Xtreamer PVR Announced

I was doing some reading on Engadget and saw a post related to the just announced Xtreamer PVR. Xtreamer is really looking to make a splash in 2011, as this is the third “significant” product announcement they have made in the past few months. First they announced the Xtreamer Ultra, an Xtreamer branded HTPC running Intel Atom/Ion. Next up was the Xtreamer Prodigy, which is the follow up to their current Realtek Media Players, this time running the latest Realtek RTL 1185 chip. Now announced is the Xtreamer PVR, which will be running on the Sigma SMP8656. An interesting twist is that the Operating System will be Android Froyo 2.2 and it will support Dual Tuners. There is little information otherwise so it is hard to make any sort of judgment about what exactly the Xtreamer PVR will be capable of. It is great to see such a diverse lineup being announced. However, my biggest concern is that Xtreamer may not have enough resources to properly handle multiple Operating Systems/chips, especially if they are all released around the same time. Most manufacturers struggle with new products at launch (anyone who has owned a media player at launch knows they effectively have become an unpaid beta tester), so the ability of Xtreamer to release a stable product at launch and then properly support will be key to success. I guess only time will tell, but hopefully these players will start trickling into the hands of reviewers soon so we can start seeing if the players live up to the hype.

I agree with you about resources, and there’s Xtreamer’s history of hype and underdelivery. Right now, they need a resource to check typos, as in fixing “Comming soon” ;).

Also odd that the PVR isn’t on their official site yet.

They must believe that “comming” is spelled correct, as that is what it shows on their Netflix link on the Xtreamer Pro.

It is odd they haven’t “officially” announced even though it is their product PDF (there is also an additional NAS type player showing up there as well)

So this includes a tuner and is called a PVR, so does this mean its going to allow one to DVR OTA HD television? What is it going to use for guide data?

Seems like they would be the first to enter this market as I think the Dish DTVPal DVR which never came to was the first to offer a TV guide and DVR for OTA.

Honestly it is not entirely clear as there is very little detail. I don’t know if the tuner will only apply for the European tuners (I think it is something like DTV-B), as right now I think most media players that have tuners are targeted to the European markets

This is false information and probably a (very badly) doctored graphic. What you have here is the Xtreamer Prodigy which uses the latest Realtek chip, Realtek 1186 750 MHz, not a Sigma!

The Xtreamer range is fantastic at what it does and plays all my media beautifully!

What is false information? First this was taken directly from Xtreamer’s website (so they doctored their own advertisement)??? Second, Xtreamer announced that they are looking at Sigma players to go alongside their Realtek players? Also, I understand it looks like the prodigy but who says they cannot use the same chassis. There is nothing in this post that is false, simply reporting what “Xtreamer” posted themselves ;)
