and solid hardware.

My family's photo and video collection is getting quite large, outgrowing the desktop I've used to archive them. Plus, we've got four computers consistently using our wireless network. An MSS just seemed like the best option out there.

The only thing I'm struggling with is how I'm going to back up those MSS HDs offsite. Currently, I use Carbonite to backup my main HD. Not sure I know how to get that to work on the MSS drives. If I can't, then I'll have to look for another option. It looks like S3 is incredibly expensive. Right now, I pay $50/year for "unlimited" storage with Carbonite. Works well.

Depending on how much storage you need, KeepVault gives something like 40GB for $49 or 100 GB for $99 per year and up.

I found this site while searching the internet for the best price on an ex485 (Google). I have an HP MV2020 I bought for storage and backup, but it doesn't do everything I needed to do. I have an HP MediaSmart 47" LCD (yes, I own a lot of defunct HP product lines) that I would like to stream more video to than my Media Vault can handle. I got a screaming deal with a coupon from LiveHotDeals. So far, I am happy with my 485 and I am grateful for the answers to my questions from this forum. I don't think I would have purchased the 485 without being able to rely on current users. Thanks!

Hey, my first post here ! You guys are in for it, I know so little (haha). A guy linked me to you over at AVS. It was an old thread 2008, so you guys must have been around awhile.

Welcome! Yes, I started the site in July 2007, before the MSS was even released. :mss:

Welcome to the gang Jay :mss:

So why did you choose the EX495 over a DIY?
