Guide: Setting Up Zappiti For the Dune

While I was doing research for my review of the Dune BD Prime I came across Zappiti, a Video Jukebox similar to YAMJ for the PCH. Just about every media player out there has a substandard stock UI, so for me finding a suitable 3rd party jukebox is a must. Is Zappiti that jukebox for the Dune? Well, let’s dig in and see what it has to offer.

My Setup:

  • WHS with all videos stored and streamed (Blu Rays, SD DVDs, and TV Shows) shared via samba (see my guide on setting up samba for WHS here)
  • Wired home network (Cate5e/Cat6)
  • Dune BD Prime connected via Cat5e to home network

Files To Download:

1. Install Zappiti and Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 (if applicable). I decided to install Zappiti on my Windows 7 x32 PC, but confirmed it worked on my Windows 7 x64 PC as well

Setting Up:

Before talking about setting up I just wanted to briefly discuss library organization:

  • Movies – individual movie files can be in one big folder or they can be in subfolders (Separate folder for each movie and my preferred method). The key is to make sure the filename of the movie and/or the foldername of the movie is named as accurately as possible to the actual movie name.  Words must be separated by spaces
  • TV Shows – each TV show must be in its own folder, with the folder being the exact name of the TV show. Within each TV Show folder you can have separate folders for each Season (folder name should be “Season 1″, “Season 2″, etc…) or just have all episodes in the main tv show folder. Each episode ideally should be named ShowName s## e## (where S = Season and E = Episode). I prefer to have a folder for each season, so an example of my setup would be: TV Shows -> Supernatural -> Season 1 -> Supernatural S01E01.mkv, Supernatural S01E02.mkv, etc…
  • Movies and TV Shows should be kept in separate folders. For example, I have a “TV Shows” folder and a “Movies” folder under my main “Videos” folder.

Alright, now on to setting up. Locate Zappiti (should be a shortcut on your desktop) and launch. After a few seconds the main menu should load. Along the top left of the menu are the various configuration options. Along the top right of the menu is a counter which shows how many movies and TV shows are part of your Zappiti library. In the middle of the main menu are five large icons. You can select each icon to navigate through your Zappiti library. This is exactly what it will look like when you access on a Dune.

1. Configure:

Click on the “Configure” button and a Configuration Popup Menu should appear. The “Configuration Folder” will be where Zappiti will store the generated Zappiti database (I think SQLlite).Unless you want this stored in a specific location I would just keep it set to the default location.

Under Language choose your language of choice (German, English, French, Italian, Dutch, Polish, or Russian)

When Zappiti is done creating the video jukebox it will export the files which the Dune will then access for viewing. The Share Path is where you want the Zappiti output to be sent to. It must be a folder that the Dune can access. In my case I just made a “Zappiti” folder on my shared Videos folder on my WHS.

Next up is telling Zappiti where your Movie and TV Show collection is located. For movies Select “New Movies folder” and for TV shows select “New TVShows folder”. The folder path is where your Movies/TV Shows are located. Next up is possibly the most confusing part and where most people have problems. You need to specify the “Rewrite absolute path when exporting”. This will tell Zappiti how the Dune will play back the video files. For example, if you access your media on the Dune via samba you would specify here what the samba path would be. When you click on the dropdown you will see a list of examples of different paths you could choose dependent on your setup (although the examples or helpful it is actually confusing because the user may think you simply choose one of the examples instead of actually filling in your own information).

Since I am using samba, my paths are as follows:

Folder Path – \\SHAWSHANK\Videos\Movies Family HD

Absolute Path – smb://SHAWSHANK/Videos/Movies Family HD (NOTE the “/” goes in  the opposite direction as in the Folder Path.

Once done you can see below what my configuration looks like.

I only play back my media via samba to the Dune, but I know many other people have different setups (such as external drives connected directly to the Dune, internal hard drive, etc…). Since I didn’t test any other setups I can’t provide much guidance, but if users want to list out examples of how they set up for different scenarios in the comments section I would be glad to add here.

2. Scan:

Once the configuration is complete the next step is to have Zappiti scan your video library. From what I can tell this is a two step process. First, Zappiti will will scan through each video file and look for local metadata to use. If metadata is missing then Zappiti will put the video file into the “# to scrap” section so the metadata can be scraped from various sources. For movies it appears that Zappiti will use the following local metadata:

  • Cover = folder.jpg
  • Fanart = backdrop.jpg
  • Metadata = [filename] or [moviename].nfo

I have tried various different configurations for TV shows but have been unable to figure out what/if Zappiti will use local metadata.

Any video files that may have been added previously but since have been deleted/moved will appear in the “# to clean up” section. In the screenshot below you can see that once my scan was complete 24 Movies were added (upper right corner) and 2 movies needed to be scraped.

3. # to Scrap:

First off, in case you were wondering, this should say “Scrape” and not “Scrap”. Hopefully the developers will fix this misspelling because the last thing we want to do is scrap our video library!!! If you have 0 to scrape then you can skip this step. Otherwise, click the “# to scrap” button which will show you a list of all videos that need to be scraped.

Once the list appears you can decide to scrape each movie individually or scrape all movies in the list. To scrape a movie/TV show individually simply highlight on the list. At the bottom left the file name will appear, and this is what Zappiti will use to scrape. You can change this field if needed. For example, if you want 100% accuracy you can actually enter in the IMDB #.

If Zappiti is not sure of an exact match of the movie/TV show a list will appear with all possible matches for you to choose from.

4. # to Clean up

If you create a Zappiti database but later on delete any videos from your collection, when you run the scan any removed videos will appears in the “# to clean up” section. Click on the button and a list will appear showing all missing videos. Select “clean up” and Zappiti will remove these files from its database.

5. Export to Dune

The final step ( I will talk about reviewing/editing the Zappiti database shortly) will be to export the Zappiti database files for  the Dune to access. Click the “Export to Dune” button and all files when be exported to the Share Path folder that was set up in the Configuration step.

6. Accessing on the Dune:

You are going to want to add a Zappiti shortcut to your Dune Main Menu to easily access the Zappiti jukebox (to create a shortcut you must be using Dune firmware 100706_1032_beta). To do this you will need to have system storage set up on your Dune. The easiest way to do this is to attach a USB Thumb drive to your Dune (keep in mind the thumb drive must remain connected to the Dune, so make sure you use a thumb drive that you will not need elsewhere). Download the System Storage Utilities from here and copy over to a shared folder that you can access on the Dune. With the USB thumb drive connected to the Dune, navigate to the System Storage Utilities files via the Dune and execute the “dune_service_init_system_storage.dsf” file. Once done you should now have system storage set up.

To create the shortcut, navigate to the folder where you exported your Zappiti jukebox to from the Dune in the file browser, press MENU, choose “Add to main screen” in the popup menu. You should now have Zappiti as a shortcut on your Main Menu.

Viewing/Editing Your Jukebox:

One of the nice things about Zappiti is that you can navigate through the jukebox on your PC exactly as how you would do so with the Dune. This will give you a feel for how  the jukebox works and allow you to edit any details without having to run back and forth between your Dune and your PC. Keep in mind that the views you see on your PC will be the same on your Dune, but all Editing/Scraping is done from the PC and not the Dune.

Let’s take a look at some of the various options available with Zappiti:

Main Menu:

There are five icons on the main menu. They are (from left to right):

  • All My Files – this will show you your entire collection (movies and tv shows). You can view all, or by letter/number.
  • Movies – this will show all videos marked as movies
  • TV Shows – this will show all videos marked as TV shows
  • Recent – this will show recently added videos
  • Categories – this will show videos filtered by category (i.e. Comedy, Horror, etc…)

1. All My Files:

Nothing fancy here, just a simple wall view where you can select “All”, by letter, or by number

2. Movies:

A nice wall view showing coverart for each movie. If you right click on a movie you will have the option to change the coverart as well as change the movie details.  Otherwise, selecting a movie will take you into the movie details screen.

Below is a screenshot of the movie detail page. At this point you can edit the movies details, rescrape the movie, or change the covers/fanart (all from the op toolbar). The one drawback I noticed is that nfos Zappiti is using I created with YANFOE (for YAMJ). The media info that Zappiti uses YANFOE does not store (you only see “mkv” but you don’t see other details such as Aspect Ratio, Resolution, Audio/Video Codec, etc…). To fix this you can either edit the details manually or rescrape details which Zappiti will overwrite the current information. KEEP IN MIND THAT ANY EDITS ONLY HAPPEN TO THE ZAPPITI DATABASE (I.E. THE NFO IF APPLICABLE IS NOT EDITED), SO IF YOU DELETE THE ZAPPITI DATABASE YOU WILL LOSE ANY CUSTOMIZATIONS MADE.

Selecting “Scrap pictures” Zappiti will go online and pull in all cover/fanart. You can then choose which pictures you want to use (based on file dimensions Zappiti will determine whether it is coverart or fanart)

Clicking on “Edit” will bring up a popup will all the movie details that can be edited manually (as mentioned already, you are editing the Zappiti database and not the local nfo if present)

Clicking on “Scrap details” will bring up  a list of all possible matches for the movie, simply select the one that corresponds with the movie in question.

After re-scraping the movie and changing the artwork, below is the final result (notice the full Media Info)

3. Tv Shows

The TV Show layout is essentially the same as Movies except you will drill down to the season and episode level.

Thumbnails of each episode for a given TV Show season.

Detailed information of selected TV Show.

4. Recent

Nothing fancy here, just a wall view showing any recently added TV shows/movies. I am not sure how recent is considered recent by Zappiti?

5. Categories

There is an icon for each category which will filter out your video collection.

You can replace the icons as well as create new categories. Below is a screenshot of a customized categories page created by MPCClub user peterbus.

  • There appears to be a bug where if you delete a TV show from Zappiti the cover still shows
  • Zappiti will only automatically scan your library when you first open the program. If you add new videos you must click the Scan button and the Export to Dune button
  • As usual I stumbled onto a bug that had me pulling out my hair for a good 5-6 hours before I isolated. It turns out that if you have a “tvshow.nfo” file present in your TV shows folders (I believe XBMC scrapers create this nfo) then Zappiti will not properly scrape your TV shows. Once I deleted the nfo everything worked fine (however, I still had to manually delete the Zappiti database first)
  • The primary language base for Zappiti is French. There is an “official” English forum on MPCClub which is very helpful. However, it is unclear if the Zappiti developers monitor the forum to address bugs/feature requests.
  • For any home movies you can probably let Zappiti scrape incorrectly and then just manually change all the information/art/

Final Thoughts:

Overall I am a big fan of Zappiti as it was very easy to set up and has a nice look/feel to it. For anyone using a Dune, I would highly recommend at least testing out (especially if you have TV shows). A few changes I would like to see made in the future:

  • Fix “scrap” to “scrape”
  • Work with metadata developers (possibly YANFOE, EMM, etc…) to create compatible local metadata/art
  • If there is a change to any of the local metadata/art Zappiti should update as well. Currently, if you make a change to a local nfo, you have to delete the movie and rescan (YAMJ has a feature where if there is a change to the file it will rescan)
  • Add option for alternative views (i.e. List)

As of February 1 2011 in order to use the Dune Export functionality of Zappiti you will need to provide proof of your Dune purchase. If you happened to purchased the Dune in France from a non French authorized reseller you will be locked out of this feature. If you don’t have a copy of your invoice it is still not clear if t here is a work around. You can read more about it here.

Hi, my name is Damian, and I'm tech gadget addict! Although I always had some interest in technology, it wasn't until I got my EX470 and more importantly found, that my interest became an addiction. My goal, aside from world domination and to see the Mets/Broncos win another championship, is to set up the perfect digital home where all my media is available at the click of a button. When I am not writing for you can find me over at my blog at or follow me on twitter

Brajesh August 13, 2010 at 1:36 pm

Wonderfully written Damian, thanks! Invaluable since ‘how to use’ info in English is spread across various posts in various thread in various forums. I need to find out if there’s a way to change the red curtain backdrop; nice to know the category icons can be changed. Overall, looks like a very nice movie+TV jukebox, and significantly easier than using YAMJ+Aeon+YANFOE on the PCH C-200, which I now have. I’m finally caving in and ordering the Dune shortly to try out. Will see if I end up keeping it and getting rid of the C-200. The C-200 does have its plusses: cheaper, MKV chapter support (which I’d miss), more web apps, more customization, and a more active user community, but the Dune has its own plusses as well, especially with this movie/TV jukebox.

Damian August 13, 2010 at 3:41 pm

@ Brajesh,

Great, look forward to hearing your thoughts on the C-200 vs. Dune. The Dune really is a solid player, and the main weaknesses (online content, music, and photo playback) are pretty much universal among media players right now. I am a little concerned with the PCHs only because it seems like Syabas has been taking a beating (in particular because of the Popbox)

Please help me I don’t know what to do. I downloaded Zappiti-v1.4.1.2645 and .NET Framework 3.5 on my PC. I have the Zappiti icon on my desktop but… it doesn’t open. I tried to uninstall everything and install it again but nothing.
The funny thing is that it was working at first, I scraped and made a list and corrections on my movies list (avi and mkv) changed photos and so on. Then I had to download the newest iTunes and Qtime software and then suddenly the zappiti stopped working. At all! I click and click but… nothing.
As I told you afterwards I tried to uninstall and install again but…
Please help me.

Thank you in advance

Trey August 13, 2010 at 3:41 pm

Thank you!!!

Everything went great right up to “Export to Dune”. When I push that button, NOTHING HAPPENS! Please help – I really want to show this off to the wife and friends tonight! Thanks again for all your help and advice.

Damian August 13, 2010 at 3:47 pm

Can you confirm the folder path where you have the Dune exporting to?

Trey August 13, 2010 at 3:56 pm

The share path is \\HP-MEDIATANK\Videos\Zappiti

Could it have something to do with write access to the folder?? I set up SMB per your instructions and can play all the movies fine on the Dune

Damian August 13, 2010 at 4:05 pm

Try this for now, change your share path to a folder on your PC. See if the Dune will Export to that. If so let it export, and then cut that folder over to your MSS

Trey August 13, 2010 at 4:13 pm

OK that worked!!

So now what do I do on the Dune?? Add a new folder like I did for my movies on the Dune? Anything else?

You’re the best! I never would have gotten all this done without your help!

Damian August 13, 2010 at 4:15 pm

@ Trey,

Do you have system storage set up? If you do you can create a shortcut on your Dune Home Page. If not then you will just have to browse to the Zappiti folder from your Network Share on the Dune

Trey August 13, 2010 at 4:24 pm

I haven’t set up System Storage yet. But when I browse to the Zappiti folder on the WHS I get a bunch of folders with numbers then Hex code in them. No pretty dashboard…

Damian August 13, 2010 at 4:54 pm

There should be two Zappiti folders created, did you try going into both of them?

Trey August 13, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Yes. I went into both. Just a bunch of folders in each. There are some assorted JPG files and others. What should I be looking for? What is the file name and type?

Damian August 13, 2010 at 5:49 pm

I just tested on my Dune, I have a “Zappiti” folder that I exported my Dune to. In that folder I have two folders, “_Zappiti” and “Zappiti Resources”. I click on “_Zappiti” and that takes me to the jukebox

Brajesh August 13, 2010 at 4:47 pm

Is system storage a USB stick or internal HDD? Can it be either?

Damian August 13, 2010 at 4:55 pm

Can be either, the one thing I am not sure is if you make the internal drive system storage can you still use it to store movies. I will have to dig around (I use a 4GB usb stick)

Simon August 13, 2010 at 8:33 pm

Thanks for taking the time to write this up.

Typo? – I think you refer to ‘Yappiti’ instead of ‘Zappiti’ at one point …. :-)

I originally did the same of you – published the Zappiti conent to my NAS, but now I’ve put a USB memory stick into the Dune (which the Dune publishes as an SMB share to the network) and write the Zappiti output to it. This means that I can turn on the Dune and browse the Zappiti content without the NAS waking up until I actually play a movie.

Damian August 14, 2010 at 6:46 am

Fixed the typo, thanks :-)

Scott Foster August 13, 2010 at 9:30 pm

Another great review. I have been using Zappiti with my Dune and I think it is an excellent program that with a small amount of work would be almost perfect.

Scott Foster August 13, 2010 at 9:38 pm

One other thing though. I tried MyMovies after I installed Zappiti on my WHS. I didn’t like MyMovies and after removing it Zappiti does not function any more. I get the “URL failed to open message” when I go to play a movie. I have uninstalled/reinstalled Zappiti deleting everything possible and no matter what when I get into the movie wall and go to play anything I get the URL message.

I have triple check my config in Zappiti and the info button shows the correct path. I am wondering if I have to reinitialize my Dune somehow to get this to work again. The standard Dune functions work fine, I just can’t get Zappiti functioning again. I am totally frustrated with it.

Damian August 14, 2010 at 6:42 am

Scott – are you using the latest beta fw? Also, I think you wrote on AVSForum? If so, did you try deleting the Zappiti folder in your UserData as well as uninstalling Zappiti before you reinstalled?

Scott Foster August 14, 2010 at 8:55 am

Yes I deleted the database (stored in documents area), everything I could find. I uninstalled it and deleted the database, reinstalled. The rewrite path looks correct and I had not changed anything. I was after I uninstalled MyMovies that Zappiti ceased to work. The Dune and Zappiti brings up the movie wall but when I go to play it I get the invalid URL message. I don’t know what to do. Could there be something on the Dune hard drive?

Also I had previously installed the latest firmware.

Damian August 14, 2010 at 9:55 am

How are you connecting via smb? Maybe try deleting your Zappiti shortcut on your Dune and redo it?

Scott Foster August 14, 2010 at 11:09 am

I had not created the shortcut yet for Zappiti. I navigate via the network browser until I got to the _Zappiti folder on the WHS. When I select that my movie wall appears and everything is fine until I actually try and play it. That is when I get the URL error. I went through this once before and had it working perfectly until I got a hair up my butt to try MyMovies. Big Friggin Mistake.

I am going to install Zappiti on my HTPC running Win 7 and see if I can get it to work there. If I can then that means I have an issue with the WHS.

BABACHAN August 14, 2010 at 12:23 pm

Could you give us the exact message together with your media library structure? Maybe we can deduct something from it.

Did you check your movies directories? Maybe MyMovies placed dune_folder.txt files in there. Or .nfo files which confuse Zappiti.

Cartaphilus August 14, 2010 at 1:48 am

I used your instructions to setup Zappiti with my Dune 3.0 Base and Synology NAS. After the export things aren’t completely working. I get the main menu, but once I enter the movies library the pictures are overlapping each other and a strange text/code is printed on each picture. When I select one of the movies I don’t get the movie details, but a blue Dune screen with a file.

BABACHAN August 14, 2010 at 3:31 am

Do you have the latest firmware installed on your dune? I believe some of the Zappiti features need ate least firmware 100413_1555.

Cartaphilus August 14, 2010 at 8:28 am

Thank you Babachan! You cured my headache. 1555 firmware did the trick.

Bill August 14, 2010 at 2:49 pm

Great write up, was able to set-up everything the first time. Looking foward to reading how to add a Zappiti shortcut to my Dune Main Menu so I can access the Zappiti jukebox.

Damian August 14, 2010 at 2:54 pm

Great to hear you got everything working. Do you have system storage on your Dune (you will need it for the shortcut?

Trey August 14, 2010 at 4:42 pm

I still cannot get Zappiti to open on the Dune. I am running the latest Beta firmware..

I don’t get a movie wall at all. When I open the _Zappiti folder all I see are the sub folders 0,1,2, etc….

What am I doing wrong? This is very frustrating. I want my wife to be happy with my expensive new toy, but until I get Zappiti working, I don’t think that’s possible.

Thanks for the help

BABACHAN August 15, 2010 at 12:55 am

I saw from your previous posts that you had problems exporting on the WHS. And now the problems are with displaying. I assume that the files are still on the WHS? Sounds to me like a problem with the right permisions. I would advise to set it up on a USB stick first to see if it works. Just stick one in the Dune and export to a folder or root on the stick.
Also post your problem to the forum on MPCClub: There you have a lot of people who want to help.

Trey August 15, 2010 at 9:08 am

Ok. Exporting to a USB stick connected to the Dune got the Zappiti UI to work. (the movies wouldn’t play b/c they are on my WHS)

I set up System Storage on the Dune as well using a 4GB USB stick.

So now I guess i need to setup a Zappiti shortcut on the Dune system storage? Anything else I need to do?

Damian August 15, 2010 at 9:11 am

Something must be off on your WHS configuration of SMB which is odd if you followed my setup. Yes, you can just create a shortcut to Zappiti on your main menu and you should be set

Trey August 15, 2010 at 9:38 am

Ok. I got the Zappiti to export to the WHS and have setup a shortcut on the Dune’s home screen. But I think I am having the same problem that Scott Foster is having.

I can select a movie and get the info screen, but when I hit enter or play I get a URL error saying that

“Error getting file information”
Path: _Zappiti/02/008…..
Error: No such file or Directory

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Bill August 14, 2010 at 6:22 pm

Yes, I’m using system storage for BD-Live content.

BABACHAN August 15, 2010 at 1:31 am

See this post (point 4) how to set up Zappiti shortcut on main menu:

Bill August 17, 2010 at 9:48 pm

I’m following the instructions based on the above post.

I have system storage (on a 2gb internal HD)

I’ve loaded the Dune firmware 100706_1032_beta software and not sure what to do next.

I can’t find the “file browser”, so I can add the Zappiti icon to the Dune’s main menu.

Right now my set-up is just 1 2gb internal HD and 1 2gb external HD. I’m not using a media server for my file storage.

Thanks in advance for help with this.

Damian August 15, 2010 at 2:55 pm

@ Trey,

Can you confirm again what your share path settings are in the configure section of Zappiti. Also, you are using beta FW 1032, correct, or are you using the last stable fw 1555?

Trey August 16, 2010 at 6:34 am

Yes, I am using the latest beta 1032.

I found an error in the share paths (I forgot to put the smb:) but even after correcting that and exporting to the Dune once again, I still get the error above (URL error)

This is very frustrating and I appreciate everyone’s help.

Trey August 16, 2010 at 12:40 pm

Do I need the User name and PW for the SMB absolute path? I didn’t see it in yours (or the smb:)

e.g. \\HP-MEDIATANK\Movies
absolute path: smb://dune:dune@HP-MEDIATANK/Movies

Currently I am using just:

Thanks again!

Damian August 16, 2010 at 2:14 pm

@ Trey,

Since I have the guest accounts enabled I don’t need to enter in the username/password. My paths look like the below

Craig August 15, 2010 at 6:50 pm

Good write up on the Dune and thanx for the Zappiti instructions. I have a Netgear EVA9150 but unfortunately the fw hasn’t kept up with competitors. I am thinking of buying a Dune. Is there a way to include home videos without having some 50+ short home videos (wife goes crazy with the iPhone) in between all the cover art for movies?

