Microsoft has announced the release of a public beta of their Windows Phone 7 Add-In that we first saw demonstrated at CES this year. The Add-In provides server management capabilities as well as streaming of music, photos and video, and the ability to upload pictures.

The Add-In consists of two parts, a Windows Phone app available from the Marketplace and a server Add-In that delivers the infrastructure needed by the mobile app. The mobile application is only available for Windows Phone, however the server infrastructure provided by the Add-In is supposed to be open and flexible enough to allow development of a compatible application for the iPhone/iPad and Android platforms. It will be interesting to see if the community takes on the challenge of producing these mobile apps for the other platforms.

  • Details on the Add-In for Windows Home Server 2011
  • Details on the Add-In for Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials

If you have a Windows Phone and are running WHS 2011 or SBS 2011 Essentials, give the Add-In a try and let us know what you think.
