I have an older (non v3.0) MediaSmart and have recently moved to a ... less desirable area.

In case my MediaSmart gets stolen/damaged I want to backup to S3 as that is offsite.

1) Can I recover the files off of S3 w/o my MediaSmart (specifically shared folders that are not user backup files)? I.e. If it is stolen and thus don't have the old box and perhaps I choose to not go buy a new MediaSmart (since they are old) can I get those files back? Or are they stored in some sort of proprietary MediaSmart online locked format.

2) Also how do I estimate Amazon S3 cost? I have about 222GB of shared files and 362GB of PC backups.

1) The files stored in the Shared Folders are not encrypted or stored in a proprietary format, they are just files and you can recover them off S3. The client PC backup database is a proprietary format and you need WHS to read it.

2) http://calculator.s3.amazonaws.com/calc5.html