Damian August 16, 2010 at 6:14 am

@ Craig,

Yes, there is a feature where you can group multiple videos together so on the main movie wall only one icon will show. The way to do in the movie wall you will have to right click on each home video and there will be a “Group” option. Simply assign all home videos to the same group and then you will only see one cover on the movie wall for all your home videos (the cover will have a small red “G” in the bottom right corner to let you know there are multiple videos behind it)

Jason August 16, 2010 at 1:41 pm

Is there any way to configure Zappiti (or YAMJ for that matter) with multiple views or an alternate view?

My wife apparently doesn’t like the cover browse views because it’s hard for her to see which movie it is from across the room on our smaller bedroom TV.

Damian August 16, 2010 at 2:20 pm

With Zappiti I think it is just wall view (Same goes for MyMovies and yaDIS). For YAMJ there is a way to configure to list view but I have never tried

Andre August 18, 2010 at 1:57 pm

I notice you have a Family HD Movie folder, does Zappiti mix these movies in with your other movies?

Damian August 18, 2010 at 2:03 pm

Yes, they get all grouped in as “Movies”

Bill August 18, 2010 at 9:57 pm

Now have another question. When I select the Zappiti on Dune’s Main Screen, go into the Movie folder and select a Movie, I get the following error message.

“Path: _Zappiti/02/00-…ee954cc87b3f/launcher”

“Error: No Such File or Directory”

Again I have an internal HD (inside the Dune) and an external HD attached to the Dune through one of the usb ports. This is how I set-up Zappiti:

\\DUNE\DuneHDD_5d3bfba7_b7a4_4930_a1ae_754b0129ebe e\Moive

\\DUNE\Elements_7ca0c9f8c42\TV Shows
//DUNE/Elements_7ca0c9f8c42/TV Shows

My Share path is C:\Users\Public\Videos\Zappiti

My Configuration folder is C:\Users\bill\AppData\Local\Zappiti

For the Movie and TV Shows, I just gave the name of the path that I see when I’m looking at the Dune thorugh the network on my PC.

Again, thanks in advance for your help on this

Damian August 24, 2010 at 7:15 am

Hey Bill,

Did you have any luck getting set up, I think I saw you posted on MPCClub as well. Thanks

Bill August 24, 2010 at 10:22 am

Yes I sure did. Everything is running great. I have my system storage and Zappiti running on my internal (Dune) HDD. Now comes the fun part, ripping about 300 movies/TV shows. Thanks again for your help on this.

Damian August 24, 2010 at 10:37 am

Great to hear. Let me know if you have any other questions, I have several ripping guides floating around here that may help. Most importantly, make sure you actually enjoy your Dune and watch some movies!!!

Joop August 22, 2010 at 2:43 pm

What name convention do I use to get (downloaded) DVD’s of series recognized by Zappiti? Usually there are 4 epiodes on a DVD. The format is sometimes iso and sometimes Video-TS.

Another question: my connection met the Dune (with) internal HD is fine (using SMB); what should I use as export folders? Local on my PC and access by sharing them to Dune or export the information to the Dune HD? And, if the latter… what is the way to keep it up to date?

Thanks, in advance, for any help and Damian, my compliments for a great howto.

Damian August 23, 2010 at 8:51 am

I cannot 100% confirm since all my tv show boxsets I rip into individual episodes. There has been talk on the MPCClub forum regarding, someone posted an example as such:

– HDD1
—– Series
——– Band Of Brothers
———– Band Of Brothers S00E01.iso <– extras
———– Band Of Brothers S01E01.S01E02.iso <– episodes 1 and 2
———– Band Of Brothers S01E03.S01E04.iso <– episodes 3 and 4
———– |
———– Band Of Brothers S01E09.S01E10.iso <– episodes 9 and 10

As far as where to access your Zappiti jukebox really up to you. I like to keep the export at the same location as where my movies are stored. If you keep the export location on your PC you will be forced to keep your PC on whenever you navigate the Zappiti jukebox, is this what you want to do?

Brajesh August 23, 2010 at 8:06 am

Are you going to be adding instructions on creating a Zappiti shortcut to the Dune Main Menu to easily access the Zappiti jukebox?

Brajesh August 23, 2010 at 8:08 am

I see BABACHAN posted on how to do this above.

Damian August 23, 2010 at 8:19 am

I actually was in the process of adding when you commented. The guide has been updated.

Joop August 23, 2010 at 9:22 am

Thanks Damian for your quick and informative respons.

I will try the naming convention and give feed back on how it works.

About the Zappiti jukebox’s location: my amount of video seriously exceeds the half gig in my Dune box. So it seems the PC is going to be the storage location. Is it possible, BTW, to have Zappiti to manage more than one jukebox? E.g. one with current stuff and one for archived video? If so, could you give an example of what I need to do on the PC and what on the Dune to make it al work (together)?

Thanks in advance!

Damian August 23, 2010 at 9:32 am

I know some people will have the Zappiti jukebox exported to a dedicated Thumb Drive attached to their Dune. This allows you to browse the jukebox without having the machine where the media files are stored needing to be on (of course though that machine will need to be on to actually play back).

I don’t think you can manage multiple Zappiti jukeboxes on the same PC. I just remoted and there isn’t an option to create a new Zappiti jukebox. You could install Zappiti on separate PCs and then each PC would create its own jukebox, but that is probably not what you had in mind.

Joop August 24, 2010 at 7:43 am

The movie wall is on the Dune and works well. But… when I select a movie, I get the URL message saying Failed to open URL. When I select the movie directly it plays well.

I have the latest firmware installed on the Dune and the latest release of Zappiti.

Any Ideas? Thanks in advance.

Damian August 24, 2010 at 8:57 am

It sounds like your absolute path is incorrect. Can you confirm how you set up your paths?

Joop August 24, 2010 at 9:06 am

Hi Damian, thanks for your prompt respons.

I use a numer of paths, but the structure is the same:
C:\Users\Joop\Videos\Movies HD
smb://Users/Joop/Videos/Movies HD

I tried deinstalling it all (and throwing away the databbase), but no succes.

Jason August 24, 2010 at 9:11 am

Your pathing is wrong, that’s the only explanation for the problem you are having.

Re-check for typos, invalid path names, etc.

Shree August 24, 2010 at 9:14 am

I am getting double/triple/quad entries for each of the Episodes in a TV Series.

All Series stored NAS\Video\TV Shows\Ben 10\Season 1\S01E01 etc.

I am able to see all the episodes, but I see a lot of them! Cannot understand the error.

I have a ReadyNAS Pro, Dune Base 3.0, Win 7 64x.

Please note I can play the material w/o problems, so long as I use the Dune default view.

When scraping TV shows, if you have two shows with the same name, I am not presented with an option to pick the right name, like it happens for the movie. Can you also please comment?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thx again for a cool software!!!

Damian August 24, 2010 at 11:16 am

Issue 1 – the only thing I can think of is that you have multiple files of the same name. For example, do you have multiple S01E01 files in a TV show folder (maybe different extensions)?

Issue 2 – What shows have the same name?

Shree August 24, 2010 at 12:52 pm

Thx for the note Damian.

1. Just checked the folders … and no I only have one file per episode. Almost all of them avi. So now I am completely baffled.

But I did see a bug report on the Zappiti site (#180) that this may occur if “the connection is not correct”. I have no idea what this means. Hopefully, the development team will look at this some time and have an answer.

2. A show from BBC Merlin and a kids show (with a black dog) also has the same name. You can check-out the TVdb site and you can see it there.

Thx for looking and reponding to my post. I just wish I could get this to work right for my TV Series. Then I will be ready to load the whole thing on the Dune and start enjoying the features the software offers.

Damian August 24, 2010 at 1:02 pm

1. Man that has me stumped, no clue what “the connection is not correct” means???

2. I don’t see Merlins with the same name. I see a “Merlin The Magical Puppy” and Merlin (2008) (I assume this is the BBC one). Is this what you are talking about? If so change the tv show names to match exactly what TVDB shows. Let me know what you think

Shree August 25, 2010 at 1:01 am

1. That was my question as well .. takes me back to my days of programming and bizzare error msgs!!! I have not idea what “the connect was not correct” means either. Maybe given your experience, if you read the error report 180 that might mean something to you.

2. I will change the TV Series Name and have it re-scan tonight.

Also, I am thinking that I will uninstall the Zappiti completely and reinstall and rescan the library and see if that helps.

What bothers me about this whole things is I cannot see a pattern for the duplicates and here is why:
1. No Duplications in my Movies folder
2. Not all Shows show duplication — only some
3. To further complicate matters — some episodes are repated 2 or 3 or 4 times!!! That is really bizzare!
NOTE: I have check all the files and there are no duplicate files with different extensions!

As to uninstalling and clearng my PC of all Zappiti files .. are there any hidden registery entries OR hidden files that I need to know about? And if yes, how will I delete them?

Sorry Damian, I am not imagining this either :-)

TIA for your paitence and engagement …

Joop August 24, 2010 at 9:15 am

Hi Jason,

I checked and, as you may have seen in my previous post, I use multiple paths. Could you please telle me what’s wrong with the one I used in the previous post?

I am on windows 7 64bit, and all other things (network, Dune etc.) seems to be working fine.

Damian August 24, 2010 at 11:00 am

Possibly it is a setting in W7 that is causing the issue? I use WHS so I never tested out with W7. Also, try testing with just one path to see if we can narrow down the issue

Joop August 24, 2010 at 4:23 pm

Stupid me. Check, recheck and check again.

It was indeed a typo in the path; found it out by moving some films to a different disc.

My next (and I hope last) problem now is to play (through Zappiti) an episode of a TV show. Example: I have:
La Femme Nikita
/Season 1
/La Femme Nikita S01E01.S01E02.S01E03.S01E04

This plays well when I select it on the Dune directly, but nothing happens when I select it through Zappiti. I get the box cover, the seasons overview and the details of season 1, episode 1 (etc.). But then it won’t start when I press enter.

Thanks Damian and Jason for all your help on the previous subjects and in advance for helping me out with this last lack of my understanding of the Dune world.

Damian August 25, 2010 at 8:27 am

To be honest I am not sure the best way to set up. Maybe try throwing into ISO, so you would have La Femme Nikita S01E01.S01E02.S01E03.S01E04.iso and see if that work better. Since I just rip to individual episodes I haven’t really had to deal with this.

Adam August 24, 2010 at 11:55 pm

I don’t understand how to setup two seperate hard drives with Zappiti. I have been able to setup the first drive on the pc without issue, drive J:\Media but cannot setup K:\Media. I am using SMB share. Who can give me really simple step by step instructions?

I currently have it setup as follows:
Sharepath – J:\Media
Movie folder – J:\Media\Bluray
Tvshow – J:\Media\Tv Series

If I try to add movie or tv show folders from drive K:\ it doesn’t like it because of the sharepath (which makes sense) but I don’t know what else to change it to.

I don’t have a write absolute path because it didn’t work for me and it works fine so far without one. I am using windows 7 and latest stable firmware.

Damian August 25, 2010 at 8:47 am

Hi Adam,

So to clarify, you have media spread out across several drives (K: and J:) and in Zappiti you cannot setup K:, or is it it won’t play on the Dune from Zappiti?

Also, you mention about the absolute path, you never set up?

Adam August 25, 2010 at 7:19 pm

Yes, media spread across multiple drives.
Cannot setup with K:\
Never setup an absolute path, yet it works fine.

Adam August 26, 2010 at 7:40 pm

So no one can help me? surely I am not the only one wanting to access multiple drives through zappiti on the dune and having issues with setup????

Damian August 27, 2010 at 5:32 am

I don’t have multiple drives as you do so hard to help troubleshoot. I know it has been discussed on the MPCClub forum, so you may want to ask there. If you get an answer post back and I can update the guide:

Damian August 25, 2010 at 6:33 am

@ Shree,

It is frustrating when you cannot find a pattern. When I first set up Zappiti none of my tv shows would get recognized. It took me probably over 5 hours to find the problem, I had a tvshow.nfo file in each tv show folder (created by an xbmc scraper) which apparently Zappiti does not like!

As far as starting over, I would uninstall Zappiti from the control panel, and then go into your UserData/App/Local folder and delete the Zappiti folder from there as well (that is where the database is stored).

Shree August 25, 2010 at 6:46 am

Thanks Damian. No worries on the problem, while it is frustrating .. we need to keep in mind the software is free and you are as passionate about getting this to work as I am and that is great thing.

I will follow through and make sure I delete the old Zappiti foler and rebuild the database.

Are there any registry keys I need to delete?

one other question, in a NAS environment, do I still need to generate absolute path on the Dune or nfs or SMB path? Sorry for a such a simple question. I will post my experiences tomorrow after I reinstall the Zappiti.

Damian August 25, 2010 at 8:24 am

I didn’t touch the registry, just uninstalling Zappiti and clearing out the database did the trick. You can also just delete the database which forces Zappiti to start over.

I assume you always need to generate an absolute path, this is what tells the Dune where the file is located to play back. I use smb for my WHS.

shree August 28, 2010 at 7:20 am

Damian, Thanks for your input … finally I figured out what was wrong with my Zappiti db!!! Again a USER error — god how I used to hate them in my programming days — here it is again haunting me. I had put each episode in its own folder and Zappiti scan picked them up as 2 or more instances of the show. Just getting done with moving around over all the files and fixing my structure.

If you can it might help others for you to add a NOTE in your user guide a caution regarding how you should all episodes w/in a Season NN folder.

Any way .. thx again .. now to figure out the syntex for the Absolute Path… Have a great weekend!

Damian August 30, 2010 at 10:20 am

shree – doh!!! Sorry I didn’t pick up that you had each episode in its own folder. That must have taken a lot of work to set up! Glad to hear you got everything up and running now.

Dino August 26, 2010 at 9:51 pm

Hi Damian.

I’m currently using yamj on my nas for my pch. I was wondering if I add a dune, can zappitti make use of the info being used by yamj? Or do i have to create another “jukebox”?

Will there be any conflict on how yamj will read the name of the video file with how the files should be named in order for zappitti to generate and scrape the proper movie?

Damian August 27, 2010 at 5:28 am

Hi Dino,

Zappiti will use its own database, not the YAMJ jukebox unfortunately. Also, there will be no conflicts and the naming conventions should carry through between both programs (I have YAMJ running on my PCHs and Zappiti for my Dune with no issues).

Dino August 27, 2010 at 9:37 pm

Thanks Damian! Does zappitti support trailers just like yamj? I have the NFo, video file and trailer on each video folder. The trailers are named as movie filename.[trailer].mov . Will zappitti see this as a separate video and make a new poster for this?

Damian August 29, 2010 at 11:43 am

@ Dino,

Unfortunately I don’t think Zappiti or any of the other jukeboxes supports trailers (at least from what I have seen). It would be nice if there was an nfo editor (like YANFOE) that these jukeboxes used t o help better customize.

SVK August 30, 2010 at 10:15 am

This guide has been very helpful, thanks for putting it together. I was wondering if someone with experience could comment on using an internal hard drive with the Dune and operating Zapitti. I plan to use the Dune exclusively with a 2TB internal hard drive (for now) with the primary goal of eliminating the need to have a PC on when I want to watch a movie. My question is this: once I set up Zapitti using my computer, is my assumption that I will not need to use the computer while watching content accurate? Since all of my media will be stored locally on the Dune, that is my hope.

Damian August 30, 2010 at 10:22 am

You are correct, assuming all your media is stored on the internal drive and you export your Zappiti jukebox to the internal drive as well there is no need for interaction with your PC. The only time the PC will be needed is if you need to update the Zappiti jukebox

Shree August 31, 2010 at 1:16 am

Damian, You are absolutely right! It took me heck of a long time to organize the shows w/in folders and now a couple of days of work to undo the same!!! What an experience.

The golden rule to follow:
1. Movies – One movie per folder
2. TV Series – One SEASON Per folder

Now I have all my movies and TV shows w/ the right metadata.

But I am still getting an error msg and have not been able to launch anything yet… can you please take a look & advice?

Dune has a memory stick (4GB)
Dune has a 2TB Hard drive
NOTE: I am not sure if I have anything declared a system memory. Should I do that? If so, how do I do it now?

I have the _Zappiti folder and Zappiti reference on the Dune harddrive and they are full of additional folders. I am wondering what I am doing wrong!

Shree August 31, 2010 at 11:51 am

To add the error msg is “The Play List is empty”. I cannot quite figure it out!

Damian September 1, 2010 at 7:47 am

So you can view the Zappiti jukebox on your Dune, but when you play nothing happens, or you can’t even get teh Zappiti jukebox to load on your Dune?

Shree September 1, 2010 at 7:54 am

Sorry .. let me be clear:

I have my Zappiti set-up so that it is directly updating the _Zappiti folder and the Zappiti Reference folder on the Dune (2TB attached storage).

I can see the Zappiti icon (now set-up to be viewed from the default screen the Dune). When I press the play button on the remote – the Movie and TV show icons (including the episode data) all show.

But when I am on the movie thumb nail and press play (on the remote), I get an error msg “Play List Empty”.

Does that make sense?

Shree September 3, 2010 at 10:58 am

ok .. I fixed the path now. Knowing what absolute path to put in the field ended up being a pain in the you know what! But I got help from mpc club and that did the trick! Thx again for your assist as well.

Damian September 3, 2010 at 11:01 am

Great to hear Shree, now go enjoy some movies!!!

Wil September 3, 2010 at 11:16 am

Weel Shrre, thats very nice for you. I have the same problem, maybe you can help me?

Damian September 3, 2010 at 11:20 am

What is your setup and what paths are you using?

Wil September 3, 2010 at 11:43 am

Thanks voor de quick react,

I have de TV show Spartacus. These 5 DVD’s with 4 episodes each.

I work with Win. 7 64 bit

My folderpath is I:\DVD Films/series
absolute path is smb:// computername/DVD Films/series/spartacus.

This is de range,

DVD films
Spartacus S01E01
Spartacus S01E02
Spartacus S01E03 enz.

Wil September 4, 2010 at 3:34 am

Allready fixed. iso renamed to .mkv and it works.

Peter September 13, 2010 at 9:04 am

Folder Path – \\SHAWSHANK\Videos\Movies Family HD

Absolute Path – //SHAWSHANK/Videos/Movies Family HD (NOTE the “/” goes in the opposite direction as in the Folder Path.

Damian I found that in order for my Dune to be able to launch the movies, I had to only give the last part of the absolute address, say in your example “/Movies Family HD” as the full path would not work, as my Dune started from the folder mapping as default, and only needed the last part to find and launch the movie.

Damian September 13, 2010 at 1:55 pm

Thanks for sharing. It is a shame that this absolute path is so confusing and works differently for everyone, as this seems to be a large majority of the issues.

Curtis September 29, 2010 at 9:51 am

Damian, i have all my movies on a drive that is in the Dune itself. How woudl my sharepath and absolute be for me?

On the dune i have two folders
HD Movies
DVD Movies

In there are all my movies in file form.

Damian September 29, 2010 at 10:54 am

Do you know what URL name the Dune shows your drives as? For example, when you click the absolute path dropdown in the configuration there are examples of different settings, and if you look towards the bottom those examples appear to be for specific hard drives

Curtis September 29, 2010 at 11:03 am

not sure, not near it at the moment. I believe the one i used before was “DUNE @157y5″ kind of thing.. dune with a lot of alpha numeric characters after that.

Damian September 29, 2010 at 11:17 am

I don’t have an internal drive in my Dune, but my guess you would have something like this:

Share Path:
\\0131211575ytytew\HD Movies

Absolute path:
storage_uuid://0131211575ytytew/HD Movies

With “0131211575ytytew” being whatever the ID is for your dune internal drive. I am just guessing here but based on other examples this might work

Curtis September 29, 2010 at 11:40 am

Cool. Thx.. will test tonight and post back what i see.

Curtis September 29, 2010 at 7:02 pm

This is the error i get: Failed to open url… get this when i click the movie to play it?

Curtis September 29, 2010 at 7:47 pm

i have a screenshot, where can i send it to you? my share path is:
Folder Path:
\\Dune\DuneHDD_9899ccbd_85c8_4514_92d2_850031615007\HD Movies

Absolute path:
storage_uuid://DuneHDD_9899ccbd_85c8_4514_92d2_850031615007/HD Movies
then within HD Movies i have 8 sub folders (Action, War, Comedy……) should i have all movie in the root of HD Movies or will that still be fine?

Damian September 30, 2010 at 6:48 am

You can upload any screenshots to and just post the link here. You can try pointing your paths to one of the sub folders and see if that works. The error you are getting is definitely related to your absolute path

Carlos(novato) September 30, 2010 at 7:35 am

Thank Damian for all your help so far, my set up with the dune base 3.0 went fine. Setting up the zappiti went great until I tried to set up system storage. I downloaded the zip file and installed it in my hpsmartmediaserver in the pubilc file. I plugged a 4gb thumb drive to the dune and using the network browser I access the public folder. I could see the zip file but when I tried to open the file to then triedto execute the inital syst file nothing happened. I then went back to my pc and into the zip folder and cut and paste all the files out of the zip folder into the public folder individually. Went back to the dune and tried to execute the dune_service_init_system_storage.dsf” file thistime it gave me and prompt of no empty storage found. Not sure what am I doing wrong here. I have the latest betafirmware installed. Also I can access Zappiti through network browser and see the movies an the wall but when I tried to play them I get the following error” Path network browser 663db96a57e/launcher Error no such file or directory. Any help? Thanks in advance.

Damian September 30, 2010 at 7:38 am

Yes, the files need to be unzipped for you to access. Also, can you confirm what firmware you are using?

carlos September 30, 2010 at 7:50 am

firmare100706_1032beta. Let me see if I got this right. I down load the file to the public folder in myserver and then unzip it not cut and paste. Thanks

Damian September 30, 2010 at 7:57 am

OK, you need at least 1032beta firmware running to add system storage so you should be fine. Cutting/Unzipping should be the same. Just unzip the files to any folder that you can access on your Dune, and run “dune_service_init_system_storage.dsf”. Try creating a folder under your Videos Shared folder (Call it something like Dune Storage) and place the file there. Navigate to the file on the Dune and see if you are able to set it up. Let me know if it works, I know some other people have had problems with the USB drive itself that they tried using

carlos September 30, 2010 at 8:18 am

tried it no luck. also used a different thumb drive will no I feels like a race where you can see the end but not there yet.Thank you again

Damian September 30, 2010 at 8:27 am

Hmmmm….I am out of ideas as it worked the first time I tried to set up. Try asking the question either on the Zappiti MPCClub forum ( or and the Dune AVS Forum ( Hopefully it is just something we overlooked.

Curtis September 30, 2010 at 11:54 am

So if the absolute path is wrong then what should i be inputting? Again here is my setup:

Zappiti on desktop on 192.168.0.x network
Dune on same network
Hard drive with ALL movies is in the dune itself
On the Dune mainscreen see my movies in the following dir:
HDD>HD Movies>Genre (where genre can be Action, Animated, etc)
**does a space in HD Movies matter?

