I'm Alex Kuretz, and I'm the founder of MediaSmartServer.net. I was the Lead Test and Integration Engineer at HP for the MediaSmart Server until April 2008 when I moved on to other opportunities outside HP. I've kept active in the Windows Home Server community, creating several add-ins and helping users make the most of their Home Servers.

I’m pleased to announce the release of a new version of the Windows Home Server Backup Database-Backup (BDBB) Add-In. Version 1.0.3.3 includes a couple of new features that I believe you will find useful, as well as an updated user interface to accommodate the new features. Here’s a list of what’s changed in this release.

Nick over at ASoft, developer of the popular AdminiMe and AutoExit Add-Ins for Windows Home Server, has released an updated version of his WHS DevKit 2 which is designed to help developers create/build/install Add-Ins for Windows Home Server Vail.
This new version has been updated to support the latest version of Windows Home Server: build 7659. [...]

At the time this article was published, the Microsoft announcement originally called this release RC0. That blog post has since been changed and the Release Candidate wording has been removed. I still believe that this release should not have been given to the general public since it includes known data corruption issues.
Microsoft has today announced [...]

Prices on large capacity hard drives have been dropping steadily and you can now get a 2 terabyte drive to expand your storage for under $100 (and I’m sure that will be dropping even lower before we know it), and at the same time we’re needing to store more and more content in the form [...]

HP has announced the release of two free HP Add-Ins that will be available beginning July 13th for the HP MediaSmart Server and HP Data Vault products. The first is an update to the previously released TiVo Add-In and allows customers to schedule series recordings of their favorite programs and have them automatically copied over [...]

Windows Home Server makes it easy to expand your storage as your needs grow, and when you have filled all the internal drive bays of your server an eSATA storage enclosure is the highest performance and most reliable way to gain more storage. The HP MediaSmart Server EX4xx and DataVault models all have a single [...]

The HDBaseT Alliance is a group of companies including Samsung, Sony, LG, and Valens Semiconductor who have joined forces to develop a solution for delivering high-definition video, audio, ethernet, and high power over standard Cat5e/Cat6 cables. The Alliance has recently announced that the HDBaseT 1.0 specification has been finalized, which means we should see devices [...]

When HP released the Data Vault X310 it was for North America only, and customers around the rest of the world were feeling left out. HP has remedied that by recently releasing to Europe the X311 which is identical to the X310 we have here in the US. You can read my review of the [...]

Though the name might lead you to think otherwise, Windows Home Server is also well suited for the small business and home office environment. The client PC backup software is one of the most compelling features for home users and small businesses alike, and I’ve previously talked about how we use Windows Home Server at [...]

One of the very first things we noticed about the EX490, EX495, and Data Vault X510 was how quiet they are, in large part thanks to the new power supply in these newer models. I determined the manufacturer and model number of the new power supply in my in-depth hardware guide for the new servers, [...]
