So I have a brand new Win7 64 bit laptop waiting for me at home (never used anything above XP before). I also have an MSS and I've got to thinking (always trouble).

I've read in several places that while Win7 64 "works" with WHS v1 apparently doing a restore requires you to download the 32 bit versions of all your drivers and have them on a USB key for the restore. Seems like potential annoyance and frustration.

I've also read about "Windows Anytime upgrade" and how Win7 Professional "can back up to a home or business network.".. well hey, my MSS is a home network!

Assuming I want to make my life as simple as possible should something go wrong in the future - would I be better off anytime-upgrading from Home Premium to Professional (assuming I'm ok with the cost), then doing the built-in Win7 backup to my WHS rather than doing the WHS connector backups, or am I over-analyzing?

I upgraded all my Win7 64 bit Home Premium machines to the Professional version for around $20 each. it was worth it to be able to back up to a network location.

Offhand I don't remember the company but I got the Anytime upgrade keys emailed to me within a few hours.

$20! If you do happen to remember the company I'd love to know, that's an order of magnitude less than I've found so far.

I back up 8 "windows 7 ultimate" PC's to my WHSv1. I have even restored a few desktops and laptops from bare metal.

The first time I did a restore, I had a bit of a mess. Microsoft had supplied bad realtek drivers in their recovery CD.
To fix that, I downloaded the Vista32 Lan Driver pack from http://driverpacks.net. (I actually got it from another WHS site but it was stolen from there and since removed.)
That solved all of my WHS restore issues. I just copied the extracted zip file onto my WHS restore thumbdrive and had no further WS restore issues. I let the "WHS restore disk" scan the new Drivers on the thumbdrive and it finds it.

To answer your other question. The WHSv1 (and i think the v2) Recovery CD's are windows PE (Vista 32) based. so it needs the the Vista 32 drivers.

and your last question, you should beable to upgrade on microsoft.com on the windows 7 home page.

Using Win 7 Backup builtin, I tried to backup to a folder on the server and it would only go to the root, it would not see any folders, Has anybody else had that problem?
