I own a EX 490 which runs WHS I believe v 1. Ever since I upgraded to win10 the EX490 has become incompatible and cannot perform any backups. Is there a way to upgrade/update the EX490 so I can still use it with win10? I have kept win7 on an older laptop but even that takes for ever to connect with the server at this point. WHS 2011 is not available anymore and 2012R is prohibitive due to cost. Any help making the 490 usable again is appreciated.

Humm I have a ex490 with whs1 and three desktops and one laptop all with win 10.
All of them work fine for backups
Now I did have issues with the laptop due to hibernation that it would not wol so I changed the power plan to never sleep on the drive.

what does the error show when you view backups in the console.
when you view backups it will show fail but you can drill down and see a explanation and or what drive or drives failed.

If it were me I would figure out the ip of the server, then ping the server from each pc.
If it is a local lan it should be extremely fast.

I also would check the speed that the nic in each pc is running at. then check the server nic.
It should match what the card is. if it is a gigabit card it should show a connection of 1 gigabit.
For win 10 right click on the internet connection in the taskbar lower right,Then select open network and sharing center.
Then on connections select the link.

after that whatever device you have be it switch or router may be bad or have a bad port.
You could try a direct connect to the pc and run a backup for a test.

also with win 10 even if you have one drive you will have 3 partitions.
2 hidden and 1 active. So you would need to reconfigure your backups

One last item is if you use wifi then that may be the culprit you might need to change the channel if it is 2ghz.
it will run slow if you have other devices on 2ghz causing interference or it is out of range.

FYI as a final note it is a little cumbersome doing a pc restore using the cd due to the multiple hidden partition's as well as modern pc's use uefi.
you also did not state for your win 10 and 7 what bit or version you installed. 32/64 home, pro etc.

I just had to add my 2 cents. While whs2011 is not coming from microsoft anymore, If you wanted it I believe you could still find a copy around the net.
Now, I did some looking for win2012E and it is all but gone, while R2 is still around it is still in the $400-$600 which I agree is not worth it.
There for awhile you could pickup a win2012E for $200-$300 which I did.
As far as R2, I know it was just supposed to just be some enhancements, but I tried the trial version of it and had nothing but hell with it.

I just looked on ebay and found 2-3 copies of whs2011for under $150. I realize new they were like $55 but still, $100 is not bad for a os that can use larger then 2tb drives.

Now all this being said, you would want to upgrade the cpu and ram and having a vga adapter would be very helpful.
All in all, upgrading to a different os is really not that easy or cheap.

Sometime you might want to watch is the HP Gen 10 microservers that are coming out. They are under $400 and they use CLEAROS which is not windows but has a lot of the same options for addins that windows did.

Lastly, sometimes you can find a mediasmart on ebay that comes with whs 2011 for not a lot and then you would have spare parts which is good (since HP doesn't have any)

Good Luck and enjoy.

P.S. Can't help you with win10 as I refuse to use it. I have 5 desktops and 7 laptops and no win 10.