Curtis September 30, 2010 at 4:36 pm

I think i got it. The path and absolute path needed to be like this:

\\\DUNE_UUID\HD Movies
storage_name://DUNE_UUID/HD Movies/

Jamie October 1, 2010 at 12:10 am

I’m running into a problem with Zappiti since I added some hard drives. My previous shares are fine, and using the identical absolute path to those shares (just changing the name of the shared folder) I get the url not found error. Now if I put anything other than what should be the correct syntax (I’m using smb://JAMIE-PC/Movies4, just like the working folder path of smb://JAMIE-PC/Dune/Movies), I get a different error (won’t even say url not found, just a numbers and letters string). I can see the drives in the Dune network browser and play the files from there (Home>Network Browers>SMB>WORKGROUP>JAMIE-PC>Movies4), so I can’t see what the problem is. I’ve added a hdd in the past and it worked fine, but the new ones are on an external 4-bay SATA via port duplication connected to my PC, so I just didn’t know if somehow Zapitti had a problem with that (again, there’s no issue accessing them from the PC or the Dune Network Browser). Any thoughts?

Marc October 6, 2010 at 2:38 pm

I just purchased the HDI HD Max with an internal 2TB disk that is also used for Zappiti. I tried to get Zappiti running but most likely, the paths I am using are not correct. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to set it up properly.

I tried the following:

Folder path:

Rewrite absolute path when exporting:

This did not work, however adding following to Rewrite absolute path:

Resulted in the possibility to start the movies but with a too low framerate.

Any idea what I am doing wrong? As mentioned, it is an internal hard drive on the Dune unit.

Many thanks for your help.

Damian October 6, 2010 at 2:47 pm

First off what do you think of the Max, I think you are the first person I have spoken to who has received???

Another poster above with an internal drive set up his path as this:

\\\DUNE_UUID\HD Movies
storage_name://DUNE_UUID/HD Movies/

Give that a try.

Marc October 8, 2010 at 1:54 pm

Thanks for the reply Damian. I will try it out this weekend and let you know.

I have been testing a lot of movies last week on the Max and until now, all works very good! No hickups, perfect DTS sound quality. So upto now very happy :-)

Paul October 6, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Hi Damian

Fantastic article, found it very helpful. The only difference for me is all my data is stored on 1tb drive on dune, I have stored all zappiti seems to work, however when I select HD drive then the folder in my case, (HD movies) the zappiti, icon is there, I can click on that and see the movie covers, with a number down at the bottom of the icon, however if I click on that all I see is the launcher icon, is this simply because I have the early software ends 1444 update 1. If I update the software, to what you suggest can I simply put the folder on the dune via my home network, then simply extract the file, will this work, help would be appreciated.

Damian October 12, 2010 at 3:14 pm

Hi Paul,

Yes, you would need to update to the latest firmware

Joe October 8, 2010 at 7:59 am

Hi All,

Special thanks to Damian for the brilliant explanation on setting it up. Also great work by the Zappiti people – very nice work.

I’m having difficulty in getting the system storage set up so that i can create a shortcut on the main dune menu. I’ve read through all the threads here and i seem to be missing something in the process.

here’s what i’ve got . . .
- Firmware version 1008_0034 (couldn’t find where to download v100706_1032_beta that is mentioned in the tutorial) I’m guessing that it’s a later version number so it should be ok.
- I’ve downloaded the system storage zip file and extracted it and then copied it onto the 1TB drive installed in the Dune Max. I’ve copied it simply in a folder on the hard-drive using the FTP funciton of the player.
- i then navigate to the folder on the Dune’s HDD and run the ‘dune_service_init_system_storage.dsf’.

It’s at this point that i get an Error stating ‘Unsupported product’.

Even if i navigate using the network browser function to the Zappiti folders the player won’t allow me to create a shortcut by pressing the ‘pop up menu’ button.

does the newer realese software not support the System Storage function?

Any ideas and help would be appreciated.

Damian October 8, 2010 at 8:14 am

You need to grab the latest fw for this to work. You can find the 1032 fw here ( or you should be able to download it directly from your dune

Joe October 8, 2010 at 8:25 am

Thanks for the info . . .

i have a really silly question. The dune website shows firmware for the Prime and Base models. I’m using a Max – so which do i choose?

I’ve also used the firmware download function through the player and when i check for available updates (even with ‘ignore non-stabe versions’ set to ‘no’) the only firmware options are . . .
100916_2027_beta (non-stable)
100828_0034 (current)

Thanks for the help so far.

Krypto November 4, 2010 at 2:36 am

Hey Joe,

Is it possible that we can talk about some dune hd max stuff? send me a mail if your interrested :)

Damian October 8, 2010 at 8:29 am

Go with the 100916_2027_beta for your Max

_Miquez October 13, 2010 at 6:20 am

A quick questions, maybe some of you ran into this problem. I followed the guide and everything was set up very nicely.

One problem: while all info about TV show episodes was scraped perfectly (director, synopsis, etc.) NONE of my movie details were scraped by Zappiti.

I know that it correctly identified the movie because it pulls the images, the title and the release date, but nothing else.

Here is a screenshot of what all my movie detail screens look like:

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Damian October 13, 2010 at 6:33 am

Can you try rescraping just that one movie in your screenshot and see if all the info pulls in. I know there have been issues with IMDB that may be causing the issue you are seeing. Also, if you have an nfo created by other programs such as YANFOE Zappiti will use it but leave out info

_Miquez October 13, 2010 at 6:38 am

Hello Damian,

Thanks for the lightning-fast reply.

1. I tried going into a movie details screen and selecting ‘Scrap Details’ – the movie is correctly identified, but only the above-mentioned info is pulled in, nothing else.

2. I have no .nfo files in any of the folders.

So it seems that this is an issue with IMDB? The strange thing is that this is not only for some movies – essentially, the details are not pulled in for ANY of the 30 movies I have in the catalog.

Damian October 13, 2010 at 6:49 am

Then it is definitely an IMDB issue. Many people have been reporting this for the last few days over on MPCClub. I haven’t added any new movies in a few weeks so I haven’t come across the issue yet.

_Miquez October 13, 2010 at 6:57 am

Come to think of it, didn’t IMDB recently change its website design? I don’t know how Zappiti connects to IMDB, but maybe this has something to do with it.

Anyhow, thanks again, I will wait a few days to see if anything changes.

_Miquez October 13, 2010 at 9:36 am

I can confirm it is an IMDB problem – it is already on Zappiti’s bug tracking platform:

Damian October 13, 2010 at 9:37 am

Also, to make things worse TVDB is down as well :-(

Michael October 14, 2010 at 4:38 am

How do those third party jukeboxes work? Are they installed directly on the Dune? I.e. can I use them while by PC is turned off?

Damian October 14, 2010 at 6:03 am

You set up and manage the 3rd party jukeboxes on a PC, but to actually access/use the jukebox you do not need your PC on.

Michael October 14, 2010 at 12:18 pm

Thanks. I’ve no read that Zappiti would actually be installed on my SMB share (or I guess another source like a connected hard drive), and is started from there, but not strictly installed on the device itself.

This sounds as if these Jukeboxes are implemented as pre-generated static content (say like a bunch of HTML pages), rather than actually being an “application”. Is that understanding correct?

Does anybody have a link to developer information or something along those lines?

I’m trying to decide between a Dune device or the NeoTV 550.

Damian October 14, 2010 at 2:26 pm

Correct, the jukebox creates static pages which the Dune then accesses. These static pages are what you export from Zappiti to a shared drive that your Dune can access

Ruckuz October 14, 2010 at 11:16 pm

If you want to change Scrap to Scrape, just edit the XML file located here with those edits:
C:\Program Files\HDLand\Zappiti\Languages\en-US.xml

Damian October 15, 2010 at 6:08 am

Thanks, that was an easy fix :-)

Do you know if this file gets replaced every time you upgrade to a new version?

Ruckuz October 15, 2010 at 9:50 am

My guess is that it probably does get replaced.
Might be a good idea just to send the developers the updated file.
Hopefully they would include the changes in the newer versions.

MovieMan October 17, 2010 at 10:20 am

Thanks so much for the great guide. The only problem I have is when you go to the movie info screen. There is no cast or synopsis in the lower half box like you have in the guide. I just have a blank box. So please let me know what I’m missing to get this movie detail to import and become viewable when the move is selected

Damian October 17, 2010 at 11:27 am

There is a problem with IMDB scraping (I think IMDB changed something). I know the issue has been brought to the attention of the developers so hopefully a fix will be released soon. For now I just manually input the info

Musicman October 17, 2010 at 6:25 pm

Thanks for the quick response. That’s what i’ve been doing all day. 250 down 325 to go.

Shree October 18, 2010 at 3:48 am

1. Does the Zappiti do a complete scan of the db and update all metadata every time or only the new ones that need to be scanned .. I am hoping that the scans are incremental?

2. On the TV series side, if a show has been added and then removed (i.e. all episodes deleted) is there a way to remove the show from the menu yet? Damian, I know you had highlighted it as a bug .. just wondering if that was fixed.

Damian October 18, 2010 at 7:42 am

1. Incremental

2. Yes, you can delete/remove the show from the menu now. However, I have another bug I am dealing with. I have a TV show that is not being scraped correctly. I see no way to change this. I am going to try and post my issues to the developers to see what the problem is.

shree October 18, 2010 at 7:53 am

I deleted all associated episodes and am stuck with an icon on the main page of the TV shows I am stuck w/ an icon I cannot get rid of! Hope this will be fixed.

Also, I have a second NAS unit in my config. I have migrated all the movies to the new NAS. When I change the paths in Zappiti, will Zappiti scan all these movies as new ones? If so I will have to redo all the groups? I am just wondering how much time I should allocate to restablish the process!

Damian October 18, 2010 at 9:10 am

You will probably have to redo. I believe that Zappiti will clear out all the movies from the original NAS

shree October 18, 2010 at 9:29 am

Thanks! That settles it .. I will wait for the update from Zappiti to the IMDB adjustments before running another udpate. Hope they get it done soon.

shaun October 21, 2010 at 9:13 am

Hi Damian
just ordered ahdi dune smart D1
ive read every post on zappiti (took me days)
heres what im after answering please and please dont get angry with me if its been posted already

i plan to have a internal hdd and a hdd via usb conected to the smart
no connection to the internet at all

heres my questions

1,when i set up zappiti on my pc i can first scan the hdds attched to the pc scan my movies but what paths do i use (lets call them hdd1 internal hdd2 external usb)

2,my Usb hdd is full of movies so i wont need to keep rescaning that one will i just scan first time and then leave plugged into hdi smart i have to export to this drive or can zappiti play movies from just one location

3,i will be adding movies and tv shows to internal hdd( hdd1) the smart player near enough the pc to plug it into usb slave so i can rescan that hdd for new movies and tv shows

i just need answers to what paths to use and what share paths to use i havnt a clue on the dropdown menu
any guide on just having hdds and no network or smb would be great thanks

sorry if ive missed anything thats been answered already guides and posts ive seen seem to be for smb and networks……

ohh just remembered my movie on hdd1 (internal)are all mkv and my tv series
hdd2(external) has blueray, dvd, mkv, movies in there own folders in one movie folder ive played around with zappiti and it sees them all so i dont have to put them in one folder will i have to save the zappiti resouses and zappiti folder to this drive or can i have it saved just to hdd1(internal)

Do i need a usb memory stick been seeig this alot or can i make a short cut on the dune to go directly to zappiti havnt a clue yet

Many thanks for any help sorry once again if this has been asked before

Damian October 22, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Sorry for the late reply, got bombarded at work and trying to get caught up on all my emails/work.

As far as your questions I am not sure how much help I can be because I only tested Zappiti using my media on my Windows Home Server. I didn’t use any drives attached to the dune externally or internally.

1. Yes, you can scan with the drives attached to your PC. However, I think you may have an issue once you connect these drives to your Dune. Everytime you launch Zappiti on your PC it scans your jukebox, and if files are missing it will attempt to clean u p (i.e. remove from the database). Unless you reattach your drives to your PC I would think any files on these drives would show up as missing. I wonder if you could attach to your DUne and then have Zappiti view from there

2. You don’t have to export to the drive where your movies are on, you can export to a central location (i.e. thumb drive)

3. You would want to use a USB stick and set up as system storage so you can add shortcuts.

I am sorry if I am not much help. Best bet would be to ask over on the Zappiti thread on MPCClub because I know there are several people who have set up paths with attached drives such as yourself.

shaun October 22, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Cheers damian
for the reply
yes i can reattach the drives to the pc via usb slve as the pc is near to where the dune would worries on that score
i just need to know the paths i would need to export to
if i can i will try the usb stick method you said..

i just though i would have to export to all the hdds drive folders that contained the movie folders

hanks again only thing to do is wait for the dune and have a bash and then start asking stupid questions again…lol
thanks again

_Miquez October 23, 2010 at 5:18 am

Any one of you ran into this problem? I have a movie in a folder, and an .srt subtitle file with the exact same name in the same folder. When I play the movie file from Dune’s file browser, the subtitle is correctly identified. If I launch the movie from Zappiti, Dune doesn’t recognize that there is a subtitle there.

Thanks for your help!

Damian October 30, 2010 at 5:38 pm

Hmmm…havent seen that issue but I don’t use srt subtitles

Bernard October 30, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Why some movies just refuse to be scraped at all? I mean apart from the temporary problem with the synopsis and all (IMDB update!).
For example, Saving private ryan is identified and scraped, but then when I look for it in Zappiti. the cover is plain gray, and drilling down to the movies card shows nothing, just empty. I know it is about this specific movie because the path is still ok. And there are many like these.
Another example would be “Hitler: The rise of evil”. Feeding it the right name or the exact IMDB reference does not help. Scraping fails all the time.

Any idea?

Damian October 30, 2010 at 5:37 pm

Not sure, it has been hit or miss with scraping of late with Zappiti. Usually I check my scraping right after it is done and if it doesn’t look correct then I just edit it manually. I really do hope the developers can fix these nagging issues soon.

Krypto November 2, 2010 at 7:33 am

Hello Damian,

Great work your doing, I have linked this guide to several of my friends and I know just because of this guide that is so good and well explained and after watching a youtube video showing how it looks they want to get a dune and this program :)

I’m getting the HD dune max soon I hope!

I’m reading all the stuff I can about setting it up towards my synology ds410 with 4x2tb space and zappiti.. When I get it I will give a smallish review of the Dune hd max + zappiti + nas = working together, in this comments and I might help some ppl that got problemes if I know how to solve them.. However before I get my own up and running I might throw a few questions in here if I get some problems..

Thanks again for the great guide and the quick responses to ppl that comments, you have earned a spot in the media heaven :)

Damian November 2, 2010 at 8:20 am

Glad you have enjoyed my guides and thanks for the kind words. Hopefully you will get your Max soon, and you know where to find me if you have any questions :-)

Krypto November 2, 2010 at 11:01 am

So first thing I stumble into, look at these ss:
I have added a few movies and all seems to not get dl correctly from imdb, however it works with californication? haven’t tried other tvshows..

Krypto November 2, 2010 at 11:07 am

Is it because imdb is still failing? and the tvshows are downloading from another site, tvdb..?

_Miquez November 2, 2010 at 11:16 am

Yes, exactly. TV show detailed are scraped from another source.

I checked the bug-tracking and reporting platform for Zappiti, and they are already working on the IMDB fix as well:

Krypto November 2, 2010 at 11:50 am

Cool, i’ll wait for that, manually editing all my movies is going to take forever :)

Krypto November 3, 2010 at 2:44 am

Is it possible to download the skins peterbus use under his catagories? which by the way looks awesome!

Paul August 15, 2011 at 4:14 am

I have a synology DS 710+ in combination with a dune BD Prime 3.0.
I cannot get Zappiti to work. Making covers etc works fine, but I keep on getting an URL error. I have tried smb access, as well as regular network access but cannot get it to work. How did you set up your different paths in zappiti in combination with the Synology NAS? And did you use SMB protocol, or something else?

Thanks in advance for your reply

Damian August 15, 2011 at 4:23 am

Hi Paul,

Can you give more details on your paths that you set up in Zappiti, it sounds like you have an incorrect absolute path

Paul August 15, 2011 at 1:20 pm

Hoi Damian,

Thanks for your fast reply. I have found and fixed my problem via trial and error already though.
Setting the path to “smb://IP-adres/video/subfolder” did work after many different tries, and setting up my firewall (!) properly.

So…problem solved :-) :-) :-)

But thanks anyways for your reply. I really appreciate this!

Damian November 3, 2010 at 4:51 am

@ Krypto,

I assume you are talking about changing the icons? It is very easy to do. This is what Zappiti looks like for me:

Krypto November 3, 2010 at 8:34 am

Yeah its easy to change, however where do you get those awesome icons your useing? :)

By the way anyone that has zappiti running on a dune hd max, on mpc forum a guy was complaining that the firmware did work with dune hd max, meaning that zappiti didn’t work..

Damian November 3, 2010 at 8:56 am
Macman November 4, 2010 at 1:58 pm

Hi Damian,

I have a problem with scraping movies, actually DVD structures, that are not automatically identified by Zappiti. The indivdual vob files show up and I do not seem to be able to make Zappiti point to the folder instead of the individual files. When I edit a movie and correct the media path from for example Y:\Kids Films\Frogger\video_ts.vob to Y:\Kids Films\Frogger \ this does not seem to saved. Is this a known behavior and is there a way to edit this ‘behind the scenes’ ?

Damian November 5, 2010 at 5:59 am

Hi MacMan,

So for Zappiti, you have your path that Zappiti is pointed to as Y:\Kids Films, correct?

Also, you mention Y:\Kids Films\Frogger\video_ts.vob. Do you mean you have a Video_TS folder and then the vobs are in that folder as I would expect? Based on what you mention it instead looked like you don’t have a Video_TS folder but instead your vob file is named video_ts.vob.

Let me know, I have several DVD structures and no issues with Zappiti scraping/recognizing properly

Macman November 5, 2010 at 2:47 pm

Doh ! I indeed did seem to have forgotten some video_ts subfolders for some of the DVD structures. This is no problem for the dune itself, but it is for Zappiti. I added these for the failing folders and it worked !

Thanks !

carlos November 5, 2010 at 7:23 am

Hi guys!
I have been able to get zappiti to work well with movie part but for tv shows I have not, I an sure thet it has to do with the way I have it sset up. The tv show I have are from dvd’s season I bought at the store and not individually recorded from the tv. I rip them using fab dvd as a discs. I create a folder in tvshows with the name of the show (mad man,as an example) then inside the folder make a new folder season one, inside that folder I paste the disc 1 that I ripped and disc2 and 3. Zappiti scrapes and identify the show but it can not play and episopdes. Was I suppossed to rip every episode individually rether than a disc? thanks

Damian November 5, 2010 at 7:28 am

Hi Carlos,

I rip my tv show dvds to individual episodes instead of discs like you do, so I can’t confirm how to get it to work with your setup. However, I know there is another member using Zappiti who is having the same issues as you, so it may have to do with how Zappiti recognizes DVD folder rips of tv shows. Have you given any thoughts to just doing individual episodes?

carlos November 5, 2010 at 8:50 am

when you save it into the folder inside season one, do you name that episode by it name or by the episode number? example mad man>seasonone>at it again or madman>season one> episode 5?

Damian November 5, 2010 at 8:53 am

You can just name it S##E##. So in your example you would just name it S01E05.mkv, etc…

A did a writeup regarding tv shows here if it helps –

carlos November 5, 2010 at 8:57 am

thanks. one thing thease are reg dvd not BD I asume it is still the same.

Damian November 5, 2010 at 9:04 am

Reg DVDs is fine, I use MakeMKV with those to grab the individual episodes

carlos November 5, 2010 at 9:07 am

I am using cloneDVD2 is MakeMKV better or easier?

Damian November 5, 2010 at 9:12 am

Just a different product. MakeMKV is extremely easy to use, especially for creating mkvs without encoding. It is currently free to use while in beta

pierre November 7, 2010 at 9:10 am

I had try the smb with zappiti but I get the same error “Invalid URL”. Note that SMB under Dune work fine. I suspect it is due to Windows 7. Damian, if you can try out copy one movie to a Windows 7 machine and try out. I had try many different combination. Enable guest a/c in Win7 including share permission and folder permission, use IP instead of server name, with/without username:password all doesn’t work. One combination does connect which is using nfs but unfortunately the movie stutter using nfs share.

Damian November 9, 2010 at 8:09 am

Hi Pierre,

If I have some time I will test out. Since I have always used WHS for sharing my media I haven’t spent much time trying with W7. Have you tried posting on MPCClub Zappiti thread as well, as I recall seeing a few posts about smb sharing from W7

_Miquez November 16, 2010 at 7:04 am

Zappiti has just been updated, they fixed the IMDB scraping issue (I haven’t tried it yet). See list of changes:

Damian November 16, 2010 at 7:15 am

Correct, the IMDB scraping issue has been fixed

Paul November 16, 2010 at 9:34 am

Installed the update working great, but now u have no fanart or covers for the movies, it says at the top downloading pictures, but itseems not to work, anybody have this issue

Damian November 22, 2010 at 11:28 am

Are you still having this issue? I have had no problems with the latest Zappiti pulling in fanart/covers

Steve November 19, 2010 at 9:13 am

I have one question – with our previous NMP and now with the native browser on our new Dune, we organized the filesystem so that the kids could open movies from their own top level directory and not run the risk of watching something they shouldn’t. Granted, there’s nothing to stop them from picking the “Grown Up” folder off the root, but at least it was something. As shiny and cool as this app is, it does sort of lump everything together, at least if you click on the “Movies” button. Sure, you can browse by category, but even then, there is room for interpretation. A Bionicle movie and Scarface are both potentially “Action” movies.
How do I set this up so that the kids have a clear choice right off the bat that will limit them to things they should be watching? Thanks for any suggestions!

Damian November 19, 2010 at 9:19 am

Some sort of parental control is definitely sorely lacking with Zappiti. Right now the only thing I could think to do is install Zappiti on a second PC, and create a Zappiti jukebox just with your kids movies. By accessing this Zappiti database on your Dune they will only see their movies.

Of course the challenge, how do you keep them opening up only the Kids Zappiti on the Dune and not the Adult Zappiti. Not sure there is an answer to that one. It would be nice if you could lock or password protect shortcuts on the Dune main menu, that would be probably be the answer and you could lock your kids out of the Adult Zappiti. Unfortunately I believe that would require HDI Dune implementing this on their side (maybe make a feature request)?

Steve November 19, 2010 at 9:36 am

That would be great if they did that. As for the workaround, thanks. Maybe I will host their stuff on internal storage on the Dune and our stuff on the network, and have two databases that way. At least for the next couple years, saving them from temptation in that way will probably work, but with Zappiti scraping rating from the web already, it seems like it ought to be fairly straightforward for somebody (Zappiti, Dune, joint effort) to add a Zappiti setting where we can say “anything above PG requires this code, and anything above PG13 requires this other code”. Same for TV ratings, etc. That would be sweet. Anyway, thanks again.

Patric November 21, 2010 at 3:49 am

Thank you for your awesome setup guide.
I encounter some problems with my nfo files though:

I’ve got several movies with a BDMV folder structure (M2TS). Unfortunately, Zappiti ignores the .nfo + fanart/backdrop files saved together with it.

Where do I have to place these files that Zappiti can use them? Is there any special naming needed?

Generally I could mux the 3 m2ts-files into one and use that one as the single movie file, but that would be quite some work I’d like to avoid.
Thanks for your help!

