Review: Home Server Status v2.01

With having my HP ex490 running just fine at home and being perfectly happy with WHS v1 for some time now I haven’t really paid much attention to the number of addins slowly becoming available for WHS 2011. But having recently picked up a copy of WHS 2011 at a fantastic price I’ve decided to at least set it up on my old frankenserver and take a look at what’s available.

The first one I’m going to look at is Home Server Status v2 which aims to replace some of the old features that have been lost since WHS v1. I have to say that the stock standard “Launchpad” that gets installed on client PCs with WHS 2011 was a little disappointing when I first got to use it a few days ago. There didn’t seem to be a hell of a lot of things I could see and do very quickly with only a few clicks, I mean to kick off a manual backup now takes 4 clicks of the mouse when in WHS v1 it only took 2. And then when the PC is actually performing a backup the only way to know this is to perform another 3 clicks whereas as with WHS v1 you could see your computer was doing a backup just by looking at the connector icon on the windows task bar. Now I know this may seem a bit pedantic but it appears Microsoft have given us something very simple with the idea that developers add more functionality using addins.

And this is where Home Server Status steps in…

Home Server Status brings the Windows Home Server v1 status icon back to Windows Home Server 2011. Choose to be advised of Windows Home Server connection and backup status from the Windows 7 taskbar, or using the Classic WHS v1 system tray icon.

The software needs to be installed on each client rather than just on the server. Its aim is to enhance “status” visibility on the client so I guess this makes sense. Installation was nice and straight forward after downloading it HERE, a 15 day trail is available which will give you a great chance to try it out before you decide to buy.

Setup is pretty straight forward and I suppose it’s worth mentioning that my first assumption was that this would be an “addin” for the Launchpad when in fact it’s a totally separate app to complement the Launchpad and most, if not all, functions can be performed from within Home Server Status plus a few extra cool tricks.

While still in trial mode the notification below does crop up quite a bit which is a bit annoying but acceptable I suppose. $6.95 will get rid of these for you.

To start off with, the app sits down on the task bar but a quick setting tick box changes this so that it now sits nicely with the other tray icons.

A right click on the tray icon and you’re presented with some of the options.

Features at a glace :

  • Kick off a backup nice and quickly
  • Open the home server web page with ease
  • Quickly get to your shared folders
  • Open up the Dashboard
  • Wake your server using WOL
  • Have up to 4 custom web links or shortcuts
  • Easily see the status of your backups

And on top of that when your computer is performing a backup you get a nice visual of how the process is getting along.

Conclusion :
On the whole it’s a great little application that complements your WHS nicely. Personally I don’t see myself installing this on all my computers such as the HTPC and kitchen computer but most definitely would have this loaded up on my main desktop machine for the little things it gives me quick access to.

Head on over HERE more details on this handy piece of software.

Hi there, I'm Tommy and I've been messing around with PCs and electronics since before I can remember. I had been running my own WHS "frankenserver" for a good few years before I picked up an ex490 on super special after HP has discontinued them and that's, in turn, how I found this little community of fellow enthusiasts.

Thank for the kind words and the review. I am glad you liked my little application and I hope it helped make your WHS 2011 experience just a little better.

I have seen others write about this software and its all good. I have yet to install it and one day I will get to it but does it also show the backup status of the other clients when they are being backed up?

No it only shows backup progress for the client it is currently installed on.

I’ve started the switch from my production V1 system to 2011 and I’ve been running this now for the last week. Such a useful app, and nice to see you picked up on areas Microsoft should have included in the product. Great app, and a useful addition. Thankyou!
