So it's obviously been a bit sine I purchase a hard drive for my server. I was greeted with a plethora of choices: desktop, enterprise, surveillance, archive. Il looking at 6tb drive for my MSS running ws2012e R2 with drive pool. The extra space would be nice so I can enable more duplication. My question is based on this post: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/enterpri ... liability/

Being as the bad version is double the price over desktop version, which drive is better? Also which drives do you run in your system?

I buy only reds. Get them on sale and but them 2-3 at a time. The last two, one was DOA and newegg rma'ed it within a week.
That's my 2 cents, they run cool and I have mirrored ssd for the OS. Works great for me. win2012E. Drive pool.
I backup the os to a 1tb red. lololoololol
But yes, there are a lot of choices and prices flying around out there.
Good Luck

I'm looking at seagate drives. I've only ever used seagate drives.

The only drives I've had fail were seagate or maxtor. Just me and 30 years of pc's and laptops.

But I have seen some seagates that have been running for 10+ years and still going. Plus 10 years ago I think all drives were better quality. :-)
So now days I think it's luck of the draw, batch to batch.
Good Luck..... Happy Holidays everybody!!!

I agree with declining quality, Warrantys reflect that for sure. Also seagate bought maxtor and samsung platter HDDS. Sucks because I ether spend 200 or 300 depending on the 6tb versions I decide to get.

Just me, but I would buy 3 of the $200 instead 2 of the $300. But I am willing to gamble and like having extra drives on hand. You could get one of each, but might be a long time before you would know and by then they all will have changed anyway.
Good luck with whatever you decide. It is tuff to make hardware decisions when stuff changes every 1 to 3 years.
As long as I have a couple extra I'm happy.