Damian November 22, 2010 at 11:18 am

Good question, I just checked and my nfos for BluRay folders don’t appear to be getting used either (only a small percentage of my files are in BluRay folders). All metatdata/art is stored at the root of the movie folder. It looks like the cover (folder.jpg) and backdrop (backdrop.jpg) is used, just not the nfo

Patric November 22, 2010 at 1:33 pm

hey damian

I tried now every possible way to name and place the files but had no luck. Zappiti doesn’t even use my art files when I store them in the movie folder. The only thing that works is when you place the nfo file in the root folder and name it exactly like the movie folder. but artwork isn’t detected at all.
As I couldn’t find any hints in all the different forums, I guess this is a function that is just missing…..bad luck….I guess I need to scrape them directly by zappiti…..

Cyrua The Virus November 27, 2010 at 6:53 am

Ok, i got zappiti working with my internal 500 gB HDD on the dune 3.0. However when i connect an external hdd, i can import the movies and get the data but when i want to start from zappiti indez on the dune nothing happens. The path to the HDD is known but the absolute path is empty, just as it is with my internal HDD. (when i use smb: in front of absolute path the movies will play but stuther a lot.)
How can i get my external hdd to work???

Thx in advance.

Wiebenik November 29, 2010 at 1:30 pm

I’m trying to prepare zappiti before buying a Dune smart.
Zappiti should manage my video and music collection.
So far, I read a lot about managing video collections with Zappiti but nothing about managing audio collections.
I downloaded zappiti and I tried to manage video and music files.
Via the configuration wizard, I configured a video file. Than I did “scrape”, and the file was found. Thats good.
But, in the same way I tried configuring music files. I also used the button new movie folder (their is no button new music folder) to configure the video files. But no music files were found when I pressed scrape.
The question is:
- can Zappiti manage music files? [I need to manage at least a few hundres Gb]
- If yes, how should files be configured? Where can I find instructions for managing music files?

Thanks for helping.

Damian November 29, 2010 at 2:23 pm

When you say music files are you talking about music videos or music (as in mp3s, FLAC, etc…)? I assume you are talking about music mp3s, etc…. which unfortunately Zappiti does not support. I am hoping in the near future we will see a music jukebox for the Dunes

wiebenik November 29, 2010 at 3:03 pm

I’m talking music as in mp3′s, FLAC, etc.
Are there no music jukeboxes suitable for the DUnes?
The regular ones, winamp, media monkey, windows media player, etc, do not work with the dunes?

Damian November 29, 2010 at 3:05 pm

Unfortunately no, there are no music jukeboxes. I am surprised that no one has come along and created. My guess this is because so much of the focus with the Dunes (and most other media players) is video playback so music gets pushed to the side. You can still play your music on the Dune but you have to go through the boring Windows Explore type view.

wiebenik November 29, 2010 at 3:12 pm

That’s a pitty.
So their is no possibility that you can, for example, use cover art for viewing the video files?
It’s just a long list of filenames in a window explorer view of map structure?

wiebenik November 29, 2010 at 3:12 pm

I meant music files in my earlier email.

Damian November 29, 2010 at 3:17 pm

Yeah, no luck viewing any sort of cover art for music files.

Grzesiek November 30, 2010 at 1:40 am

Hello everybody,

Is there any critical parameters for USB pendrive as far as system storage is considered (I mean capacity and read/write speed) for Zappiti base?

Damian November 30, 2010 at 5:14 am

If you are just talking about system storage (for enabling shortcuts, etc…) then no, I would just go with a simple 2GB USB drive (That is what I use). If you were thinking about storing your Zappiti jukebox on a USB drive I would go with at least a 4GB model (just looking at my Zappiti jukebox and it takes up a little over 2GB on my WHS)

Grzesiek November 30, 2010 at 5:19 am

Thank you for very quick answer.
The same USB drive CAN perform both funcionality (system storage plus storing Jukebox) I suppose. Am I right ?

Damian November 30, 2010 at 5:25 am

Not sure. Once you set up a USB drive as system storage you lose access to it for file storage purposes on the Dune. I don’t know if you can possibly set up 2 partitions on the USB drive. I would recommend just using a dedicated USB drive for system storage (throw it inside the case so once you set it up it is out of the way) and then keep a separate USB drive for your Zappiti jukebox (if you decide to go that route). Since you would probably be moving the Zappiti USB drive back and forth between the Dune and your PC to update it makes sense to keep it separate from system storage

Grzesiek November 30, 2010 at 5:37 am

It is clearer now:).
Can I use SD card for one of this purpouse (probably NOT, because I’ve tried to format SD card in EXT2 with no success) ?

thank you Damian for your help

Damian November 30, 2010 at 5:39 am

I would try using the SD card as system storage. Let the Dune try to format it and see if that works. I have never tried with an SD card so I can’t say for sure if it would work or not

Steve November 30, 2010 at 6:20 am

I am using an SD card as system storage on my Smart D1. I don’t remember exactly how I ended up doing it, but I think I let the Dune format it, then used the updated system storage utilities on

Grzesiek December 3, 2010 at 12:48 am

Tried to do this, but with no success, so I wonder how you did it.
First of all Dune Smart is not able to format SD.
When I formatted SD card on my PC and put in the slot, it is not recognized by Smart.

Steve December 3, 2010 at 6:37 am

I know I definitely formatted the card in the player, not on a PC. I seem to remember that I read somewhere that some SD cards may not work with the player, although I cannot find where I read that just now. Anyway, I am using a Sandisk 4GB Micro SDHC card with an adapter to make it fit the slot. It’s a fairly common, cheapo sort of card.

I put it in the player, and followed the instructions here reagarding how to run dune_service_init_system_storage.dsf:

As they suggested, the SD card was the only empty storage attached to the Dune at the time, I had placed the dsf file in the filesystem of the internal hard drive, and I had successfully formatted the SD card with the option found via the INFO button prior to running the dsf.

Now that it’s working, I am loathe to try to recreate the step-by-step by removing the SD card and going through the process again. Seems like a lot of people are encountering trouble with this, and I don’t want to become one of them!

Steve December 3, 2010 at 6:55 am

Just a though in another direction all together, but I know the reason I wanted to use SD was because having that flash drive sticking out of the back of the drive sounded like trouble. I figured eventually, it would get snapped off by something. Also, there does not appear to be an internal USB port on the D1. I have not used either of these drives, but maybe something low profile like this would be the ticket if you are having trouble formatting the SD card, but have the same reservations I did about a normal form factor USB flash drive hanging out of the player:

From reading the desciption, they both sound like they ship with some encryption bloatware installed, but hopefully you can blow all that away with a format. Just an idea…

Steve December 6, 2010 at 7:22 pm

Just realized on my 12/3 post that I posted some misinformation about the lack of an internal USB port in the D1 – there is one under the metal hard drive tray. Just 4 more screws to run out…

Cyrus The Virus November 30, 2010 at 7:34 am

Damian, please help me with the question asked above;
Ok, i got zappiti working with my internal 500 gB HDD on the dune 3.0. However when i connect an external hdd, i can import the movies and get the data but when i want to start from zappiti index on the dune nothing happens. The path to the HDD is known but the absolute path is empty, just as it is with my internal HDD. (when i use smb: in front of absolute path the movies will play but stuther a lot.)
How can i get my external hdd to work???

Thx in advance.

Steve November 30, 2010 at 10:52 am

Did you see this? Looks like absolute path is not shown as SMB but rather as local storage syntax. How you determine your actual values may take a little trial and error. Maybe you can see that in the properties of the drive on the Dune – at work so cannot check right now.:

“Ok, hope this helps you guys

I have 4 USB drives plugged straight into my Dune and in Zappiti my config looks like this:

Folder Path:

(where “Drive_name” is the name of the shared drive when seen by mapping via SMB)

Absolute Path:

I worked this out by creating a shortcut on the Dune main page to a movie and checking its properties via the popup menu

Works a treat for me “

Damian November 30, 2010 at 11:18 am

Sorry for not responding Cyrus, I thought you were a virus :-)

I see Steve just answered as well, attached storage should not have smb in the absolute path, but instead should have the storage name

Cyrus The Virus November 30, 2010 at 2:01 pm

Thx Steve, youre answer works for me, its awesome that is works, looking very proffesional

shaun December 2, 2010 at 2:56 am

Hi all
i have a d1 just wondering how i get the jpg images in folders to display as thumbnails cant see any thumbnail previews i have to open the folder and then select the jpg
any help would be great thanks

Hung December 6, 2010 at 9:05 pm

Dear Damian,
Firstly, I would like to thank you for the tutorial.
About Zappiti, I keep getting the message “The current version of Zappiti can not open the database selected. Try a newer version of Zappiti” although I had already uninstall the old one, delete all the data in AppData folder, delete all the related registry key and installed the latest one (
But after that, I still stuck with that message. Can you please tell me how can I fix this?
Thank you!

Bart de Lepper December 19, 2010 at 4:15 pm

Hey guys,

I have the same problem as almost everyone here, and i can’t get my Dune to play the files as they should, even after reading days and days about it on this site, and also on

First i used Dune Explorer, but now i’m switching to Zappiti.
Zappiti works fine, it scrapes my movies and tv shows, and on my Dune can perfectly use the Zappiti menu, and scroll thru the various items.

But when i actually want to watch a movie or tv show, its a no-go..
Depending of what (obviously wrong) settings i use in the configuration The Dune tells me there is no playlist, or that the file location is not there, or it does nothing at all, and just “stays” in the movie / tv show info screen i’m in at that moment.

I’ve tried every setting i could find in the examples, and on the whole internet, and are ready to throw my Dune out of the window right now..
I’m sure its something simple, because i actually CAN manually watch tv series and movies using the share i did when using Dune Explorer. Maybe someone can help me with this??

This is my setup:

I have a Dune Prime 3.0. All my movies and tv series are on my unRAID server (9 disks), which puts out two network shares named “Movies” and “TVseries”, which contains ALL my movies and tv shows.
The unRAID server is called “TOWER” in my network, and is accessible with internet explorer and also thru my Dune.
In my Dune i can acces the “Movies” folder using smb with this network adress:, the foldername “Movies”, and the username “root”, with no password. Same with TVseries.

I made a share path for Zappity on my unRAID server on “disk1″ (my server is always on, this way my pc doesn’t have to be switched on all the time), and in the “Share path:” field it now says: \\TOWER\disk1\Zappiti
In the “Folder path:” i tried everything, from: \\TOWER\Movies to \\\Movies . In the “Rewrite absolute path when exporting:”field i also tried everuthing i could find and imagine, from //TOWER/Movies to //TOWER/Movies/ to \\TOWER\Movies to nothing at all and many more things.
Offcourse nothing works. Removing Zappiti wasn’t working either, i’ve tried this a few times to.

You probably think i’m some lunatic newbie at this network stuf. You are completely right and sorry about that!!

I’ve posted this on both this site and

Thanx very much in advance for anyone trying to help me with this!

Damian December 19, 2010 at 4:25 pm

Have you added “smb:” to the front of your absolute path?

Bart de Lepper December 19, 2010 at 4:26 pm

Yes i’ve tried that to.

Bart de Lepper December 19, 2010 at 4:29 pm

That is with the next settings:

Folder path: \\TOWER\Movies
second field: smb://TOWER/Movies , like your example.

Damian December 19, 2010 at 4:33 pm

What is your share path where your Zappiti jukebox is exported to? Also, to confirm, you don’t need a username/password to access your shares?

Bart de Lepper December 19, 2010 at 4:38 pm

My share path is \\TOWER\disk1\Zappiti
I think i do need a password to acces the shares. Windows remembers the username and password, but in my Dune when accessing the server i use the username “root” with no password.

Damian December 19, 2010 at 4:45 pm

I think if you need a username/password to access your smb on the Dune you also need the username/password as part of your absolute path.

I am not familiar with unRAID so I don’t know how that setup would differ from WHS

Bart de Lepper December 19, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Ok thanx, i’m gonna try this.

I’ll get back to you tomorrow, it’s night here now..

Bart de Lepper December 20, 2010 at 4:58 pm

I’ve tried this, sadly it’s not working..

Thanx for the tip anyway..

Bart de Lepper December 20, 2010 at 5:36 pm

I tried using a username in the the path. First i had no password, but now i’ve set one, just to be sure that no password is not a problem.

To bad its not working though..

What i did discovered, is that the line has to begin with: “smb://”, and NOT: “smb//”.
When using the first example my Dune tells me: “Failed to open URL”. When i use the second example, without the : , i get lots of faults.

And now the strange part:

First, i had the Zappiti setup include my TVseries. Everytime i use the “export to Dune”-button, it takes a long time to send all the data, so i thought, why not remove the TVseries-settings from the configuration screen.
So now its removed, the TVseries are still in place in the Zappiti menu, and all there. When i now press the enter button, a TVshow starts playing like it should!! (but its not scraping my new series now i suppose?)

Why not remove the Movies folder as well? Well, because this doesn’t work: “no such file or directory”, my Dune says in the second window. The first window at the back says: “Aanmaken Afspeellijst” (make playlist), and then some text i can’t read because the second window is in front of it..

Ideas anyone?

Bart de Lepper December 21, 2010 at 4:52 pm

Ok guys,

After days of struggeling i finnaly found what i did wrong.
Its so easy and simple, i must be really stupid:

My server is named Tower.

The problem was that i could not get the right name for the share path and Movies & TV folders.

My server puts 2 shares out, named Movies and TVseries.
So used the shared path \\Tower , \\Tower\Movies for Movies and \\Tower\TVseries for TVseries.

The reason that this does NOT work, is that \\Tower is the NAME of my server, and is actually not a folder name, but a network name. And Zappiti needs to make and use two folders in the share FOLDER. Offcourse this is not working, because Tower is no folder..

The solution was to delete the Movies and TVseries share, and create a new share named Media, which contains both folders Movies and TVseries.

Everything works just fine now.

Thanx everyone for trying to help me with this!! Keep up the good work!

Damian December 21, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Interesting, thanks for sharing your solution. That is probably why I had no issues with my setup as I have one big “Videos” shared folder and underneath that I have a separate Movies and TV Shows folder.

ScubaBart December 22, 2010 at 4:30 am

Hey Guys,

I spent all night finding out how to rearrange the icons in the “Movies” and “TV Shows” in a way that i get bigger icons, and less on a row. What i want is like 5 icons next to eachother, and 2 rows instead of 4, or something like that?

I remembered from my previous program, Dune Explorer, that i used to just alter the Dune_Folder.txt file to get this going.

I found out where the Dune_Folder.txt are which Zappiti placed, and want to alter those.

But i don’t know what changes to make to the file.
I’ve seen lots of tips at the mpcclub Zappiti thread, but can’t exactly find what i’m looking for..

What would be ideal, is that someone gave me the text i should use in my Dune_Folder.txt files to get this working.

I guess other Zappiti users also want this, because if you don’t have a 60″ screen, the pictures in the Movies and TV show main screens are really to small..

tim January 3, 2011 at 12:23 pm

I can use zappiti with my unraid server. I can use shortcuts on Dune to my Win7 box. But I get the ‘url doesnt work’ when I use zappiti to my win7 box. Does anyone know what to try with windows 7?

Damian January 3, 2011 at 12:26 pm

So you want to play back files stores on your W7 box? What are your settings (i.e. share path, absolute path, etc…)?

tim January 3, 2011 at 2:00 pm

I’ve had the dune for a few weeks. I use shortcuts on the dune to play shares. However since setting up Zappiti, I can only browse up until the point of playback.
folder path: \\green7\media\movie
absolute path: smb://green7/media/movie

green7 is the win7 name

tim January 3, 2011 at 2:02 pm

I’ve shared my folder with ‘everyone’

Bart de Leppet January 3, 2011 at 2:11 pm

Leave the second area empty, there when you have that line with smb in it..

tim January 3, 2011 at 2:16 pm

leave the absolute path empty? I’m not sure what you’re asking me to do.

Bart de Leppet January 3, 2011 at 2:28 pm

Leave the absolute path empty..

tim January 3, 2011 at 2:34 pm

After doing that, zappiti says it must be a sub-folder of my share folder. My share folder is on a different drive.

ScubaBart January 3, 2011 at 2:52 pm

Your share folder should be \\green7\media
and your movies folder path needs to be \\green7\media\movies

tim January 3, 2011 at 4:10 pm

ok so I did that and left my absolute path ‘smb:’ When I go on the dune and browse to the movie, there’s no playback and no ‘url’ msg. It just does nothing. I think I dont understand how to setup zappiti up on the same pc as the shares. Zappiti works fine on the unraid share from another box though.

ScubaBart January 3, 2011 at 6:45 pm

Try again and leave your absolute path EMPTY.
Not even “smb:”, leave it blank

tim January 3, 2011 at 7:27 pm

Ok leaving absolute path blank did it. Thank you.
But how do I put 3 different shares on separate drives of my desktop into zappiti. Is there a way to create one share. I thought that by putting in absolute paths in zappiti, I can include all the shares I might have on my desktop pc.

ScubaBart January 3, 2011 at 7:30 pm

I don’t know how to fix this, maybe someone else knows?

tim January 3, 2011 at 7:54 pm

Thanks for the help. I’ll keep reading up and trying. I read someone had a problem with their setup on their 64bit install and it worked when they tried using absolute path on their 32bit pc.

tim January 3, 2011 at 8:02 pm

I just changed share path to my usb flash drive and now using absolute path with ‘smb:’ works. It seems using AP on the same pc doesnt work, but running dune with usb does work.

Verdi January 27, 2011 at 12:11 am

hi damian,

another question if you don’t mind.

is it possible to install Zappiti into the internal storage (USB) on the Dune Smart D1?

i have used “dune_service_init_system_storage.dsf” to initialize the system storage using the internal storage mentioned above.

Damian January 27, 2011 at 5:41 am

Hi Verdi,

Once you set up the USB as internal storage you can no longer use it (it will only be used for System activities by the dune such as shortcuts, BD Live, etc…)

Ferro3 January 28, 2011 at 5:15 am

Hi there
I’m using zappiti with a Dune max since one month. Everything was fine until I splitted my “movies” shares in two shares “movies” and “movies2″.
I’m no more able to play iso files under the “movies2″ share through the Zappiti interface. The msg I get is url not found, while the original share is still available. The Zappiti file loaded in the main screen of the Max is located in the ‘movies’ share.
Any idea?

Damian January 28, 2011 at 5:20 am

Can you give more details on your split? For example I have a main Videos Shared folder. Under this folder I have several folders (Movies HD, Movies SD, etc…) and I have Zappiti pointing to each folder separately. Is this your setup as well?

Ferro3 January 28, 2011 at 6:07 am

Hi Damian
I have exactly the same set up: a “Multimedia” share, with different shares under. Zappiti is pointing to each folder as you say. Where to you keep the zappiti file used by Dune?

Damian January 28, 2011 at 6:28 am

I keep the Zappiti jukebox under my Videos Share as well. So my setup:

Videos Shared ->
—> Movies HD
—> Movies SD
—> TV Shows
—> Zappiti Jukebox

Ferro3 January 28, 2011 at 1:08 pm

I tried to move the jukebox file upstair, but no change. I can access one share but not the other. These are my absolute path:
smb://[nas name]/Multimedia/Movies
smb://[nas name]/Multimedia/Movies2
one is working the other, when trying to play an iso I get a “no such file or directory” message

Ferro3 January 28, 2011 at 1:21 pm

I think I saw the problem. I took a look in the jukebox database and I found a txt file which has this instruction line:

It seems to me that the number is erroneusly converted in a subdir. I’ll try changing the share name.

Ferro3 January 28, 2011 at 3:27 pm

changed the share name from Movies2 to MovieAA and….it worked!
Don’t use numbers for naming your shares.

Damian January 28, 2011 at 3:34 pm

Interesting, thanks for sharing. Now go enjoy some movies!!!

pavlos January 29, 2011 at 1:44 am

Damian January 29, 2011 at 5:15 am

Try uninstalling Zappiti. After it has been uninstalled, make sure you delete the local files as well (Should be in your User/AppData/Local folder). After that reinstall and hopefully it will be working again

pavlos January 29, 2011 at 3:36 pm

Hello thank you for your reply…
Sorry, can’t find AppData/Local folder to delete local files.
Tried to uninstall and install again but nothing. I even installed previous update, but also nothing.
Any other suggestions?

Thanx again

Damian January 29, 2011 at 3:40 pm

AppData is a hidden folder. It should be under your User/Pavlos folder

pavlos January 29, 2011 at 3:44 pm

I found them in folders such as Zappiti Resourses and Zappiti. When I deleted them… a miracle: Zappiti opened!
Now I’m trying to do everything (tag my video files) from the beginning…
Thanx again.

pavlos February 9, 2011 at 2:13 am

Hello everybody.

Does anybody know why the audio of the new Dune Smart H1 – that does play DTS HD Master Audio – when playing untouched Blurays like Baraka is frequently interrupted, problem that does not occur when playing the Bluray on Dolby Digital sound?

Something Else: Does anybody know if there is a way or a hardware available for the Dune H1 to play also 3D Bluray iso (although it does support 3DReal by software)?

And the last one: Is there a way to have chapters when playing mkv and avi files?

Damian Perez February 9, 2011 at 4:46 am

I have the D1 and have had zero issues with DTS(MA), what firmware are you running?

The Dune players do not support 1080p 3D. This is a hardware limitation and unfortunately you won’t see this working until Dune players released with the sigma 89xx chip is released

As far as chapters, right now the Dune does not support. Honestly it is dissappointing as just about every player supports this and it should be an easy fix

Sjef January 29, 2011 at 6:58 am

I do have the same problem. Zappiti is only running one time. I did uninstal, deletes local files, even all registry entrys. Tried it with two different versions ( ans A second time Zappiti won’t run. BUT the is a Zappiti task running in the task manager.
Some guru there who knows what’s going on?

Eugene January 29, 2011 at 8:53 am

Same here, downloaded the installer. When finish installed, i was able to launch it. After that, i can’t no longer launch it. Every time i click on it, nothing happens. On my task manager, it is running. Please help. I am running it on a windows 7 32bit system.

Bob February 1, 2011 at 11:35 am

And the same here….
Just stopped working on my WHS. I also tried installing Zappiti on my laptop which is running Windows 7 x64 and the same happens.

I can run Zappiti once then thats it. Just will no longer open.

I have tried everything but to no avail…

Is there any other software that is similar for Dune Player?

Eugene February 1, 2011 at 9:57 pm

I manage to get it working, temporarily though.

Every time i finish with Zappiti and closed it, just go backup a copy of the C:\Users\Eugene\AppData\Local\Zappiti folder.

Before you fun Zappiti again, delete the C:\Users\Eugene\AppData\Local\Zappiti folder and run it again. It will start but this time all the config is lost. Now with the program running, copy and paste the old config into the new Zappiti folder. Run scan again and all the data files are back.

Only thing you need to reconfigure are the paths. Other than that, all the scans are intact. Let’s hope there will be an update to get this fixed.

Damian February 2, 2011 at 5:21 am

Man that sucks you would have to go through that step each time. I have no o idea what the issue is but since several people are having the same problem hopefully the Zappiti developers are aware and working to resolve.

