Hello all, is anybody playing with the new RED WD drives yet. I have plenty of Hitachi 2 tb drives, but they do run hot 110 to 120 f.
I just ordered 2 of these new RED drives to see how they work. Shout out if ya like them, I will post what they do for me.

P.S. Don't tell newegg that my buddy bought the second one for me.

Interested to hear your thoughts on. Next drive I get will probably be a red to test out

Assuming prices drop at year end, I plan to buy 8-10 of the 3 TB reds.

Wow, I see the price went up 30 buck, but at least they are letting ya get 3 each now.
So far, I like. The temps are down like 98 degrees, speed wise I haven't had a chance to see what difference if any yet.
I put 2 in the middle and have the non pooled on top.

Hitachi system drive 113 degrees.
Red 98 degrees
Red 98 degrees
Hitachi non pooled 116 degrees

I will wait a while then if no problems will start stocking up.
May do a reset and put one of the reds as system.

Personally I am looking at the RED Drives for consideration for new drives in my current servers WHSv1 and WHS2011 but I am also looking at building a Windows Server Essentials 2012 which can support the larger than 2TB drive sizes which also means fewer drives in the server itself.

What will interest me most is to see what experiences others here share and I also know it will take sometime to see how they actually work out.

My original 485 system drive was not doing so well according to the SMART plugin. Researched here for current HDD favorites, however I couldn't find anyone using a Red drive, but chose a WD Red drive anyway after visiting their site. Many thanks to ymboc's excellent guide for cloning and upgrading. The cloning took about 8 hours. A few coffees later, everything is working and I'm feeling good. SMART had an exclamation point next to the drive but no alarms or problems.
A week later the exclamation point is gone and currently running at 28 degrees, the coolest drive of the 4 in the enclosure. I don't post often but almost everything that I use or try in the ex485 is based on advice or from forum posts here. Thank you to all.

The Anandtech article is a good read, thanks for sharing it. I'll definitely be watching for price drops on these.

A Windows Server Essentials 2012 server is on my radar too to replace my current WHSv1. Windows 8 sounds like an interesting option, but so far the whole remove a drive from the pool (storage spaces) seems to be rather problematic

Just was thinking, I didn't do anything to these drives before putting them in my x510.
Just took them out and shoved them in. I did a little googling and it looks like they might be AF drives.

What will happen if they are AF and I don't fix them??
If needed I have plenty of other drives, so can take them out and do the vodo if needed.

I am ready to train the next generation (my daughter) of server admins and was thinking of letting her do a reset. Maybe now's the time. I'm not getting any younger.

Maybe will try that 24/7 tech support lololoololol that should be good.

I thought (but could be wrong) that nothing needs to be done for the latest WD AF drives I know when they first came out you had to set the jumper or change a setting via software.

So far no problems at all. My daughter streams every evening, she has said nothing.
The egg has the 1TB reds on sale till oct 1 or tenth (I forget) I sent for a couple, it's time to hand down the server to the next gen (daughter) I will have her do a factory reset, use the 1TB red for system and use the 2TB reds as the data builds.
I like the lower temps for sure. Have to do everything I can to keep the server alive till something better comes along.
I still have plenty of the 2TB Hitachi, they run hot but have not lost one yet, but I have to think WD has a winner on these reds...
Good luck all.

Hi All,

My WHS recently crashed and I'm doing a full reinstall with all new drives. Previously I used the WD20EADS drives, but these red drives look interesting (and currently $50 cheaper on Amazon). I'm looking at the WD20EFRX right now. Can these be dropped straight into a virgin server (no hardware mods)?

just be careful with WD as their green drives ignored hdparm and exceeded the maximum rated head parks in a few months.
The partial solution was wdidle3 to modify drive firmware-but it is poor when a drive ignores drive management.
google green drive load count cycle
I'm personally interested as green drives were a disaster for me as were blue drive consumer product.

I have had the best luck of late with the Seagate LP drives, just got another 2TB drive for $94
