So, the day has come. My 3 x 2TB drives are full in my modded (CPU + RAM) EX495. I'm looking to expand the storage by using the eSata port and 4 other drives. What drives/enclosures would people suggest at the moment?

Using StableBit Drivepool.

Existing drives:

1 x 1.5TB WD Black (FAEX)

1 x 2TB WD Green (EARX)

2 x 2TB WD Green (EZRX)

Would this esata jbod:

ICY BOX IB-3640SU3 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ICY-BOX-IB-36 ... SwpzdWs5kn)

with these disks:

4TB WD Green (WD40EZRX) (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Western-Digit ... SweW5VcddM)

work?

Would I need anything else to get it working? What's all this about a "port multiplier"?? Would I need this or is it built into the EX495?

Many thanks. :)

Do you sleep your server? If you do you will want to look for the words "Power Sync" which means the enclosure will power down and up with the server.
I have been looking at these on newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=mediasonic+enclosure&N=-1&isNodeId=1
They have 5 bay and 8 bay and all them I have checked have power sync. Plus the prices are not to bad.

I have a 5 bay Lani Li and it does not have power sync, so to use it, the server has to be powered up and then you power up the enclosure and then plug it in via usb 3, then the server will see it.
Otherwise, when the server comes out of sleep, the enclosure has a fit and all the lights start flashing.

What OS are you using WHS 2011 or one of the 2012 servers ?

Good Luck

Whoops - too late - ordered the enclosure and 2xHD last night. However, it's looking like the enclosure I ordered may have Power Sync:

Purchased: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172126399936? ... EBIDX%3AIT
Sync info: http://icyboxforum.de/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=14387

Also, bought 2x 4TB WD Greens (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261916847897? ... EBIDX%3AIT)
I did briefly compare Reds to Greens and read something about "aggressive head parking" on the Greens, but the 3 I have at the moment have been cracking + SMART reports no problems after a few years' use.

I'm running WHS2011.

Anything else I need to know - or will it all just Plug n Play (yeah right!!)?

:)

It is about 50/50 on the greens, I have seen people say they are bad and people that love them.
I have 2 1.5 greens and both have failed after a year. They came in used 490 from ebay, so hard telling how hard they were run.
Enjoy, I am a fan of Icydock stuff!
Good Luck

Yeah - I had few few probs with reconditioned/used HDDs. Pledged only ever to buy new + no problems since :)

Thanks for the advice - just one more thing - will I need to format the drives when they arrive, or will WHS2011/Drivepool/EX495 take care of everything?

I always stick my new drives in my usb to sata dock and format them, just to make sure they are not DOA.
I would format them first, if the system needs to do anything else with them it will let you know.
Good luck and enjoy.

Great - it appears to have killed my server!

All seemed OK at the start - plugged it in - Stablebit Drivepool recognised my two new drive + I chose install to pool. Done + pool increase.

However, now - lots of failed starts - or runs for a few minutes + then crashes (blue, blinking light on front).

Not sure if it's this or whether it's the damn windows updates issue (couldn't update - get errors + TrustedInstaller.exe running constantly at 50%CPU!)

It really is a love/hate relationship with this thing...

So sorry to hear, some days ya just can't win. I know the hardware is getting a little long in the tooth, but still should be working better then that.
Good Luck

Have you got the stablebit scanner?
If not think you can install it free for 30 days.
It will scan the drives and report smart data for you.

It could be you have a bad drive out of the box

Good point. I do have the Home Server Smart 2013 add-on which shows these to be good, I think.

When ya start playing with esata, I have seen many posts that turned out to be a low quality esata cable was the problem, if all else checks out good, might buy a good quality esata cable to try, I like to have spares anyway. :-)
Good Luck.