Sjef February 1, 2011 at 11:49 am

I stopped with it. Nobody knows al solution. I swapped to yaDIS. The new version looks nice to. Look at; or download the latest version at

Damian February 1, 2011 at 12:03 pm

Yeah, I have no clue what the issue could be, possibly a corrupt Microsoft Framework 3.5? yaDIS 2.0 is on my list to do a writeup on

Eugene February 1, 2011 at 9:59 pm

Thanks for the alternative! :))

Sjef February 1, 2011 at 3:51 pm

No, I do have MS framework 4 under W7….or it is version 4

Sylvester Lauritsen February 2, 2011 at 5:30 am

Having the same problems here, that people are refering to :(

Michel February 2, 2011 at 3:42 pm

Here also the same problem :-(

Hopefully a fast fix for it!

Damian February 2, 2011 at 3:47 pm

I see several people have posted this issue on MPCClub, and I imagine there are others having the same issue, so hopefully this gets back to the developers quick.

I am testing out yaDIS 2.0 now and hopefully can get a writeup together soon enough so we have documentation of an alternative. MyMovies doesn’t have TV support yet so at least for me it is not an alternative yet

Damian February 4, 2011 at 9:18 am

For those looking at yaDIS 2.0, I just posted my writeup:

Sylvester Lauritsen February 5, 2011 at 7:42 am

Found a way to “fix” the bug. Worked for me.

Quoting from mpcclub

“UPDATE: I tracked my issue down to the SplashScreen.png file in the same directory as the database. Mine ended up being 0 bytes in size and this causes Zappiti to throw a wobbly on startup and just sit int he background forever. In my case I just copied any old png file I had over the top and all is now good, alebit with a different splash screen… “

pavlos February 13, 2011 at 7:12 am

I bought the new Dune HD Smart H1 with 2TB HDD.
Only there is a problem when playing TrueHD files or DTS Master Audio files from Bluray iso and Bluray in general: the sound on my Marantz SR6003 comes and goes for a few seconds.
Have You any idea what is the problem. I tried everything on the settings in both Dune and Marantz but… nothing.
Could it be that there is something wrong with the Dune?
I would apreciate an answer.

Thank You

Pavlos Agiannidis

Damian February 13, 2011 at 7:49 am

So all your files are stored on the internal 2TB HDD, correct? Are you using the latest beta firmware? Have you ever had trouble with DTS(MA)/TrueHD on your Marantz before?

pavlos February 13, 2011 at 12:43 pm

Hello, thanx for answering. Yes all my files are in my HDD and I have the latest beta firmware installed and no I hadn’t had any problem with True HD with my Marantz. And I don’t have the same problem with Blurays.

What do you think is the matter (probably with Dune)?

Thanx again,

Damian February 13, 2011 at 3:22 pm

So when you play an actual BluRay disc you don’t have the issue with the Dune H1, only when you play a BluRay rip on the 2TB hard drive? If so could possibly be an issue with teh hard drive, do you by chance have an external drive you could connect to the H1 to see if you get the same result?

Beze February 22, 2011 at 12:06 pm

hi everyone,

I am a complete noob in the movie jukeboxworld and I installed Zappiti for the first time.

“Next up is possibly the most confusing part and where most people have problems. You need to specify the “Rewrite absolute path when exporting”. This will tell Zappiti how the Dune will play back the video files. ”

Okay, here I am having problems: my movies are stored on a 2T external drive, connected by USB to the Dune. Another external 1T drive is used for series.

How shuold I define this absolute path and is it possible to use Zappiti for several external drives at the same time? How should this be defined?

thx in advance!

Trexton February 24, 2011 at 9:59 am

Setting the “Rewrite absolute path when exporting” was a real pain in the a**.

But my problem now is that Zappiti does not care about the folder names the movise are in, but only looks at the file name.

Does anyone now how to fix that?

On my HDD the folder names are always correct, but I never bothered changing the filenames. That said, I now have to identify everithing manually.

Also, what to do with movies that are split into two parts?

Beze February 24, 2011 at 10:58 am

try to use Yadis, after a week of struggeling with Zappiti, Yadis was installed and working prefectly after 30 min -)

pavlos February 25, 2011 at 12:45 am

Thanx for the tip

I tried installing yaDIS too and it works. But there must be a problem with where or how I put the interface data. I tried to put the interface file (a new file opened autopmatically!) in my HDD disc on Dune. After I exporeted my files to dune from yaDIS, I have to go to this yaDIS file to see my movies and series information. But when I click opn them to play them from the information and pics interface…nothing. The don’t work this way. And I have to click and open them from the list on my HDD on dune or from the list of my hard drive. Is there some solution to this?

Thanx again

Jefe February 25, 2011 at 2:37 am

I think it’s time to check out for the yaDIS forum. Your answer(s) are there!

Maarten February 25, 2011 at 1:31 pm

Hi Damian,

I read above that you also have your “family video’s” running. I just installed my D1, but it isn’t playing my own movies. I shot them with a Canon DV-camera and captured them using Windows Live Capture.

Are you familiair with problems like these and is there an easy solution?

Damian February 25, 2011 at 4:04 pm

Hi Maarten,

Do you know what the video codec is? I know t he Dune and many other players will not play motion JPEG which many cameras use

Maarten February 28, 2011 at 4:04 am

Hi Damian,

You are correct. It seems this is indeed MJPEG en a lot of other players don’t support this either.

During my google-ing I found “Xmedia Recode”, which can convert all my movies easily (in batch) to a filetype that is supported bij de Dune. Problem is that there are so much options… That it is hard to find out which one doesn’t affects the quality to much… :)

If you, or anybody else reading this, could update me on ‘the best’ filetype on the Dune. I understand that this has a lot to do with the source quality… I filmed it all on 720 x 576.

And if there is an other (easier) tool to achieve this… al tips are welcome :)

I have a question. I bought the Dune HD Duo, but is incomming.
These days I’m working with Zappiti and internal 2TB HDD.
Is correct to copy the Zappiti folders in the internal HDD?
My folders are: Movies – Movie Folder – movie.mkv. It’s correct?
TV Shows – Show Folder – Season – chapter.mkv
_zappiti folder
zappiti folder

Zappiti for the moment is working fine, and I pass the Zappiti folders to the internal HDD but I’m afraid that all this work can be wrong :(
Please, anybody can tell me if this configuration is correct?

Ferdie March 24, 2011 at 7:27 am

I notice some of the synopsis is getting cut at the end of the sentence, how to correct this issue.

Sadhana March 31, 2011 at 3:25 am

I had zappiti working brilliantly untill i added some more movies and exported out to Dune’s attached ext seagate drive
after trying to get it working for a while, I decided to reinstall it.
I got rid of all the files on the external drive-uninstalled and reinstalled the later version
Now zappiti opens but with a blank screen-no options, nothing except black screen?
Why is this?I havea usb attached to Dune for config and 1TB Seagate ext drive for storage

Damian March 31, 2011 at 8:42 am

Not sure what could have happened. Did you by chance install Turbo Tax, for some reason that seems to cause issues with people?

Marty April 1, 2011 at 5:40 pm

I am 99% of the way there but cannot see the “Add to Main screen” option or another other option for the shortcut step. I have USB storage setup and can see all the underlying Zappiti files under the _zappiti folder. When I select either that folder or the last folder in the Share path below and execute the Pop-up menu button on the Dune remote, I do not see an option for “Add to Main Menu”. I see Copy and Mark options, but no way to Paste to the Main screen if I select them.

Share Path: K:\MLR\Videos\Utilities\Dune
The K drive is an external hard drive attached via USB to my office computer. The MLR folder is shared across the network.

Thanks, Marty

Damian April 15, 2011 at 6:21 am

Hi Marty,

You need to initialize system storage first before you can add a shortcut to the main menu

Marty May 16, 2011 at 4:15 pm

I had already initialized the system storage before doing this. I have re-initialized the storage 4 times and have yet to see the option to add a shortcut at the _zapitti or zapitti folder level. There must be something else wrong in the setup, although I can see all the zapitti files on my Network Browser of the Dune.

I am pretty close to pulling the plug on Zapitti and looking for another option to execute my files on the Dune. I like the Zapitti interface and have 75 movies and 180 TV episodes set up on it, but currently can’t use the program on my Dune, even without the shortcut.

Damian May 17, 2011 at 8:47 am

So when you browse to the Zappiti folder and you the pop up button on your remote there is not an option for a shortcut, or it just won’t add?

Marty May 17, 2011 at 10:48 am

Hello Damian,

Further update. This was a firmware issue. I received my Base HD unit 6 months ago, but it had an 09*** firmware version on it. Once I upgraded to the 110225_1222, the option appeared and I was able to set up the shortcut.

I haven’t been able to play anything through zappiti yet. The launcher message comes up on the Dune when I select an item and Play, but never shows the program/film on the screen. I’ve waited 2 or 3 minutes before giving up. Might be a permission thing, but haven’t looked at in detail yet.

Will post if I have another question.

Damian May 17, 2011 at 10:54 am

Yeah, that is old firmware. I would actually recommend updating to the latest beta firmware which was just released last week.

Sounds like a permission issue or your url paths are incorrect

Shane April 13, 2011 at 4:48 pm

HI im having probs with setting up zappiti on internal 2g drive i have followed all the posts and it plays avi, mkv, and some vob but wont play others any idea???

Damian April 15, 2011 at 6:21 am

Can you play all those files just going through the Dune browser and not Zappiti? Zappiti should have zero impact on playback

Nikhil April 15, 2011 at 1:02 am

Hi i just bought a dune max , and i setup zappiti. hats but while setting it up i had 2 problems.
1) not able to initialize system storage. my dune is not able to identify an empty usb flash drive even though it is attached
2) m not receiving album artwork for any of my movies or tv shows. the info and summary and runtime is all being received with no problem but the jacket and the background just doesn’t show up.
Could sum1 please help me out on this

Damian April 15, 2011 at 6:23 am

1) Try having the Dune format your USB flash drive first, and then initialize

2) Are you using the very latest Zappiti? If so I believe there is a bug that is causing issues with images, so you may want to try and revert back to a previous version

Nikhil April 15, 2011 at 7:55 am

Thanx a ton.
the formatting worked perfectly.
where does zappiti get its metadata from. is it imdb?????
coz i cudnt get the correct info or titles when i searched for even american pie1,2,3,4.
which is surprising coz these are really popular titles

Damian April 15, 2011 at 8:04 am

For TV shows it is TVDB. For movies I am not 100% sure if it is IMDB or TMDB. Not sure what is going on as I have no issues getting Zappiti to scrape properly (and I have the American Pie movies as well)

Ferdie April 18, 2011 at 7:21 am

Can someone help with some of the synopsis is getting cut at the end of the sentence.

My version is

Nikhil April 18, 2011 at 11:24 am

I too am having the same problem. And when I add a tv show folder and scan, neither is anything added nor anything coming up for scraping.

Damian April 18, 2011 at 11:26 am

@ Ferdie/Nikhil,

Can you guys try the latest Zappiti which was just released (2690):

I am actually still running a version maybe 4 or 5 versions older and have no problems, so I haven’t bothered upgrading

Ferdie April 18, 2011 at 12:18 pm

Hi Damian,
Thanks for the reply, if I will upgrade to this version (2690) do I need to redo all my movies again? Or do I just need to upgrade without un-installing the previous version?

Thanks Again

Damian April 18, 2011 at 12:20 pm

You should not have to redo anything as it should simply carry over your current data. If you want to be on the safe side make a copy/backup of the database file first before upgrading

Ferdie April 18, 2011 at 12:57 pm

Got updated, but still same it’s getting cut at the end, is there a way to change the font size of the synopsis data? I try to change the title font size it works the synopsis is complete but it will be very small on the title of the movie.
Thanks again

Ferdie April 18, 2011 at 12:29 pm

Thanks, I’ll try and return back with a feedback.

Nikhil April 23, 2011 at 10:44 pm

Zappiti still having trouble with my tv shows. When I add and scan nothing comes up in # to Scrape. Can someone please help me out on this.

Damian April 24, 2011 at 5:04 am

How are your tv shows set up, I have no issues with my tv shows, and I am constantly adding to

Clayton April 23, 2011 at 11:39 pm

I am really struggling to get this working, please give me some advise.
In have an HP Mediasmart EX490 and Dune HD Max.
I can get the Zappiti interface working only by setting the share path to the Dune HDD
Using this i can view the GUI and movies etc. When i select a movie it will not play (plays ok from the Network browser).
Folder path is \\HOMESERVER\Videos\Dune Videos\Movies
Rewrite Abs is smb://HOMESERVER/Videos/Dune Videos/Movies
If i try to put the Zappiti into the Video folder on the Mediasmart i can’t find it when browsing on the Dune (where is the “File Browser”?).
Please help. Been on this 2 days already.

Damian April 24, 2011 at 5:33 am

So to confirm, all your movies are on your EX490, but you want to store the Zappiti index on an internal drive in your Dune HD Max?

As far as the File Browser, did you set up a shortcut on your Dune to access your videos share? Did you set up smb on your EX490?

Clayton April 24, 2011 at 10:42 am

I now have managed to browse to my folders (smb Home group) i needed to enable guset account.
So now i have the Zappiti folders in //HOMESERVER/Videos/Dune Videos
In this folder i also have my Movies Folder, TV Shows Folder.
Still getting an error when trying to play a movie from Zappiti gui.
Current config is:
Share Path \\HOMESERVER\Videos\Dune Videos
Folder path \\HOMESERVER\Videos\Dune Videos\Movies
Rewrite Abs //HOMESERVER/Videos/Dune Videos/Movies

Any ideas?
Thanks for you previous reply.

Damian April 24, 2011 at 11:11 am

Your share path is where you want to store your Zappiti jukebox. Try this, under Dune Videos create a new folder called Dune Zappiti. This is where you will export your Zappiti jukebox to. You config should then look like this:

Share Path \\HOMESERVER\Videos\Dune Zappiti
Folder path \\HOMESERVER\Videos\Dune Videos\Movies
Rewrite Abs smb://HOMESERVER/Videos/Dune Videos/Movies

In your rewrite path if you have a username/password you must include it. I don’t use for my guess account, here is how I set up smb:

This should get everything working for you. Let me know how it goes

Clayton April 24, 2011 at 12:38 pm

That did the trick.
I did not setup smb though. I entered it exactly as you wrote.
Thanks very much for your help.
I can now enjoy the rest of the Easter holiday.

Damian April 24, 2011 at 12:51 pm

Brilliant mate! My guess it was a permission issue. Although smb does work by default on the EX490 the guide I put together helps ensure your permissions are correct. Have a Happy Easter

Nikhil April 24, 2011 at 8:36 am

What do you mean by how are they set up? If you mean how they are organized, all episodes of a season in a folder and the various season folders in a main folder.

Damian April 24, 2011 at 10:40 am

Yes, so you have a main TV Show folder. Under that folder you have a folder for each TV show. Finally under each TV Show folder you have a Season folder with each episode (i..e S01E01, S01E02, etc…)

When you added you TV Folder to Zappiti I assume you set the source as TV Shows?

Nikhil April 24, 2011 at 12:38 pm

I think my setup is wrong. I haven’t put all the seasons of a show under one folder. is this the problem?? Haven’t tried it yet. Thanks for the help.

Damian April 24, 2011 at 12:52 pm

I can’t remember exactly how Zappiti prefers. I just find that the best practice is to have an individual folder for each season under each shows main folder. In zappiti then you just need to make sure when you add your main TV Show folder you set it up as TV content

Nikhil April 24, 2011 at 1:26 pm

When you say set it as tv content you mean add as a tv show folder right??

Damian April 25, 2011 at 8:50 am

Correct, in the Zappiti config when you set up your TV Show folder you assign it as TV Shows

Nikhil April 25, 2011 at 9:05 am

Everything worked fine, I was adding the sub folder when I had to add the main folder. Is it possible to add cover and fan art manually. Because zappiti is not able to recognize a few.

Damian April 25, 2011 at 9:11 am

Yes, if you right click on a cover in Zappiti you should see an option to edit or change. Select this and it will allow you to add your own art

Nikhil April 25, 2011 at 9:35 am

I recently added my library all over again because of some shifting of files here and there and set all my movies for scraping. When it was done there were a few movies which didnt have it’s cover or background. Before the whole re adding these movies had everything. Do you know what the problem is???

Damian April 25, 2011 at 10:06 am

There is an issue with TMDB which Zappiti uses to get artwork

Nikhil April 25, 2011 at 9:53 am

I could not find the option to add manually. I got the edit and change option but no manual adding

Damian April 25, 2011 at 10:09 am

Are you talking about adding an actual TV show that did not get added, or adding artwork?

Nikhil April 25, 2011 at 12:57 pm

No I’m talking about only artwork. So I think it must be relating the problem with TVDB. Thanks for all the help.

Nikhil April 25, 2011 at 1:03 pm

Sorry TMdb not Tvdb. And I don think I’ll try for manually adding the artwork. I’ll just wait for the problem to be fixed. Thanks again.

Loney April 27, 2011 at 4:40 am

Is it possible to change the dune main screen theme???
If so can someone please help me out with a link or site name.

Damian April 27, 2011 at 6:28 am

You can change the background picture if that is what you mean by theme.

Cyrus The Virus May 13, 2011 at 12:59 pm

Damian, i once more need youre expertise.
I just got a NAS up and running today. Everything goes smooth. Installed it correctly in zapitti. Add one movie to try, and zapitti finds the new movie. Scrapes and collects all te images.
Then i see zapitti sees 32 movies (on my PC)
When i export to my dune the last movie will not be added??? When i count the movies in zapitti on the dune it only has 31 movies. Where is the 32nd??? and new movie on my nas???
Pls help me, much apriciate it.

Cy the Vi

Damian May 17, 2011 at 8:45 am

Did you try deleting all your exported files and re exporting?

Cyrus The Virus May 17, 2011 at 10:28 am

Yup, i did. I also found out that the zappiti folder is also located on my nas, there all movies are exposed and can i start all movies. Pretty strange aint it?
Anyways, i can live with it right now, cause i put a quicklink in my favorites folder on my dune.

RMerlano May 26, 2011 at 2:34 pm

Hi Damian!
I´m new in media servers technology and I´ve followed your guide because I didn´t know where to start !

I setup all the stuff in the computer, but I have 2 questions?
1) How to install Zappiti in mi Dune HD Max?
2) When I export to dune, I found files in the location share in my internal hard disk. How may I to take it to the Dune? What I need to do exactly?

I hope your great help.
thank you!

Damian May 26, 2011 at 2:42 pm

Well, glad you found your way here :-)

1) You don’t install Zappiti in your HD Max. What you do is export your Zappiti index to a share or drive that your Dune has access to. You then navigate to the Zappiti index folder which will launch Zappiti (the easier option is to add a zappiti shortcut to your Dune menu, you need to make sure you have system storage initialized first)

2) This question goes along with #1. I guess the question for you, t ell me a little bit more about your setup (i.e. where is your media stored that you will be playing back on the Dune)

RMerlano May 26, 2011 at 2:55 pm

Thank´s for you quick answer!

Please apologize my little knowledge about it but, when you talk about a share, I must to do something in the computer to allow to dune to reach the share?
The Zappiti index is created in the export?
How may I transport the data exported to my Dune?

My current config consists in:
PC with Windows Vista.
The share (specified in Zappiti config) is C:\Data\Zappiti Test
USB External disk Western Digital 1TB where all the movies (720p and 1080p) are stored.
I use store_label to config the absolute path (storage_label://My book/HD Movies)

Please! Be patient with me, I´m really new in this topic.

Damian May 26, 2011 at 3:16 pm

No worries, we all have to start somewhere, no need to apologize.

One other quick question. Your videos are stored on your USB External Disk. Is this going to be connected to your PC to stream or is it going to be connected directly to your Dune?

RMerlano May 26, 2011 at 3:30 pm

“Is this going to be connected to your PC to stream or is it going to be connected directly to your Dune?”
I´ll try both. I think for usability the external disk should be connected to the PC, but if the performance is not good, I´ll connect directly to Dune.

Damian May 26, 2011 at 3:40 pm

I would recommend connecting directly to the Dune but it depends on how often you plan on moving files to/from the USB drive. Two main reasons why I recommend this (1) By connecting to the Dune you are not forced to keep your PC on just to watch a movie and (2) you take networking out of the equation by connecting directly to the Dune. If you connect your USB drive directly to the Dune you could export your Zappiti jukebox to the same USB drive as well.

If you connect directly to your PC I assume your PC and Dune are all networked? Is your PC set up to share drives?

RMerlano May 26, 2011 at 3:47 pm

I´ll take your recomendation. I´ll connect the USB drive directly to the Dune.
So, with this I´ll put the share on it.

Ok, then when I have the share on the USB drive, I make the export and I´m going to have the data exported to the disk.
What have I to do after that? Any option in Dune to take the information? How the Dune will know about Zappiti?

Damian May 26, 2011 at 4:24 pm

Is your Dune connected to the network? If so when you connect your USB drive to your Dune you should still be able to see it from your PC and transfer files to/from. The transfer speed will be much slower then if you connect yo your PC to do your transfers though. What I would recommend, make a folder called “Videos” in the root of your USB drive. Under the Videos folder make a folder called “Movies”, this Movies folder is where all your movies will be stored. Under the same “Videos” folder make a folder called something like “Zappiti”. This is where you are going to export your Zappiti Index from the PC. When connected to the Dune you simply navigate to this Zappiti folder and it will launch Zappiti on the Dune

RMerlano May 26, 2011 at 4:29 pm

Ah! Excelent! Yes, both PC and Dune are connected to network.

So, just I have to browse to the folder share and ready!

I´ll do a try!

Thank you very much!!

Damian May 26, 2011 at 4:33 pm

Hopefully that is enough to get started. If you have any other questions feel free to ask here or you can ask as well on the dedicated AVSForum thread where there are a lot of people there who will help (myself included)

RMerlano May 26, 2011 at 4:34 pm

Great! I´ll visit the thread and check it.

Pete May 27, 2011 at 3:05 pm

I don’t have a Dune yet, but I’m browsing my options and I like the way Zappiti works — but I’d like to explain my situation and get some advice:

I’m primarily looking at the Smart H1, because of the hot swappable drive bay. We have about 30 1TB hard drives with our Blu-Ray collection on them (approximately 35 movies per HDD).

Can you tell me if the following is possible…

I use Zappiti to catalogue my entire library of 30+ hard drives (900+ movies, Tv shows etc.) and have the information saved on an SD card that is then put in the Dune.

With no HDD in the player, I can still browse the cover art and info of my entire collection. When I click on a cover and go into the film info, I can have it marked what HDD number that movie is on, then get that hard drive and put it in the drive bay. Press play to start that particular movie.

Is that possible, or am I completely misinterpreting the way it works?

I’m going to have three Dunes in different rooms, and I’d prefer not to do it via networking. Mainly because one will be dedicated to kids movies, and will have a completely different catalogue of movies and shows. Plus, we’re in a rental house and I don’t want to run wired connections to the other two rooms, and wireless is not reliable here.

