Hey whoever's left lol,

I came across this site while trying to see if there aware ways to improve the performance of WHS.

http://www.jesseweb.com/tech/microsoft/ ... me-server/

The user of the page identifies the following:

Quote:
Note: These settings have been tested on both custom home server systems and 3rd party home server systems (ex. Acer Aspire easyStore h340)

By default after installation, Windows Home Server is missing some essential configuration settings to make it run optimally. Here is a list here of the various tweaks I have discovered and tested:

[*]Create a page file (default WHS installation does not use page files)
---Ideally, do this on a non pooled, non C/D drive.
[*]Set system to run at best performance
[*]Configure the drives (as you add a drive, you need to configure these settings)
---Enable optimize for performance for each drive
---Enable dma on each drive
---Turn on write caching on all drives (and advanced performance where possible)
-----Note: This will automatically be disabled if you convert your home server to a domain controller
[*]Configure power settings
---Turn off power save on the network card if experiencing network connectivity issues:
---Set power settings – hard drive power down to NEVER, System standy to NEVER
[*]Configure the network
---Ensure the server’s NIC jumbo frame size and your client’s jumbo frame size are set to the same value (otherwise you will have slow network transfers)
---Disable TCP Chimney if experiencing network connectivity issues:
from CMD, run Netsh int ip set chimney DISABLED
[*]Configure home server settings
---Disable any settings/features/addins (ex. media sharing, trial AV that came with your home server) that you don’t use

Has anybody done any of these previously?

The only tweaking I do on my x-510 is:
CCleaner to clean the extra files out.
Windows DiskCleaner (only on C drive).
Windows Defrag (only on C drive).

I upgraded my network to all giga router and giga switches and new cat6 cables.

That's it, if it's not broke, don't fix it lolololool

I am pleased with it as is. I get in house file transfers at about 50-60 mb/s and I don't access it remotely.
I use serviio to stream to my samsung tv and 3 of us can run videos at the same time with no problems.

I have been tweaking OS'es since dos 3 and what I have learned is sooner or later, that one setting will blow up and you end up reloading.

All you suggest may help, if anybody tries them, let us know how it goes, might help others..

Good Luck

Thanks for the reply Gardian.

I'll do a diskcleanup and defrag but only on the C: drive.

I do agree with tweaking. I would be worried about something going wrong and creating a nightmare with the server. Better to leave it as it is :-)

Ccleaner has a free version, it keeps the C: drive from filling up with junk files.
The registry cleaner I would be very careful with on a server.
I have had a couple of pc's that had to be reloaded because the registry got cleaned to good :-)
Good Luck
Best things I did was to uninstall anything I wasn't using like Twonkey, ImageMagick, and stop the wireless service which would never be used. Freeup a bit of space and save a little bit of resources.
