I am in the UK and I have a WHS V1 which has been happily working for very nearly 10 years (switched on) and with the same system disk. I upgraded the second disk at an early stage to increase capacity. It is made by Tranquil PC in the UK (to give them a plug). I am constantly amazed how well this machine has done and how useful it has been. However, it must be getting near the end now and is nearly full up. No actual sign of any problems but I think I should replace it but there does not seem to be anything obvious out there to switch to. It has five disk bays so I just plug in another disk to back up the backups etc. Simple and quick! I also use it as a music server but this is a secondary requirement. It has of course built in software for all functions and I have only added a few add-ins such as the Stablebit Scanner (to keep an eye on things) and the Serviio media server for music.

Can anyone advise on a suitable replacement that is very quiet, is designed to leave running the majority of the time and that can be backed up itself easily and quickly (for off site backups). I assume (but not sure) it will be a NAS and I will have to purchase software in order to back up my Win 10 PC daily. I would want disk images as well so that I can quickly restore my PC if the worst happens. Acronis True Image software saved my professional life around 8 years ago but I am not up to date these days as I am retired.

Any advice greatfully received.

Vic

I use a readynas. You can get them with various config.
how many bays
total storage
cpu
ram
and types/counts of ports.
Mine is a old rn316 unit. It has been running flawless for years.

For media it has
Plex media server
emby server
twonky server

for media on it I connect to it with firesticks using kodi . I don't use the dlna servers.

Caveat ,it says you can use mixed size drives but it will waste space till all the drives are the same size.
It supports up to 12 GB drives now ,mine is 10GB
I would suggest the second drive to be the largest you plan on because it is the redundant drive. At least for up to a 6 bay drive after 6 bays it uses 2 drives for redundant.
It takes like forever to sync a net new drive but adding files is extremely fast.
Also I use easeus plus the built in back up because it creates a PXE boot disk for each pc which works with win10.
The interface is great with several apps that can be installed.
If you have say a ESATA Sansdigital Towerraid it works if you get the readynas with a esata port for expansion.
Or just run a backup from the readynas to it if it is connected to say a pc
Also you can't just plug a drive in with data to copy to the other drives, it will format the drive so you must copy the data from outside the nas. Then you can insert the drive to be formatted so you can reuse it.
The default free os is linux but you can install other os systems like microsoft server.

You can use the product finder at:
https://www.netgear.com/home/products/c ... d-storage/

FYI,
I still use the ex490 as a secondary backup of the clients.
They are a mix of home and pro of win 10

Since it's already proven to be mostly bullet proof, I favor the MSS hardware myself. Unless there is a specific reason you absolutely have to have USB3.0, why not just upgrade?

$50 KDM Power PSU (to replace existing aged unit)
$35 Yorkfield Core2 Quad Q9400s CPU 2.67ghz
$30 4 gb RAM
$10 for a tube of quality thermal paste to re-paste your CPU and North Bridge
$35 two upgraded 80mm case fans & 2 30mm heatsink fans (to replace aged units & upgrade heatsink cooling)
$40 WHS11
$30 StableBit Drive Pool (for GPT pooling)
$30 for VGA cable (for OS install & StableBit install)
$120 One 2tb WD Gold Enterprise system disk
$600 for three 6tb WD Gold Enterprise Storage Drives
$980 - Maxed out 20tb MSS

VS

NAS
(example)
$750 ReadyNas 314 four bay Diskless w/Dual core Atom 2.1 Ghz / 2gb RAM
$600 four 4tb Enterprise Storage Drives
$1350 - 16tb ReadyNas

FYI.
A readynas will probably be a little more pricey than what Lionstreet stated.
Due to limited quantities because newer models are out now.

I actually found a new ReadyNas 314 in Google Shopping for $753 (plus freight) that I used for reference. So the budget isn't totally impossible. There are other very strong NAS brands as well, Synology & Thecus for example. But Ruben is right, it's likely the NAS cost referenced is bottom dollar.

OP didn't post which MSS he has, but the refurbish upgrade would work best on a ex49x, so add $100-$150 if you don't already have one. Also If I remember correctly, you'd need to do a BIOS update if your using an ex48x with a Core2 Quad.

Another big variable are costs of the drives. You could probably also find Hitachi branded enterprise class drives (also mfg'd by WD) for less than the Gold's or Red Pro's.

The max upgraded AMD chip for the ex47x only puts you comparable to something close to the OE intel MSS. So if your planning a use that's over and above backup and file serving, you probably wouldn't want to use this model.

I assume you looked at the rn314 which is EOL.
Same as my rn316 but I still get updates.
Some stores may still have them in stock.
Newer models have more ram, faster processors and faster usb and sata ports.
In my experience I only have used the netgear readynas but yes there are lots of other brands that are cheaper but I am extremely satisfied with mine.
As far as performance, GUI interface and options for apps.