Damian May 27, 2011 at 4:56 pm

Pete – Correct. Using an SD card (or many people use a USB thumb drive) you can browse your entire library without any of the drives where the movies are stored being active (of course actual playback would require the drives to be active).

Now as far as three different rules, there is a problem. Zappiti only allows you to create one jukebox (so you can’t create multiple jukeboxes). The way around this, if you have multiple PCs install Zappiti on multiple PCs, and for each PC you can create a separate jukebox (so PC1 you can create the jukebox for the family room, PC2 you can create the jukebox for the kid’s room, etc…). Obviously this is far from ideal and would be a nice feature to implement down the road, but right now this isn’t possible.

Christoph June 7, 2011 at 9:31 am

im thinking about buying a dune smart d1 player, i want to install Zappiti on it. But i do have some questions:

1. Can i use Zappiti on the dune smart d1?
2. Do i have to power on the pc everytime i wanna watch a movie? or can i leave the pc off and i use the internal hdd of the dune drive?

Damian June 7, 2011 at 9:54 am

1. Yes, works on all Dunes (I have a BD Prime and Smart D1)

2. Your PC only needs to be on to create the Zappiti jukebox. Your PC does not need to be on to actually view the jukebox or play back your movies (assuming that your Zappiti jukebox or videos are not stored on your PC)

Christoph June 8, 2011 at 2:38 am

Thank you for the quick answer.

No, i want to store the files on the internal Hdd of the Smart d1.

Damian June 8, 2011 at 4:30 am

Then sounds like you should be set :-)

Dev Anand June 8, 2011 at 2:22 am

I have a Dune DB Prime 3.0 Blueray. I have a huge collection of English Moives on my External HD which I watch the movies through Dune. Recently i have downloaded latest version Zappiti software and able to download coverpages and story story synopsis into my External HD. Now i can only able to watch the cover page and story synopsis on TV but cannot play movie from there. I have to go back to the folders and play the movies.

Is Zappiti software is only to view cover page and story synopsis or I missed something while configuring? All my movie files are in .mkv an .avi. Please advice.

Damian June 8, 2011 at 4:31 am

It sounds like your settings in Zappiti are incorrect. When you launch Zappiti from your Dune once you select a movie it should begin to play.

Can you confirm the path settings you have for Zappiti?

Dev Anand June 8, 2011 at 5:06 am

Thank you for your quick response. I have done the following procedures.
First i connected External Hard Disc to my computer(Where all my media is).My Hard Disc name is Dev Anand – Movies. The path given is.
Share Path: H:\mymovies\Avatar
Folder Path: I:\mymovies\Avatar
Rewrite Path: I:/mymovies/Avatar
(mymovies is a main folder wherein i had created a seperate folder for each movie)
With the above settings i can able to download all the movies information on my HD. Later when i connect HD to Dune I can able to see the information but not able to play.

Damian June 8, 2011 at 6:08 am

Your paths look incorrect, in particular your rewrite path. The issue is you are using letter drives (i.e. I:) which is what your PC assigns when you connect your external drive. However, when your drive is connected to your Dune it does not understand what the I: drive is, so nothing will play

Damian June 8, 2011 at 6:12 am

Here is a link that will explain better on how to set up y our paths for attached drives:

Dev Anand December 2, 2012 at 2:44 am

Until now my Zappitti is working very fine. I keep all my movies on external hard disc. Recently I have upgraded Zappitti software new version. In new version all the features are working except movie is not playing when we proceed further on selected movie synopsis on my Dune player. I tried many times with all alternatives but still facing a problem.

Request your help in this.

Dev Anand

Damian December 4, 2012 at 5:36 am

Still having issues? It sounds like possibly your player path got messed up? Did you re confirm the settings? Otherwise possibly try doing a full re export of your Zapp database (instead of incremental)

Dev Anand June 10, 2011 at 12:12 pm

After two days of hard working I finally secceeded in establishing the proper settings and my Zappiti is working fine. One of my friend sent me the following link which may be useful to others who is facing the similar setting problems on external hard discs.

I sincerely thank you for all your support and advice.

MacHans June 17, 2011 at 2:33 pm

I’m having a problem scraping details and pictures for a number of series. With well know series, like airwolf and Heroes, to name a few, it works fine, however, with 1 it does not work. The show is on the website, I can lookup details on, but when scraping nothing shows up. When going to details or to pictures, nothing shows up neither when I push the TheTVDB button.

What can I try more.

Thanks MacHans

Wayne June 22, 2011 at 9:57 am

Damien, your guide has become an invaluable resource for English-speaking Zappiti users, including myself. After reading your guide I felt very comfortable setting up Zappiti and using it for the first time.

However, there is one things I’d like to mention for clarification because I wouldn’t want a misunderstanding to dissuade potential users away from Zappiti.

You have said several times that Zappiti only allows you to create one database on your PC and that’s just isn’t the case. Creating and managing multiple databases is simple, albeit with one caveat.

To create a new empty database with default icons and categories, select a folder in the Configuration folder box (Step 1) by browsing to it with the browse button. You can do this repeatedly to create multiple databases in different folders. If you want a version of your current database with the same categories and icons you’ve already set up, you can first copy everything from your current database folder into a new folder and then browse to it in the Configuration folder box.

After you have more than one database set up you can drop down your list of databases in the Configuration folder box and select which database you would like to switch to.

The caveat is that the current versions of Zappiti have a problem with redisplaying your settings, icons, and categories when switching databases. So as soon as you switch databases, exit Zappiiti, wait a few seconds for it to finish closing (or more if you have a slow PC), and then reopen Zappiti.

I have two databases containing different content, categories, icons, input folders, and, importantly, unique output folders.

I hope this helps someone.

Clayton June 23, 2011 at 12:25 am

Anyone know how to add another category i.e. Music Videos?
I have All My Files, Movies, TV Shows, Recent and Categories.

Damian June 23, 2011 at 5:00 am

If you are talking about on the main screen you cannot add another category. However, you can add a new genre (Music Videos) and then have that shortcut appear directly on your Dune UI when it loads (so you don’t even have to go first into the Zappiti Main Menu)

Nikhil June 23, 2011 at 1:21 am

I recently changed the location of my movies on my NAS. So now i cant launch my movies from zappiti coz obviously the path is wrong. Is there someway of changing the path of only the launcher??

Damian June 23, 2011 at 4:58 am
Nikhil June 26, 2011 at 12:23 am

Stupid question to ask but how do i upgrade zappiti without losing my data???

Damian June 26, 2011 at 4:47 am

Just install the new Zapitti over the old one and you won’t lose your data. You can always back up your database as well

Dev Anand August 29, 2011 at 2:23 am

All my movies are working fine with Zappitti software. But i have a serious problem on sequels. For example. Rocky series, only Rocky will open on Dune and the rest names Rocky I, Rocky II …. are not working. The same applies Die Hard 1, 2… like that. Can you help me in this. i tried all the options but could not succeed.

Damian August 29, 2011 at 3:09 am

What is your folder structure for these?

As far as backing up your Zappiti database under your UserName/AppData/Local/Zappiti folder

Dev Anand August 30, 2011 at 12:12 am

I got it. Thank you.

One more question. Once i back my existing data files, can i create an another folder on Zappitti?

Also could you please let me know how to solve the sequel problem?

Damian August 30, 2011 at 3:02 am

I think you can create another Zappiti folder but I have never tried. Scroll through the comments section here as I think someone posted on how to do.

As far as your problem you never answered my question on your folder structure for these

Dev Anand August 29, 2011 at 2:30 am

Also could you please let me know how to back my movie data on Zappitti?

Dev Anand August 30, 2011 at 3:13 am

ooohh. Sorry. My folder structure is:

Share path: J:\MDB ONE\DIE HARD 2
Folder path: J:\MDB ONE\DIE HARD 2
Absolute path: storage_label://ANAND/MDB ONE/DIE HARD 2

(ANAND is the HDD label and MDB ONE is the main folder)

Damian August 30, 2011 at 3:16 am

Try pointing to the root folder and not the specific movie folder. Also, I assume in your Die Hard 2 folder you simply have the Die Hard 2 movie and not other movies?

Share path: J:\MDB ONE
Folder path: J:\MDB ONE
Absolute path: storage_label://ANAND/MDB ONE

Dev Anand August 30, 2011 at 3:26 am

I have many movie folders in MDB ONE folder and DIE HARD 2 folder i have only one movie in the name of DIE HARD 2.

Damian August 30, 2011 at 3:28 am

So wouldn’t you want Zappiti to pick up all your movie folders in MDB ONE? By just pointing to MDB ONE it would do that.

I have never pointed Zappiti to an individual movie folder so I am guessing that is what is causing the issue?

Dev Anand August 30, 2011 at 3:40 am

I will try as per your advice.

Thanks a lot.

Joe July 7, 2011 at 1:15 pm

Damien, this maybe a stupid question to ask, but I am new to all of this so I’ll bite the bullet and ask. Do I download the sytem storage files and copy it to the videos folder where all my movies are located
on my Windows Home Server, or do I copy them to the flash drive?
And If I copy them to the flash drive how do I acess the drive from
dune? Or do i click on the file from the shared folder. sorry if I bothered you with a silly question.

Damian July 7, 2011 at 2:15 pm

I would just put the system storage files in a folder on your WHS that you can access on your Dune. Next plug the USB Drive. When you go into the Dune Main menu you should now see an icon for the attached usb drive. With the USB drive highlighted I think you want to hit the popup button on the remote and have the dune format the usb drive. Then navigate to the system storage file and run

Markus July 9, 2011 at 1:14 pm

i´ve tried to make a shortcut to the main menu. i have the system storage already. but there is no “add to main screen” in the pop up menu!?

asianjabba July 27, 2011 at 1:52 pm

hi Damien
i lost all my settings and i forgot how to put in the configurations for DUNE with zapitti. I am currently using NFS.
my share path is: \\JOE\\Videos
my movie folder is: \\JOE\Videos\Videos

what should my rewrite absolute path when exporting: be?

thank you so much for your time!

Damian July 27, 2011 at 2:00 pm

I think for nfs it would be:

asianjabba July 27, 2011 at 2:15 pm

thanks for the quick response…however when i put nfs://JOE:/Videos/Videos and click on OK, it doesn’t do anything. i just keep pressing OK and nothing happens.

Maurice Flier August 6, 2011 at 7:27 am

For people using YANFOE to get artwork there’s a command to get the backdrop compatible for ZAPPITI.
YANFOE has an option to store the cover art as folder.jpg, but no option to store the fanart/backdrop as backdrop.jpg.

using the following commandline you can COPY the fanart.jpg to backdrop.jpg resulting in movie folders compatible for yamj and ZAPPITI.

Run the command in your base video folder, and it will scan all subfolders for the fanart files and copy them to backdrop files.
forfiles /s /m *.fanart.jpg /c “cmd /c copy @file backdrop.jpg”

Damian August 18, 2011 at 6:31 am

Thanks for the tip Maurice.

Blackadder August 15, 2011 at 4:23 pm

Helle everybody,

I’ve just installed Zappiti on my new DUNE DUO, and it looks like it should look ! Very nice to choose the movie I want to see…..
Only one problem, when I start a movie via the Zappiti interface, the movie ‘stutters’… it’s not played smoothly….
If i choose the same movie via the normal Dune folders, there is no problem….
What am I doing wrong here ?
Thank you for your help !
kind regards,

Damian August 18, 2011 at 6:32 am

Are you still having the same problem? I have not encountered this problem before as there should be no difference in playback.

Blackadder August 18, 2011 at 2:40 pm

Hi Damian,
yes, I still have the same problem.
I have my movies in an ISO format, but I don’t think that should be a problem ?
Best Regards,

Damian August 19, 2011 at 6:11 am

ISO should have no impact. How are you streaming, via SMB?

Blackadder August 19, 2011 at 4:45 pm

To be honest, I don’t know if it’s via SMB….
I have 2 harddisks of each 2TB in my Dune Duo.

Damian August 19, 2011 at 4:59 pm

Oh ok, you have internal disks, you aren’t streaming over a network it sounds like? If so then smb is not being used.Where is your jukebox stored, on one of the internal drives?

Blackadder August 20, 2011 at 6:29 am

the Zappiti file and the ISO files are at this moment on the same hard disk.

Damian August 20, 2011 at 3:37 pm

I don’t use internal drives so don’t know how much I can help. One thing you can check, try playing a movie that is on the same hard drive as Zappiti. Then play a movie that is on the other drive. I would be curious to see if you get stuttering in only one or both instances.

Blackadder August 23, 2011 at 2:43 pm

it’s no difference… in both cases it ‘stutters’….
I don’t know what to do next….

Clayton August 19, 2011 at 3:14 am

My system is working great. So great that i want to set it up for my Father.
He is going to buy a Dune HD Max and i intend to upload content for him via ftp.
Problems start because i am in The Netherlands and he is in the UK.
Can i run his zappiti from the Netherlands (as well as mine)?
I would like it if all he has to do is turn on his dune and find the latest content in Zappiti.
He is 80 years old and cannot set up anything much.

Damian August 19, 2011 at 3:15 am

Does he have a PC at home?

Otherwise you will have a difficult time unless you can create a VPN between his network and yours

Clayton August 19, 2011 at 3:25 am

Yes he has. Running Vista 32

Damian August 19, 2011 at 3:27 am

The easiest thing would probably be just to manage Zappiti separately on his Vista PC. You can just remote in to his PC to update and export the jukebox. I usually update Zappiti remoting in to my PC from work.

Clayton August 19, 2011 at 3:42 am

Yes. I do this already for other things. Maybe I can use another Jukeboand and get it to monitor a Dune folder.

Damian August 19, 2011 at 3:49 am

Yeah, I would recommend doing. You can’t simply copy your Zappiti jukeobox to his network and have it work because your video library paths will be different from his (unless if you are using internal drives for your setup and his that you make sure the drives are labeled the same)

mark August 23, 2011 at 11:47 am

hello, i have zapitti up and running on miy dune hd duo and i used the hdd on the dune to store the films.
when i start zapitti on the dune it works but when i select an avi the movie play’s great and when i select an dvd file it goes in slowmotion every while and then. what can be the problem can anybody help me?
ik installed zapitti on my computer and i selected the right path for the movie’s configuration folder and the share path .and the absolute path when all works but the dvd’s dont run smoothly.helllp please

Damian August 23, 2011 at 12:52 pm

Do you have the same issue with your DVDs if you play on the Dune via the Dune UI (i.e. not Zappiti)?

Blackadder August 23, 2011 at 2:45 pm

isn’t Mark having the same problems I have too ?

Damian August 23, 2011 at 3:04 pm

Yeah, that is what I am thinking. I don’t have a duo and I don’t use internal drives so I am not sure. Did you try moving the Zappiti jukebox to an attached USB thumb drive from your hard drive to see if you get the same issue? It is hard to tell if it is a zappiti issue or dune duo issue, so best to try and narrow down

mark August 23, 2011 at 10:21 pm

Hi fa Ian ,yes it looks like THE Same problemen as blackadder and yes when i play it without zapitti then it works fine .can you specefy what to do with THE zapitti jukebox thanx already

Damian August 24, 2011 at 6:21 am

I have run out of ideas on what the problem could be. I would test out having Zappiti on a separate thumb drive attached to the Dune to see if that fixes the issue. You could also try posting y our question on the MPCClub thread, one of the Zappiti developers (ChristopherCherel) posts there:

mark August 25, 2011 at 4:13 am

damian, what do you mean by zapitti jukebox?? is that the library of zapitti?
can you explain?please

Damian August 25, 2011 at 5:45 am

It the the export library you create that the Dune accesses (so the Zappiti jukebox that you are exporting to your internal hard drive). I would try instead exporting your Zappiti to a USB thumb drive attached to your Dune just to rule out if the issue is having the Zappiti jukebox on the same internal drive as your movies.

mark August 25, 2011 at 2:01 pm

Maurice Flier August 26, 2011 at 3:02 am

Could it be that your USB System storage is small. Recommended size is 2GB. Maybe you are using a (much) smaller stick, or is using a piece of the HDD as system partition. The same disk that’s used for storing the movie and Zappiti?

mark August 27, 2011 at 2:58 am

hi maurice im am using a stick of 2 mb so that must be enough.but you are right ill try to set the export folder on the hdd .ill let you know how that works thanx\greats mark

mark August 29, 2011 at 1:42 am

well, i tried everything but it still doesnt work. i have all the settings right and checked it over and over .
i now have dune explorer installed and that works fine.
so i think it has something to doe with th combination of the dune hd duo with an hdd and zappitti it doenst go .does anybody knows if this problem of the stutter in the next update is taking care of?
i hope the maker sees this discussion to .
greets mark

mark August 30, 2011 at 9:36 am

hello, i have a question,i have deleted the zapitti program because i thougt this was the problem. but now i reinstalled zapitti and it says that it doesnt work anymore.what can the problem be?
can anyone help me?
greets smark

Damian August 30, 2011 at 12:03 pm

Did you back up your db? If so uninstall Zappiti again, and then make sure the Zappiti folder in your C:Programs is deleted (I think it is under HDLand) and that the Zappiti folder in your AppData folder is deleted as well (obviously keep your db to the side). Try to reinstall and see if that works

Torben Rick September 7, 2011 at 11:20 pm

Just great – Thanks :-)

One small Q: Is it possible to instal/run Zappiti from a QNAP NAS?

Damian September 8, 2011 at 6:02 am

Unfortunately not, it must be run from a PC. You can then export the jukebox to any device (QNAP NAS, etc…)

gugs September 9, 2011 at 1:38 pm

I have ripped a dvd which has Part A and Part B. So it creates two folders Part A and Part B within which are the Video_TS folders which contain the individual .vob etc files. How do I pick up this movie from the Zappti movies folder? When I scan it picks up two different parts (scrapes). However, its one film with two parts. Any ideas? Should name the folders in some other way?

Damian September 11, 2011 at 8:46 am

For Part I / Part II movies I just end up joining them into one mkv. I am pretty sure Zappiti can handle multiple parts based on naming but tbh I have never tried

brian September 11, 2011 at 5:02 am

hello, i’ve been using zappti for a while with no probs.
today i thought i’d sort out my tv shows,
i can scan and find them but can’t scrape it just says identification.
example of my folder ; tvshows /fawlty towers/fawlty towers s01e01
what am i doing wrong?

Damian September 11, 2011 at 5:41 am

To confirm, when you added your TV Show folder you marked it as TV Shows in the Zappiti Config, correct? Actually, I just tried getting on and it looks like the site is down, that could be your issue

brian September 11, 2011 at 6:42 am

yes i done the config, the same way i done the movie folder and that works fine, so it’s probley the site..was starting to do my head in..
i’ll keep an eye on and try later…
thanks for the quick responce..TOP MAN

Damian September 11, 2011 at 8:44 am

Yeah, same issue here with TVDB. Hopefully it will be back up soon. Next week is when all the new TV shows start!!!

Shree September 11, 2011 at 6:13 am

Damian, I have been having a similar problem as well.
1. For the TV show (at episode level) Zappiti down loads the title, description, etc (all text) but not the pictures!
2. Also, when Scanning, Zappiti identifies about 250+ items that need to be scrapped, but then suddenly everything resets – nothing scraps!

Your insight will be greatly appreciated!

Damian September 11, 2011 at 8:47 am

(1) Did this problem just start? TVDB is down right now which is causing issues with TV Show updates on Zappiti

(2) Is this just for TV Shows or both TV shows and Movies (i.e. if just TV shows I believe it is the TVDB issue)

Shree September 12, 2011 at 9:22 am

Damian, I upgraded to a newer version of Zappiti, then the problem started. Has been going on for 4 weeks or more! I am wondering if there is a timeout option set in the software and if the response is not coming back from TVDB fast enough, does Zappiti just timeout and quit (and cancel all the remaining scraping tasks)?

On (2) this only happens for the TV shows and so you are correct both problems are connected to TVBD.

Damian September 12, 2011 at 3:24 pm

4 weeks doesn’t sound like a TVDB issue. I also scanned my library with Zappiti last night and I pulled in TV Show info without issue. Try going back to the previous Zappiti version (your previous Zappiti database should be in tact) and see if you get the same issue still

gugs September 11, 2011 at 10:22 am

Thanks Damain, i grouped the two parts and it did the job.

I have one more question that you may be able to provide support for. I have two hard drives, one internal and the other (external) attached USB to the Dune player with media files within each.

I have configured Zappti to scan and Jukebox the films on the internal drive. I created a zappti folder and copied the movies into this folder as the movies must be a sub folder of the defined share path. For example: share path = Y:\zappiti; movies path = Y:\zappti\movies. So the problem I am now facing is how Jukebox the USB drive? It is a separate drive (x:\movies). Zappti does not allow the configuration because this folder is not a sub folder of the share path. So how do you get around this issue? Do you cerate a separate db for the X: drive?

Damian September 12, 2011 at 3:28 pm

Why not just create a subfolder on your X: drive (i.e X:\Zappiti\Movies)?

gugs September 13, 2011 at 7:55 am

Damain I have worked out what needs to be done if you have an internal and external Dune drives. I am using Zappiti version 2.1.

1 First map the drives with the media, e.g. via the Explorer.
2 Pick the folders from the mapped drives in Zappiti (New Movies Folder) by using the drop downs. However, pick them by using ‘My Network Places>Entire Network>Dune>media folder’ rather then mapping the mapped drives (e.g. X:\Movies). Note, Zappiti fills in the the Absolute Path automatically(smb:// I removed ot changed these as below, in my case:

Share Path:

Dune Internal Hard Drive:
Absolute path = removed the one specified by Zappiti, as it is on the Share path i.e. none specified

\\Dune\hard_disk_30b047cdb047986c\Zappiti\TV Shows
Absolute path = removed the one specified by Zappiti, as it is on the Share path i.e. none specified.

External drive connected via USB:
Absolute path = storage_uuid://ba566be2566b9dbf/Movies

NOTE: “Dune\SAMSUNG_” has been removed from storage_uuid on the Absolute Path for the external drive; if you dont do this Zappiti wil play back the media but it will be slow, stutter and it will be unviewable.

Damian thanks for all your help to date.

Damon September 19, 2011 at 10:05 am

I am a new Dune HD Duo owner (and therefore a new Zappitti user). I am using Version
I too am having trouble scraping pictures (artwork) for my films. The TV series work ok-ish. Manually adding the artwork (from the server) individually for each film works. I have loads of films and manually adding isn’t an option.
Can you help with the great picture scrape debate?

asianjabba September 19, 2011 at 10:07 am

you need to manually update the eng-us.xml file in zappiti language folder. use notebad to update it. change the IMDB to TMDB so that way it’s scrapping from tmdb and not imdb. i had that problem too but fixed it right after.

Damon September 19, 2011 at 2:23 pm

Thanks asianjabba that helped.

Hi Damain,

i just bought a Dune D1 recently, my Dune Player did not connect to network, instead i connect it to external 4 bay hardisk encloser thru usb cable.

i’m not sure whether your heard of this Probox 4 Bay Hardisk encloser. it not a NAS but when you plug in to PC, PC can detect all the 4 hardisk.

maybe you can check out more detail at this website.

