Hi folks, lets try this again, seems site timed out? spent an hour entering info, hit submit, and all went away... aarrgghh….

always do copy before submit!!!

OK.. back here again (that's a good thing) EX495 running strong.,. until early this year, started getting "connector" errors at PC startup, 2 separate pc's getting same errors..

tried running connector install, get to entering server password and get error:

"This operation cannot be completed at this time, Please try again later"...

Control center is also failing, getting "cannot reach page"...

So I came back here to the brain trust, entered "connector" into the forum search window and Norton triggers a malicious site "Alert"...???

HELP!!!!!

I could be the server has somke issues that you don't see because of you can't get the console to run.
Have you tried remote desktop connection.
This allows you to login like a user to the server just like your desktop.
You can run the console from there as well as check disk status.

If you never tried it.
Easy way if open file explorer select networks you should see your server.
Right click and select remote desktop.
Login is
User administrator
password whatever you have set for the for your account password.
I would start with bad or full drives ,look at the event viewer and clear out all the event logs.
Try to run the console from there and see if something is amiss.

at login did you try administrator as user with your normal passwod.
also you may need to clear out the auto login if it is incorrect.

Yes, tried admin, still get the "cannot complete at this time"... This issue is all very reminiscent of a previous occurrence of this same kind of issue (blinking blue health light)? I did have a recent "event" where all the drive? light went red? I think it was near a power outage, when my ups failed after just a few minutes. I powered off the server, and it seemed to restore back to normal blue (teal?) teal lights... I'm thinking another server recovery is in my future...

Reread your recc's above and noticed the new "user" credentials, not just run as admin.. Administrator and my old password got me RDP access...! I'll post the screen snip's, says it recovered from a serious event, points at DEP? Gave me some options, not sure how to answer... you said try the console from there... say more about how to do that?

Hi Ruben.. Been wandering around the console and trying to make sense of what is happening... Here's my thoughts...

1. I think server storage looks ok?
2. Smart shows drive 0 is "yellow"... I think it has been showing that for some time... I'm having trouble seeing all of the smart data? The RDP window seems restricted? I think I have been waiting for smart data to show more degradation to take action on drive 0...
3. Health is a bit messy... but all of the checked "ignores" are old... and the new ones don't seem catastrophic in nature...
4. The two "new" artifacts are the connector console access failures and the Firefly DEP "Blue screens"? Is there an upgrade for Firefly?
5. I'm still kind of thinking that a server recovery might be warranted? I would also run each drive thru disk check...

Thoughts? pix follow...

TY for reviewing Ruben!!!

Hey Datageek, great to see your still around!

You wrote you found firefly errors, Have you tried to pull the firefly app out? I had similar blinking red drive lights, share availability, and console issues recently. I traced it thru the error log to errors with addin stablebit scanner. After being forced into a hard restart and resetting the scan times to non use hours, it resolved. I then did one or two normal restarts just to get the OS back into shape, giving it 5 to 10 minutes between each to make sure everything loaded and there was no drive activity. Its been about a month and so far that worked. But I might just remove it anyhow.

I started using the stablebit scanner because as you, my HomeServerSmart app {v3.3.8.6} wont do either the short or long disk self tests either. It never has. The tests just hang at 10%, Such is the dilemma of running unsupported software sometimes... Maybe we could convince msawyer91 to open up the hood of his scanner again for us. I don't think anyone, even yakuza, thought the little MSS would still have the following that it does.

Anyhow, v1 can be sensitive to drive condition too. Since you show enough bad sectors and read errors on drive 0 to throw a flag, that might be issue as well. Especially since you had power failures. As an fyi, mine show the same 3 prefails, but the drives show all green. So if the addin suggestion doesn't help, backup your shares with a direct file transfer to an external HDD and dock. Prolly the best HDD deal out there right now for an enterprise class drive is with HGST. My personal preference with single drive docks happens to be the Startech SDOCKU33EF because it has a fan to keep the backup HDD cool during long backup cycles. Not to mention their US based customer service is amazing.

Shut off file duplication, delete older backups and run a clean-up to pick up drive space. Give demigrator a chance to run and Drive 0 should be the first to clear. Then backup your clients using BDBB. From there run each drive thru chkdsk, pick out the ones that pass muster and just to be safe, grab a new drive for slot 0. It prolly isn't a good idea to do a drive copy since you don't want to move any file errors over to a new drive.

So Id also agree with your starting with a fresh updated OS using the WSUS off-line update tool for v1.

http://www.mediasmartserver.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=14784&p=105732#p105732

Rebuilding, especially since you have a questionable drive 0 is prolly the best action plan fr the long term.

TY Lion! Great details.. will parse thru all steps..

I have an older Thermaltake BlacX, I like the idea of the startech fan... Your talking about a storage drive to hold all? of my current files off of my V1, connected to V1 USB port? or my Desktop? What size of HGST drive? I have 4 2.0's in my V1...

My current RDP window is really difficult to navigate, can't see all of the sub windows, no nav bars to see full console window? any recc's to improve that?

I have 4 WD red 2.0's in my V1 now... Would I replace just drive 0? with HGST drive? another 2gb (max for V1?)…

Is it time to move away from the V1? WHS2011 ? or ?

Thanx Yak...

So the two main takeaways are.
Replace your bottom bay os drive.
Run recovery on the server.
And I use the Startech dual bay model.
It is so easy to move it anywhere that I am working on with spare drives.
PC, server, nas. Whatever.
I can plug it in usb and drop a drive in it to run chkdsk.
Copy download ,ETC.
