I recently added a Win7/64 laptop to our network and installed the client software from our EX495 running WHS v.1. Everything appeared to install properly, and I was able to execute a manual backup.

But it won't back up automatically. Ever. I uninstalled and reinstalled the client software, but it still won't back up automatically.

The backup schedule for this server is 6:00 PM to 5:00 PM (e.g pretty much all the time), and the machine is on the wired network from 9:00 to 5:00 every day. I have another Win7/64 machine on this same server, and it backs up automatically every day like it's supposed to.

I can always force a manual backup, which I'm doing whenever I get the warning about "no backup in 5 days," so I don't think it's a firewall problem, but I must be missing _something_.

Anyone know what to start looking for?

I use a win 7/64 desktop with no issues.
However I have a win 8.1/64 laptop. That I found it kept going to sleep and part of the issue was the power settings disable wol.
Once I changed the settings to not disable it. It warns you that it could wake at a bad time like at a airport.
It does still sometimes not backup but it it works better.
I also found that I have better results if the power pack is always plugged in.

Hmm. I'll have to check the WOL settings on this laptop, but the user is at her desk nearly the whole day, so the machine is available for backup during the backup window.

Hi all, long time viewer and short time registrant to this excellent forum.

One PC here has stopped its daily update as of August 28th last, prior to that it was consistent for eighteen months.

Manual backup on the client or from the WHS was always successful, just that the task would not trigger Daily after power on.

The O/s is WHS 2011 and it is backing up to a V1 WHS on H-P hardware.

The only culprit could be:

* An SSD replaced the original hard disk for the boot and O/s partition; Daily backup succeeded for thirteen days
* A raft of Windows updates were installed

The usual trouble shooting didn't help; Such as using another WHS, re-installing the Client Connector and checking the correct Version of same.

What I did today was to restore the boot - O/s disk, which as I said is now an S-S-D.

Restore from a WHS backup just prior to the failure (August 22nd) was totally successful and the PC (WHS - 2011) commenced an immediate backup, without user intervention.

Here is an extract of the Scheduler log:

What I will be doing is to gradually allow Windows Updates to install until / if Backup fails to see if one is a culprit.

Will report back what the logging shows, especially if it fails, which I reckon it will.

This has solved.

What halted it was that WSUS (Windows Server Update Services from the client PC -WHS 2011) had Windows Server 2003 disabled due to its EOL, however there was about 22 updates available and once these were applied the WHS V1 began normal dailies with all the clients. :)

Glad to hear it worked out for you, Windows has been shoving out updates at a pace I have never seen before, my guess is they are trying to get everybody ready for win 10 (Hate to tell them, but I will NOT be using it).

Anyway, good luck and thx for sharing, this board is the best place I have found on the net for info on home servers...

I'll give win 10 a few years and see what happens. I hear they will have an enterprise version that shuts off all the MS spying stuff, hopefully by the time I have to go to it, it will be leaked and usable.

True!

I notice that all the clients on the WHS now tend to back up on a schedule, even though they are powered on during the backup window it isn't unusual for a day or two to go by without running an image over to the WHS.

I am not sure if this is by design or something to do with the network topology here; The WHS 2011 machine now backs up every 2nd day; It doesn't generate any alerts, so I don't mind as there are raw backup snapshots on other machines of the user data every day anyway.

Really agree with you about  "Fear the Cloud" // especially if it starts raining !!

My Daughter has a win 7 64 desktop all-in -one that use to backup everyday, but then she got a play station and plugs it into the extra hdmi input port so the desktop goes into a deep sleep and will not backup for days, when she unplugs the play station and starts using the pc again, it resumes backing up like normal.
It has to be the sleep thing, I check for and download updates weekly.
Goodluck.
I have always wished the server could be set for weekly backups instead of daily. But I just go in on the weekend and set all the backup for trash except for the last two.
It works.
Good luck
P.S. I have 5 desktops with win7 64 / 1 desktop with vista 64/1 laptop with win 10 64 / 4 netbooks with win 7 32 I only backup two of the netbooks as they are all about the same. I have my clients keep all their data on the server so the backups are small and fast. I don't backup the win 10, I keep it on the guest network on a different subnet to keep it from snooping. :-) Just got a Mac book pro which I don't backup....
:offtopic: Microsoft is headed down the wrong road as far as I'm concerned, but I'm sure they could care less what I think.... I will not be updating to win 10 at least for the next few years. I'll see what is next.