Since my setup is not connected to network, how can i configure it to use Zappiti or other program to have a Movies Wall?

Please Advice and thank you very much

Damian October 3, 2011 at 2:46 pm

Sorry for the delayed response, got very behind on answering comments. Were you able to resolve your issue?

chinkc October 4, 2011 at 3:42 am

Hi Damian,

Good day to you! so happy to received your reply.
my problem still not solved yet.

i’m a old man who lack of IT knowledge, i will really appreciate if you could guide me.

please let me tell you my setup in more details:-

my home theatre room and Dune Player are at 3rd Floor of my house. and my PC, Router are located at 2nd Floor. From my router i connected a network cable to 3rd Floor and over there i have network switch to Dune and to My 63 inch Plasma 3D TV.

My PC running Windows 7 64bits and my Internet speed is XDSL 20MB download & 20MB Upload.

My Dune D1 connected wired to Netwrok switch and the IP address for my Dune is

i have install a 8GB USB Drive inside the Dune Player and already setup as system storage by Dune Player, but i did not install Hardisk.

currently i’m using a product call Hardisk encloser with 4 bay hardisk and this ensloser come with interface e-SATA & USB 3.0. and i’m using usb connect to my Dune Player, because if i using e-SATA connect to Dune, Dune only recognise 1 hardisk instead of Four Hardisk.

all my 4 hatdisk is 2TB and full with Bluray ISO or BDMV format movies.

i have category each hardisk by “Animation”, “Documantery”, “Western Movies”, “Chinese Movies”

ok..sorry for the long story and now come back to Zappiti problem.

from my PC, under the network group i can see Dune
and i double click the Dune Icon, i can see all my 4 hardisk with name “Animation”, “Documantery”, “Western Movies”, “Chinese Movies”

i can access to the 4 hardisk without problem from my PC.

Now, my question is:-

1. For Share Path, i use C:\Dune HD\Zappiti, can? or should i choose one of the four hardisk who attached to Dune Player? please suggest.

2. why i can’t find the USB driver in dune Player from my PC and only saw 4 hardisk? something wrong?

3. can i export all Zappiti data into this USB dune System Drive? if yes, how to do it? and 8GB enough?

4. when i go to Dune main screen, i saw network Browser and the 4 hadisk. i press pop up manu on the remote to create new Folder, the server what should i key in?

5. folder what should i key in?

6. from dune i browser to network browser -> SMB ->i saw Dune & my PC, but when i choose my pc it show empty even i already share my 2 PC hardisk (Full Share for “everybody”)? why?

please teach me, how can i make the Zappiti work?

look forward to your reply and you can explaint is more detail. thank you and appreciate very much.

Damian October 6, 2011 at 6:55 am

1) Share path is where you want your Zappiti jukebox to be exported to. This is entirely up to you where you do this

2) Once you set up the USB drive as system storage you will not be able to use or see it. You could try partitioning it, something like creating a 2GB partition for system storage and leaving 6GB for file storage

3) Yes you can, see comment above

4) The Dune network browser is finicky. Try instead creating a shortcut to your network share (on the main menu hit the popup button and there should be an option to add a network shortcut)

5) Details of the share you are trying to access. So for example if your share is MyServer/Videos MyServer would be the share name and Videos would be the folder name

6) See previous comments regarding the Dune network browser

Jerry Bens October 5, 2011 at 3:15 pm

Hi Damian,

I can’t figure out why zappati is not downloading the movie’s cover art just the info?…..not quite shure if I am doing something wrong or if it will be all working when I wake up in the morning.

Damian October 5, 2011 at 3:24 pm

Its a bug. Go into the languages.(en).xml file (assuming English is your language) and where you see IMDB change to TMDB

Jerry Bens October 5, 2011 at 7:35 pm

Thanks Damian,

You gave me just enough info to fix the problem of Zappati not retrieving
movie art…….I just had to get permission from the Administrator and use notepad to change an I to a T and everything was good…… are defintly the goto guy for answers.

Damian October 6, 2011 at 6:39 am

Good stuff, glad you got it working. Just remember that until this is fixed every time you update Zappiti you will need to make this change.

Jerry Bens October 6, 2011 at 7:11 pm

Hi Damian,

I have a new problem with Zappati…….I added 2 new movies to the system after setting up Zappati with the 7 movies I already had on the drive, but when I try to play the 2 new movies by clicking enter on the movie art with the remote in Zappati they won’t play…….I got a message that said…. couldnot access the movie in question and showed the path.

Damian October 7, 2011 at 4:35 pm

Anything special about where these movies are located? Possibly delete from Zappiti and rescan

Pim October 7, 2011 at 4:32 pm

I just set up Zappiti on my Dune Smart D1, working beautifully, but I have one question: is it possible to mark movies or episodes as seen on the Dune? Remembering what I’ve seen, update Zappiti on my PC and export again to my Dune is not really an option…

Damian October 7, 2011 at 4:34 pm

You can only do it from your PC (right click on the video and choose the seen option, and then re export)

Jerry Bens October 11, 2011 at 7:01 pm

Hi Damian,

I still haven’t been able to get the movies to play when I click the movie art…….should I try to setup a short cut on a usb stick?……how exactly do you do that?

Damian October 13, 2011 at 1:20 pm

Hi Jerry,

Is it still the same two movies causing the issue? Are they stored in the same manner as all your other files?

Eddy October 12, 2011 at 11:46 am

Hey Damian,

I’ve read all posts but still haven’t solved my problem. When trying to start a movie through my Dune Lite, I get the ‘unable to open URL’ failure.
My setup
A Synology NAS named ‘Synology’
A Dune Lite named ‘Dune’
One share in the root of the NAS called ‘Movies’ and one called ‘TV Shows’.

I’ve tried SMB, NFS, UNC paths but am still unable to get things working. Any ideas of how to resolve this annoying problem?

Damian October 13, 2011 at 1:21 pm

Sounds like you paths are incorrect. Can you post what they are, where you export file is located, etc…

Also, try making a root folder called videos and in this folder putting your Movies and TV Shows folder in

Eddy October 20, 2011 at 10:24 am

Sharepath: \\diskstation\movies

Moviefolder: \\diskstation\movies
Absolute path: smb://dune:welcome@

TVshows: \\diskstation\tv shows
Absolute path: smb://dune:welcome@ shows

Unfortunately…. no succes. It keeps not finding the files.
Sometimes the export process keeps freezing up. Really annoying application if you ask me.

Damian October 20, 2011 at 4:05 pm

Why do you have Dune in your smb path, is that meant to note your username and password?

Jerry Bens October 13, 2011 at 6:31 pm

Hi Damian,

My problem now is ….I tryed to delete Zappati including the 2 Zappati folders that were in my movies folder…but when I re-installed it it still had the old path setting from before and it would not alow me to change them……I tryed to un-install again and was more careful looking for anything left over …the HDLand was gone…but still was a problem…..I think the French are trying to make us go crazy with so many bugs…… ;(
Maybe there is a utility app that give you the correct paths for this finicky UI

Damian October 13, 2011 at 6:49 pm

you ned to delete the zappiti info in your userdata folder (i forget if local or roaming)

Mark October 19, 2011 at 12:38 pm

I am probably missing something here?? Have read your the zappiti guide but still needed to confirm that if I bought a DUNE to fit an internal HDD drive, could I use and access the zappiti interface from that HDD or would it still need to be networked to a PC or NAS?

Damian October 19, 2011 at 2:10 pm

As long as you export your Zappiti jukebox to the internal drive in your Dune you do not need a PC/NAS on to actually view the jukebox on the Dune. To actually manage the jukebox itself this must be done on a PC

Kent October 29, 2011 at 2:01 pm

Does anyone know which registry file(s) are installed by Zappiti and where they are located? I reinstalled my OS. I backed up the configuration folder, but then stupidly installed the latest version of Zappiti. Even after reinstalling the correct version, it’s still telling me nothing has been scraped. I’m going to commit hara-kari if I have to re-scrape all this stuff.

Damian October 30, 2011 at 11:08 am

Did you delete your User AppData folder (this would be stored under your User and not in Program files). You need to delete this separately

Kent November 1, 2011 at 3:22 pm

Thanks Damian, that was it. When I imported my archived configuration folder, I placed it in the wrong spot. Sooooo, like a moron I was deleting and replacing the WRONG FILE!! I thought I had already done what you suggested, but your comments got me to retrace my steps and I found the problem.

Thanks again.

Peter November 7, 2011 at 10:21 am

Hi Damian,
first of all I also want say Thanks for the great work! It helped me quite a bit!
Since I also just started using Zappiti I do have some questions.
I do have a folder with Tv shows. As you recommended they are devided in Show/Season/Episode. Those work just fine. Some of the shows I saved as DVD isos. The folder then looks like this. Show/Season (which contains the separate discs). Zappiti does not pick up those discs. Is there any way of fixing this besides converting each disc into separate episodes?

My next issue is one I read a lot about here on the site. – the absolute path
For some reason I can not start my TV shows from the Zuppiti gui.
I have attached external drives (attached to Dune Base3.0) which are also connected to my home network using SMB, those are working fine.
I am not using WSH.

share path: \\DUNE\BluRay_I_60c6e2a6c6e27c22\Zappiti
Movie folder: \\DUNE\BluRayIII_7c6c03de6c039256
Absolute path:smb://

Here is were i struggle. I can not configure my absolute path for the TV shows. The TV shows are stored on a my PC. drive D: (internal1)

TVshows folder:D:\Serien
Absolute path:smb://Internal 1/Serien

I have tried all kinds of variations nothing so far has worked

Please help!!!
Thanks in advance

Damian November 8, 2011 at 11:49 am

Hi Peter,

For your TV Show question to be honest I don’t know since I don’t have TV show discs, I always rip to individual episodes to avoid any issues. Your best bet would be to ask on MPCClub as I have seen this same questions asked several times on the best way to arrange.

So to confirm, your Movies play fine but your TV shows don’t? Also, where is your Zappiti index stored? I am thinking you are having a conflict where you are trying to mount multiple smbs at once which you cannot do.

Wayne November 8, 2011 at 12:17 pm

I have lots of TV show disc iso’s, so hopefullly, I can help.

The first thing, is that your Absolute Path seems to be missing a reference to your PC. The Dune has no idea what Internal_1.

For example, if the internal static IP address to your PC is and you are sharing d:\Serien as “Serien” then the absolute path would be smb://

Now, as for the first question, under “Serien”, you need to have your TV show folders, such as “Seinfeld”. Then, in the “Seinfeld” folder you should name the iso’s like “Seinfeld s5e10 s5e11 s5e12 s5e13.iso” if the disc contained episodes 10 – 13 of season 5. So, the full path to this file would be “d:\serien\Seinfeld\Seinfeld s5e10 s5e11 s5e12 s5e13.iso”

Note: I don’t use individual season foldes.

Then, when Zappiti scrapes smb:// it will create a Seinfeld entry in TV shows, a season 5 entry inside that, and pictures and descriptions for those four episodes. All four episodes will pull up the same iso.

Finally, Damien has a good point about the Zappiti location. You should run it from a source connected to the Dune because if Zappiti is on one share of your PC and the iso’s are on another, they won’t pull up.

Clear as mud?

Peter November 9, 2011 at 9:30 am

Hi Wayne / Damian,

Thanks for the quick response! I was finally able to get the right absolute path for my Tv shows. You guys were right. Works fine now! As for my Zappiti folder I guess I was not not clear in my post. It is in one of my hard drives connected directly to the Dune. So that is the setup you guys suggested.
As for the TV show DVD isos, Wayne gave me the right advice. Changed the names to “supernaturalS01E01S01E02…iso etc”. That was the way to go. SUPER!!!
Again I have to say thank you, without your help I would have been stuck! You guys rock!!!
Keep up the good work!

Peter November 10, 2011 at 2:21 pm

Hi there again,
I read the posts of Mark and Blackadder on this post since I ran into the same problem. Playing AVI’s or MKV’s seems to be no problem. Playing BluRay ISO’s and the movie stutters. Kinda looks like slow motion. I have tried all kinds of combinations. Erased the Zappiti folder and transferred new, reset my Dune, reinstalled the system storage. I also moved the Zappiti folder to another thumbdrive (Directly connected to the Dune) following Damian’s suggestion. Also no change. Funny thing is it worked before and all the sudden it does not anymore. Is there an issue with the amount of movies/tv shows? Too many???
Just as an additional info,I am playing the BluRay ISO’s from a hard drive directly attached to the Dune via USB so no speed problem. Only playing them through the Zappiti interface gives me the problem. Playing them through the Dune Explorer is just fine!
Any ideas….?
Thanks again in advance !!!

Damon November 11, 2011 at 7:03 am

My movies used to stutter. It was to do with the “absolute path” in Zappiti. Make sure you aren’t trying to access both in and out of the network interface. Don’t use the ip address of the Dune player in the absolute path for something that is local to the Dune.
Sorry if that doesn’t make sense. It not exactly technical.

Illinois_Girl November 12, 2011 at 7:22 pm

I see you’ve been at this for over a year – helping tons of people get set up. You’re a good man!!! Any chance you could help out with mine too? I’ve been at this for almost a week, but still not getting there.

First a set up: I bought a new dedicated PC for whole media streaming project and it’s supposedly UPnP and DNLA compliant. DO I still need WHS / Samba? When I turn on the Dune and select network browser, then UPnP, I do see the name of this PC. But when I select it it says empty.

Damian November 13, 2011 at 6:20 am

Hello. I assume you have a Windows 7 PC? If so here is great information on setting up proper network sharing with W7:

You don’t want to use UPnP as it is greatly limited, and instead want to use samba or nfs (both of which you can run from W7)

The network browser on teh Dune is a bit flaky so after your PC is set up you will want to add a network shortcut to your Dune Main Menu to your shared folders, and be able to access everything directly without issue. Hope this helps

tim November 13, 2011 at 8:08 am

Hey Damian, good work on the thread. I’ve set up quite a few dunes with different network and share configurations for my home theater customers and have noticed as of lately the only way to get the movies to actually launch without the url error is to delete the absolute path. For some reason zappiti will automatically fill in absolute with one of its examples whether you click on absolute or not.

I am currently working on one that is giving me an annoyance. New Qnap 3tb x 6 in raid 5. From a windows 7 laptop (wireless nic) scraping is taking for ever. I know its not the raid size or form as I’ve built ones this big before but in desktop/server form. The cpu/mem of the laptop and the nas aren’t being pushed close to the limits but it’s been running for days. 1 movie is getting scraped probably every 10 to 15 minutes. Any ideas? I’m thinking about cutting a crossover cable and linking to second Gbe port on nas.

Damian November 13, 2011 at 3:59 pm

Hey Tim,

That definitely doesn’t sound good if it is taking nearly 15 minutes per movie. Any chance you can just hard wire the QNAP and W7 Laptop into a switch and see if that corrects the issue. If so then it is a wireless issue, if not then at a minimum you have scratched one possible item off the list.

Illinois_Girl November 13, 2011 at 10:02 am

Thank you for the response and yes- I am running windows 7. Thanks for the win7 link. I’ll let you know how it goes.

That raises another question – What if I’m planning on going to a NAS server. I think it will already have a server protocol on it. I’ve been looking for servers with UpnP, but it sounds like that’s not the best way to go.

I want to attach the NAS straight to the router so I can have a Dune on every TV and access all the media. (The whole house is wired). The NAS is going to have to be fast to serve multiple players at the same time.

I like to have ISO’s of all the bluray’s so I can only get about 25 movies per terabyte. Needless to say – I’m going to need ALOT of storage. I’ve been looking at 5-6 bay servers with the ability to expand even more later. But, are there going to be any issues with the NAS server being able to read/serve the ISO image? A lot of the specs I’ve looked at on various servers (qnap, synology, dlink, etc.) don’t have ISO listed.

Sorry for the lengthy comment, I’m just nervous I’m going to spend a lot of money and do all this work, then it still won’t work.

Basically, Do you have any suggestions on a good NAS that will do all this, then what protocol I should go with.

Damian November 13, 2011 at 3:16 pm

If you get a NAS server it will already have SMB (and NFS) built in, so there would be nothing additional that you would need to do (as opposed to W7). Don’t bother with UPnP, it is waste and will not support your formats.

As far as a NAS, I have heard very good things about Synolgy. I would look at either that or QNAP.

From there just go with SMB and you will be fine ( you can always test between SMB and NFS, but the Dunes work great with SMB). As long as you are wired you shouldnt have any issues with playback.

Illinois_Girl November 13, 2011 at 5:58 pm

Thanks for confirming. It was actually a lot easier to chose a server once I dropped the requirement for UPnP. I think I’m going with a synology 5 bay (and can add 5 more x 2) later.

After I get this all hooked up and running, we’ll see how much trouble I have writing absolute paths.

Although I did manage to get Zappiti all set up and working on an external drive plugged straight into the dune. (It had the media I wanted to play on it anyway) ——–All thanks to this guide by the way :-)

Peter November 15, 2011 at 6:08 pm

Hi Damian,
I read again through the post entries and found the solution to my “stuttering” problem. Gugs actually had it figured out. Thanks for the post GUGS, super job! Anybody having the same problem just refer to GUGS entry (scroll up a little bit – entry Sept. 13.2011) and your problem will go away!! Also thanks to Damon he had the same Idea!

There is now just one more glitch. Every time I am playing my MKV files it plays without sound. Somehow by chance i found out that when I play an AVI file for a moment and go back to my MKV file the problem is gone. So I have then the movie playing properly. I had that problem for quite a while and I thought updating to the latest Firmware would solve it but it is still there.
Do you guys have a solution? If so please let me know.
Thanks in advance

Damian November 17, 2011 at 5:42 am

I will have to highlight Peter’s comments in the guide, try to get done shortly

I have never heard of this issue tbh, all my mkvs play with sound right from the start. Do you know if this happens for a specific audio codec in your mkvs or all audio codecs in your mkvs?

Mark November 16, 2011 at 12:48 pm

Hi, having eventually connected to my Dune H1 ( with internal 3tb hdd ) I am still having some issues and wonder if it’s something obvious?

1) No option to create shortcut for zappiti to main menu ( system storage initialised to hdd ), only options cut, copy, add to favourites etc

2) Synopsis for movies is cut so that info is missing, re-scraping details makes no difference and cursor will not go further to allow me to paste in missing info.

3) Prob not for this forum – but cannot play iso files without stuttering constantly after 2 seconds, any known issues?

Cheers Mark

Damian November 17, 2011 at 5:39 am

1) With the new main menu your shortcuts get added to your favourites (so choose that option)

2) Not sure I can help on this as I don’t have this issue

3) And this is all from an internal drive? Is the stuttering only when you play via Zappiti or you get the stuttering when playing directly from the Dune file browser?

Mark November 17, 2011 at 8:38 am

Damian, thanks for your reply

1) Will add to favourites then

2) I will play around with zappiti and maybe dig around in other forums as not a major issue just an annoyance.

3) You hit the nail on the head! Files play perfectly if not using zappiti, assume i need to follow Gugs tips per Peter’s posting on the 15th?

Mark November 17, 2011 at 11:33 am

Followed Gugs tips and removing the absolute rewrite path means that zappiti states that the films and tv shows folders must be within the zappiti folder ( ie they must be a subfolders ) after doing this and editing the movie paths in zappiti on the pc via the “entire network” and exporting again all works as last! Thanks for your help and thanks to Gugs!

Peter November 17, 2011 at 5:21 pm

Hi Damian,
I checked all the MKV’s and the audio codecs are not all the same. The problem is with every MKV I play.
Well like i wrote earlier I just have to play a AVI file and then for some odd reason it works. Anyway if someone has the same problem and has found a solution please let me know.
I want to say thank you again, without this post/forum I would be still having my problems. Keep up the good work!!

Damian November 18, 2011 at 6:36 am

Hi Peter,

I wish I could help but I cannot reproduce your problem. Best bet, try posting your problem either on the MPCClub forum or the AVS Dune Smart forum in case other members have come across. Wish I could be more help.

Mark November 18, 2011 at 6:07 am

In all my efforts to get zappiti working on my internal Dune drive it seems I have deleted the language .xml file, i tried re-generating it by exporting again but file still missing, is this file critical on my Dune device, could this be causing problems with missing info in my movie synopsis?

Damian November 18, 2011 at 6:31 am

I believe the language xml file is what is responsible for pointing Zappiti to TVDB/TMDB for scraping movie info

Mark November 18, 2011 at 6:43 am

Thanks Damian, any idea of how i can regenerate the language xml file? Cheers Mark

Damian November 18, 2011 at 6:49 am

Probably just reinstall Zappiti. You can make a backup of your database first so you don’t lose your data

Mark November 18, 2011 at 8:57 am

Damian, thanks for all your help, have done what I thought was a clean uninstall and re-installed and redid the paths etc and scraped again but still the same problems:

Cannot add to Movie synopsis which is cut off
Still no language xml file on the Dune device

At this point I give up, thanks again, Mark

Damian November 18, 2011 at 9:01 am

When you say you did a clean reinstall, did you also clear out everything from your AppData/Local/Zappiti folder?

Damian November 18, 2011 at 9:03 am

Also, I assume you chose your language in the Other tab in Zappiti Settings?

Mark November 18, 2011 at 9:06 am

yes cleaned out all local data and searched my pc drive and deleted all references to zappiti, language was set as US English in other tab already so didn’t re-select it.

Damian November 18, 2011 at 9:13 am

Maybe try copying over my language files?

Mark November 18, 2011 at 9:37 am

Thanks Damian, have copied the en-us xml file to my Dune device but makes no difference, should these language files be on my pc also?

Damian November 18, 2011 at 9:40 am

Wait, you lost me now. These files are for Zappiti which you run on your PC. It has nothing to do with your actual Dune player. SO let’s take a step back in case I missed something, when you run Zappiti on your PC you are not getting the movie info, correct?

Mark November 18, 2011 at 9:45 am

Weird, but completely misunderstood then as the file showed on my Dune device in my zappiti folder without me putting it there? I am getting some movie info but cutoff and cannot edit it or add to it. I can’t see these language files on my pc so should I putting then in my local/apps data/zappiti?

Damian November 18, 2011 at 9:56 am

The language file I sent you is the folder that goes in your Program FIles/HDLand/Zappiti folder. Sorry if I am misunderstanding, so what languages.xml file are you looking for? When you run Zappiti on your PC you get some movie info but cannot edit/add, correct? If so this has to do with Zappiti on your PC and n othing to do with the Dune

Mark November 18, 2011 at 10:07 am

Sorry Damian, I have completely misunderstood, yes i see the language files under Program FIles/HDLand/Zappiti folder, so if the issue isn’t with zappiti or IMDB scraping for which I can’t scrape any details for midnight express then I will have to dig around because it seems there is a limit to the synopsis that is shown as sentence is usually cut off and the remained is blank space and cursor goes no further. Thanks Mark

Damian November 18, 2011 at 10:11 am

Something is definitely off if you cannot edit/scroll. You did change from IMDB to TMDB in your specific language file, correct?

Mark November 18, 2011 at 10:22 am

No I haven’t, thought that was in the settings.xml, ok have never ever played with these file types, still a novice at this, how can I edit it and hopefully fix this without trawling the internet for a solution as just tried to edit it and wouldn’t let me?

Damian November 18, 2011 at 10:35 am

Make sure Zappiti is closed. Locate the “en-us.xml” file under C:/Program Files/HDLand/Zappiti/Languages. Right click on the file, go to “Open With” and choose Notepad. Go down about 30 lines and where you see IMDB referenced change this to TMDB, and save.

Mark November 18, 2011 at 12:15 pm

Thanks Damian, that’s sorted all but one file which is still limited to 7.5 lines in the synopsis, appreciate all your help, for some reason “Thank you for smoking” synopsis will not update so will maybe it’s just a bug on certain files, will keep trying, cheers Mark

Illinois_Girl November 19, 2011 at 12:34 pm

I’ve set up my synology server, created volumes, shared folders, and mapped the shared folder to the computer I’m working from. I even ripped a movie to the server with no problem. But – I’m stuck trying to install Zappiti itself. As I’m running through the set up wizard I get an error “Error opening file: Z:\Zappiti\Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder2.xml”
Any ideas what this is and how to fix it?

Illinois_Girl November 20, 2011 at 7:32 pm

I figured out the error above was affecting more than zappiti. I think it has something to do with Microsoft Silverlight. I tried reinstalling silverlight and Zappiti, but still no luck. I ended up restoring the computer.

In the meantime….I put together a diagram about Zappiti paths here:

I’m definitely no expert at writing paths, so I know it needs corrections, but If you think this will be helpful to others I’d be happy to make the corrections so it could be posted. What do you think?

Peter November 29, 2011 at 4:19 pm

Hi Damian,
I have a quick question. Does the Dune Base 3.0 support 3Tb external hard drives connected via USB?
Thanks in advance

gugs November 30, 2011 at 11:41 am

Yes Dune Base 3.0 support 3Tb external hard drives connected via USB

Peter December 1, 2011 at 11:22 am

Thanks Gugs. Appreciate the Info!!

Kenny December 30, 2011 at 7:58 am

Hi Damian,
I am using My Movies now, but having trouble with no cover art on my Dune prime 3.0 when I added new movies; but I do see them on my Mede8er thought.
My system includes: W7, and WHS EX495, plus a Probox [4 bays] connected to my WHS via USB.
Do I have to delete all of the My Movies’ informations in the movie’ folders to get it works right with Zappiti?
Can I go back to My Movies without any problem, if I change my mind?
Thank you very much and have a nice day :-)

Ja January 3, 2012 at 12:14 pm

This is a little off topic as it deals with Zappiti iPad app:

I am about to buy the Zappiti iPad app and my iPad 2 is sync with my Mac running the latest iTunes. I do have a PC where I can install the Windows application to export my data in .dt file no problem. After this step, do you know if I can use the Mac to load the .dt file into the Zappiti iPad app to control my Dune player?

Hello. I don’t own a Mac so honestly I can’t say one way or other if it would work using Windows to create the export and then bringing the export files over to iTunes on your Mac,

Ja January 3, 2012 at 12:28 pm

Hi Damian,

I just got an email from Jacques at HD Land and the email said that loading .dt file, using a Mac running iTunes into Zappiti iPad app is fine.

By the way, you should buy a Mac :). 20 years PC veteran here and still love the PC but I got a new MacBook Air over the holiday and absolutely love it. Will never go back :). Before anyone flame me, I love the PC too but not as much.

Damian January 3, 2012 at 12:30 pm

That is good to know. It is just a file so I assumed it should work but definitely didn’t want to say since I couldn’t confirm.

LOL, I don’t plan on ever buying a Mac. I am very happy with Windows and enjoy actually building my own PCs at reasonable prices :)

Ja January 3, 2012 at 12:39 pm

Fair enough, Mac is not for everybody. Funny, I was the same way about the Mac. I built all my family PCs and love it and often thought why would anyone want to spend the ridiculous amount of money for a Mac. Look at me now like a kid in a candy store. Anyways, I still love the PCs just love my MB Air a little bit more. It is truly a work of art.

Thank you for all your awesome guides.

Krypto January 13, 2012 at 2:15 am

Hello Damian,

Its been a long time since I last posted in here :) I have run into a problem, my nas was damaged and lost my zappiti database, however I have startet allover and installed xxx.93 and xxx.94 version of zappiti, however I have the same problem.. If u see the screen shot below u can see that zap hasn’t downloaded some of the cover pictures, howver when I push right click –> “change” on forexample avatar it immidiatly gets a picture without I even select one in jacket or background.. Why is that? :)

Krypto January 13, 2012 at 2:18 am

Alot of however however however however sorry :)

Damian January 13, 2012 at 9:01 am

Did you change the search provider for movies from IMDB to TVDB (that languages xml file in the Program File folder)? That is why your covers are most likely not showing

Krypto January 13, 2012 at 10:24 am

I think that worked, however I have a problem that many of my TV shows that scraped before wont with this version and is appearing in the movies folder… strange?

By the way thanks for the response and the good work your doing :)

Damian January 13, 2012 at 11:43 am

There are a lot of problems with the new beta versions. You could try reverting back to the latest stable version.

I actually just installed the latest beta which was released a few days ago. It caused a bunch of problems but ultimately I was able to get it working

Krypto January 14, 2012 at 7:38 am

Worked with going back to older version.. I upgraded my dune firmware to 110606_1315 and exported my zappiti to my nas and made a shortcut.. but when I try to play a movie it says:
Could not download fileinformation
Error: No such file or directory..
Is it a problem with the firmware or is it something with the zappiti I have made wrong?

Cheers :)

Krypto January 14, 2012 at 7:54 am

Just tried downgrade to previous dune firmware, same problem..

Damian January 14, 2012 at 8:29 am

Something doesn’t seem right. Sounds like a Zappiti issue, possibly you can confirm your absolute paths. I assume if you navigate to your movies on the Dune via the file browser then play back fine

Krypto January 14, 2012 at 9:31 am

The abs path were wrong, but I figured it out :)

Have a good day!

Jason January 17, 2012 at 3:39 pm

I just got the HD Smart B1 and trying setup Zappiti. The latest firmware should allow me to set up the system storage correct? I do not need to download the “System Storage Utilties” correct? Went to your link to download (dune_service_init_system_storage.dsf) from but the file is no longer there.

Damian January 17, 2012 at 4:50 pm

Pretty sure you no longer need to do that, correct. Granted I have never done it that way since I set it up before it was an option from the settings menu, but i think you should be fine with needing to get that dsf file.

Hammacher January 17, 2012 at 7:08 pm

Damian – Your site and posts are invaluable. Thank you. I may have missed the solution to my problem but it appears like it may still be unresolved so here it is: I can’t launch Zappiti on my Windows 7 64-bit machine. I installed it successfully, but when I try to launch, it gets to the part where it tries to access the database and then fails. I tried editing the Profils.xml file according to a post at the MPC forum but still couldn’t get Zappiti to launch. Can you help me?

Hammacher January 17, 2012 at 11:00 pm

Follow up – I think I solved it. I read a few threads at MPC forum that talked about uninstalling the Turbo Tax program (for those like me that have it on their computer from last year’s taxes). I did and it worked! Nobody knows why, but I am now able to launch Zappiti and get past the splash screen and onto the setup wizard. I will go back now and read the rest of your setup guide.

Damian January 18, 2012 at 4:56 am

Correct. I have no clue why but you cannot have Turbotax installed and use Zappiti. One of life’s mysteries I guess!!!

Jason January 19, 2012 at 12:33 pm

Anyone knows how to get blu-ray cover art for the BD movies? I have both BD and DVD movies and would like to be able to tell which one. I wish Zappiti didn’t lump everything into 1 category and call it movies.

I even tried having my own BD case cover art for each movie, but Zappiti displays it with a gap on top and bottom which is terrible.

I am looking at Flash Interface as they have BD case cover art.

Wayne January 19, 2012 at 1:16 pm

In the configuration, on the Other tab, there is a selection named “Show Header Jackets”. This puts a small strip across the top of every movie jacket in the menu; blue with a little bluray symbol for blurays and red with a little DVD symbol for DVDs.

Jason January 20, 2012 at 8:01 am

Thanks for the suggestion and I tried the “Header Jackets” you suggested but it looks terrible since it covers part of the actual artwork and made it look worst. I hope Zappiti can come up with something else. Thank you for your response.

Hammacher January 20, 2012 at 2:30 pm

Problem: Zappiti won’t play TV show rips. I can’t find a solution to this issue anywhere online so please point me to the right place for an answer if I missed it or see if you can help me. Here’s the deal

I have 2 shared folders on my PC that the Dune (and Zappiti) access. One folder contains my movie rips (bluray and DVD), the 2nd folder contains my TV show rips (Firefly season on bluray, Planet Earth series on bluray, and a DVD or two). Both folders are on the same HDD attached to my PC. Both folders are shared and visible from the Dune. I can play content from both folders on the Dune using the Dune’s network folder access point. Content from both folders (movies and TV) show up on my Zappiti menu on the Dune. I can launch movies from Zappiti on the Dune but not the TV shows. Using Zappiti, I can successfully click on the Firefly icon, for example and get to the 14 episodes. I can click on each episode and get to the next screen (background info, etc). This is the screen you should be able to launch the TV show from by clicking on the photo. But nothing happens when I do this. Again, it works perfectly for movies but not TV shows. I checked and re-checked Zappiti’s configuration where it lists the folders where it finds my content. The TV show folder path is identical to the Movies path except for the name of the shared folder (“Movies” v “TVshows”). I checked Zappiti’s configuration path to tell the Dune where to find the content on the network and again, both paths are identical except for the final folder (“Movies” v “TVshows”). Spent lots of time on this with no success. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.

Damian January 20, 2012 at 2:41 pm

Are your tv shows individual episode rips I assume?

Also, where is your Zappiti jukebox stored (I am guessing it is in the same shared folder as your movie rips)?

Hammacher January 20, 2012 at 3:05 pm

Hi Damian – My TV shows are individual episodes stored like this: TVseriesAtoK/Firefly/S01E01.
and the rest.

Zappiti jukebox is stored on a 16GB smart card loaded in the Dune and initialized as system storage. Because I have other external hard drives with more movies and TV shows on them, I need the Dune, through Zappiti, to read multiple drives which the Dune won’t do if Zappiti is also on one of those external drives. But having loaded Zappiti on the smart card it works perfectly (for movies). I just can’t figure out how to get the TV shows to play. Perhaps the Dune, through Zappiti, can only access one folder per HDD? Since my “Movies” folder is alphabetically before the “TVshows” folder, maybe the Dune, through Zappiti, can only access the first folder? Weird because, again, I can play the TV shows from the Dune if I don’t use Zappiti and instead just use the Dune’s network browser function.

Hammacher January 20, 2012 at 3:07 pm

EDIT to my last post – Sorry made a mistake – The smart card is NOT what I’m using for system storage. That wouldn’t work for Zappiti. Instead I’m using a USB stick for stystem storage. The smart card is simply an external storage device that the Dune recognizes. I can see it from my PC via the network and export Zappiti directly from my PC to the smart card on the Dune. Works great. Except Zappiti won’t play TV shows…

Damian January 20, 2012 at 3:09 pm

You have a separate folder for each episode? Not sure by your layout, or you have all episodes in one folder per TV show?

Hammacher January 20, 2012 at 3:17 pm

Separate folder for each episode. I ripped to a blu-ray folder structure which created a BDMV folder for each episode (like a movie). Inside each episode’s BDMV folder is a subfolder for the playlist file (“00000.mpls”) and another subfolder for the movie file itself (“00000.m2ts). All the MPLS and M2TS files are named the same for each episode (like all movies as well, they are always named “00000.mpls” and “00000.m2ts”). So I couldn’t put them all in the same folder.

Damian January 20, 2012 at 3:19 pm

That is your problem. I don’t believe Zappiti supports individual folders for episodes (i.e. or folder rips per episode). I would suggest ripping each episode to an individual mkv (this is what I do).

Hammacher January 20, 2012 at 3:31 pm

Well that would explain it. What a relief. I have been going a bit crazy trying everything else I could think of. Okay I will look for one of your MKV guides and see what I can do. I’m sure you’ll see me on one of those threads with questions! Thanks Damian. You rock.

Damian January 20, 2012 at 3:38 pm

Here is my TV SHow mkv guide :)

MakeMKV is probably the best/easiest solution.

I have a folder for each season under the TV show, and the individual mkvs in each respective TV season folder.

Hopefully you will be watching your TV Shows in no time :)

Hammacher January 20, 2012 at 3:48 pm

Thanks again Damian. Too bad that Zappiti scrapes the 14 Firefly episodes perfectly, but won’t launch them. I wonder if I changed the name of each individual m2ts file from “00000.m2ts” to “FireflyEpisode01.m2ts”, “FireflyEpisode02.m2ts” etc and put all 14 m2ts files in a single Firefly/Season01 folder if Zappiti would scrape them and launch them… I might try that and then, when it doesn’t work out, go for the mkv route. Just not looking forward to spending the time to re-rip 14 episodes plus my Planet Earth bluray (11 episodes). Do you think this might work?

Damian January 20, 2012 at 3:56 pm

Yes, you could just rename the m2ts file to S01E01.m2ts, S01E02.m2ts, etc… You still need to make sure though that they are not in separate folders. This is probably the easiest method and once you do you should be set.

Hammacher January 20, 2012 at 4:41 pm

It worked! I renamed the “00000.m2ts” files for each episode to “S01E01.m2ts”, “S01E02.m2ts”, etc. Then I put all 14 m2ts files in a single “Firefly” folder, scanned it with Zappiti, and now I can launch the episodes using Zappiti on the Dune. The one thing you give up doing it this way is chapter support, so you can’t skip to the next chapter or go back to a previous chapter. That’s because the MPLS file (“00000.mpls”) is what Zappiti actually launches from a bluray folder structure for a movie and this MPLS file is what includes the chapter info like a playlist. But until I feel like re-ripping to MKV, I’m fine. TV episodes are usually shorter than movies anyway, so no need to skip around as much.

Thanks again Damian.

Kenny January 20, 2012 at 7:24 pm

Hello Damian,
I spend too much time tried to solve the SQL connection with My Movies; but no luck. Yesterday, I tried Zappiti and I love the way its works with TV Shows.
For some reason I got 7 icons on the Dune for the same movies, and they all work fine when I click on them and play the movie (show the same movie). It shows only one on my computer. How can I correct this problem?
I would like to have a [seperate folder] Icon for the Animation Movies to display on the Dune insteaded of just Movies, TV Shows, and 3 of others. Do you know how?
Thank you very much, and have a nice day :-)

Damian January 22, 2012 at 1:10 pm

Hi Kenny,

You can actually add those icons to your DUne favorites screen. So on the dune if you navigate to the Categories, highlight your “Animated Movies” icon, hit the popup button on your remote, and add to your favorites, it will appear right on the dune.

Kenny January 27, 2012 at 9:24 am

Hi Damian,

I think you missed understood my question.
I organized my movies in a seperate folders like this: Movies, Animation Movies, Magic, Cirque Du Soleil, Excercise Videos, Comedy, Music Videos, TV Shows…etc…
My question is: Can I group them like that with Zappiti, and how?

Thank you very much and have a great day :-)

Damian January 27, 2012 at 9:39 am

Hi Kenny,

Zappiti won’t group my folders as you have. It can group by category though, and so you can view as such and create categories exactly named as your folder are. You would just need to make sure that in Zappiti the correct categories are assigned to each of your movies.

Kenny January 27, 2012 at 11:12 am

Yes, it is very closed to what I want. The only thing is it takes time to edit each movie.
I need a system storage installed in order for me to change the boring Favorite Icons don’t I?
Since I had everything ripped into VIDEO_TS format, and I don’t want to redo it again. I tried every possibilities I can think of to get the TV Shows [ripped from a DVD into VIDEO_TS format too] to play, but no luck. This program is not compatible with VIDEO_TS, I guess?

Again, Thank you very much :-)

Damian January 27, 2012 at 11:15 am

You don’t need system storage to change the icons. You need system storage if you want any shortcuts to appear in your Favorites section on the Dune.

The Dune along with Zappiti play Video_TS folders fine. However, if you have your TV shows ripped this way I don’t believe it will work (it looks for TV Shows to be individual episodes).

Hammacher January 22, 2012 at 12:23 pm

Quick Zappiti scan question: Is there anyway to have Zappiti scan just the new movies you’ve added since the last scan, or must you scan the entire library every time? I ask because everytime I run a full scan, Zappiti forgets some of the manual changes I made the last time and I have to do them all over again.

Damian January 22, 2012 at 1:08 pm

Zappiti needs to scan your entire library to know what is new and what may have changed. It shouldn’t forget manual changes though, that is very odd. Once you make a change it should stick (i.e. the only items that actually get rescanned are new media or media that changed as in you deleted or changed a file name)

Hammacher January 22, 2012 at 1:36 pm

Got it. Thanks.

Hammacher January 26, 2012 at 5:07 pm

Firefly TV Series – Episodes listed in different order on TheTVDB than they appear on the Bluray discs. I know TheTVDB has decided to list the episodes in the order they actually aired on television, at least according to the folks at TheTVDB. However, this is not the order they appear on the bluray discs and so Zappiti has mislabeled most of the episodes. For example, Zappiti (pulling from TheTVDB) has labeled the first episode “The Train Job” when in fact this episode is actually the episode entitled “Serenity” which is chronologically the first episode in terms of the storyline AND the first episode on the first disc of the bluray set. Any fix for this? I’ve seen a few threads in other forums where the TheTVDB moderators don’t appear very gracious (to say the least) when asked about this.

Damian January 27, 2012 at 9:40 am

Firefly is a lost cause with TVDB, learned a while back to give up on that cause

Hammacher January 27, 2012 at 9:54 am

Oh well. Thanks for the info.

Wayne January 27, 2012 at 10:51 am

For Firefly I named the ISO’s after the episode. My first DVD is named Firefly s01e01 s01e02 s01e11.iso. Then, in Zappiti, I put the real episode number after the name of the episode.

So, down at episode 11 you will find “11: Serenity (1)” and at episode 1 and episode 2 you will find “1: The Train Job (2)” and “2: Bushwhacked (3)” respectively.

All 3 lead to DVD #1 and I can figure out where I left off.

It’s a lot of hoops to go through to get it right, I know.

Another, simpler option would be to name the iso, “Firefly s1e1.iso”. Then the disc is mapped to only one episode. Then you could edit the text of the title to be “1: Disc 1″ or “1: Serenity, The Train Job, Bushwhacked”. Then you could change the images to be whatever you want.

Hmm… I think I like the second idea better than what I actually ended up doing. ;)

Jason January 28, 2012 at 10:42 am

How does Zappiti handle multiple MKVs files inside a folder? Example: I have a movie with the main movie ABC.mkv and extra.mkv, both inside ABC folder. When I press play which file will get played? and how can I play the extra.mkv?

Damian February 2, 2012 at 1:02 pm

FYI – for all the Zappiti users, please be aware:

Gugs February 3, 2012 at 12:56 pm

Do you have to pay to use Zappati now? I have downloaded the latest version (Zappiti-v2.3.1099.0) and when you press the ‘Export Dune’ button it comes up with ‘You Must Aquire a License’ window and the registration screen asks for an ‘Invoice Number’ or ‘Another bill scanned (max 2MB)’. Not sure where you get either from – any ideas?

Damian February 3, 2012 at 1:30 pm
Kidde123 February 10, 2012 at 2:34 am

I emailed HDLand directly and attached a copy of my invoice, i simply requested they validated my account. As i live in the UK this shouldn’t be a problem. I received a response back within 2 minutes confirming they will validate my account. Other than the lack of communication regarding the registration process i cant really complain. I suggest taking this approach as it seems to work, maybe they are actually reading these forums and taking the critisim onboard.

Keep up the good work Damian.

Damian February 10, 2012 at 3:03 am

Great to hear. Honestly the whole lack of communication is what confusing. It was like pulling teeth to even get someone to acknowledge that we could send a household bill if we didn’t have an invoice.

Zappitti Fan .. soon to Ex-Z fan? February 10, 2012 at 2:45 am

Interesting! I emailed them directly and they shot a reply and said file via Zappitti. Since I dont have my receipt, I sent a copy of my mailing address on a US Federal Document. All this happend last week and no response yet! So maybe this process is hit and miss.

And I continue to get the same message on Zappitti when I try and upload to my Dune player – You have 1 day to obtain validation or something to that effect.

I might be one of the few that will fall through the cracks. Maybe in time I will be a ex-fan and move on to another software. Maybe a paid solution might work better?

Damian February 10, 2012 at 3:01 am

I actually had to submit one of my bills showing my address twice before they finally confirmed. I would try submitting again

Jason February 10, 2012 at 3:03 am

My finally got validated yesterday after about 7 days, using my invoice (print it off of site). I had to re-register on the 6th day and the next day I was validated.

My brother sent in his home heating bill and also got validated after about 6 days.

Damian February 10, 2012 at 3:14 am

Great to hear. It is annoying now that every time you go to export a message still pops up, just now telling you that you are registered

Hammacher February 15, 2012 at 8:49 am

FYI – I only received the pop-up message telling me I was registered once. Since then, Zappiti exports as usual with no pop-up messages or delays.

Kidde123 February 15, 2012 at 9:14 am

As Hammacher, i only received this message once, then everthing was back to normal and working fine, until now: -

When opening Zappiti last night, i was presented with a message saying…. “zappiti has stopped working…windows is checking for a solution to the problem”.

Now the programme does not work at all and i dont know why, nothing has changed on my windows 7 PC, all was fine, now its not. Has anyone else experienced this error, if so what can i do. Your help is appreciated.

Damian February 21, 2012 at 8:36 am

I haven’t run into this issue. Did you by chance install Turbotax?

Kidde123 February 21, 2012 at 9:47 am

Hi Damian,

Thanks for the response but no i havent installed Turbolax, i understand there is some compatibility issues with Zappiti. I have resolved this now thopugh, it seems that because i wasnt logged onto my server the Zappiti programme would not open. When i looged on to make some changes, Zappiti opened no problems.

I do have another issue which you could possibly help with, its with the Zappiti app for Ipad. I have set it up and all my movies can be viewed correctly using my Ipad, hovever the movies do not play when you press the play icon on the top right corner of the screen. Could this be a result of the Itunes database being installed on my Dune HDD? My movies are on a shared folder on the server. I seem to have done everything correctly, but this issue is driving me crazy. I emailed HDLand but they cant support my becasue their English is not good enough!!

Many thanks

Damian February 21, 2012 at 9:56 am

I am not sure yet since I haven’t tried the iTunes App yet (I was waiting for the whole registration nonsense to be sorted out first, and now that it is I will be grabbing in the next day to test/write about). I have tested a few other iPad Apps for the Dune and playback has worked as expected. i will post back if I find out anything.

Sorry to hear you had to use Turbolax ;)

5Pencer! February 16, 2012 at 8:44 am

Looks like I am moving one step forward, and one step back with the Dune & Zappiti.

I now have an issue playing some films from the 2x internal Dune HDD’s. (Smart D1 + HE add-on module)

It doesn’t happen with all the movies, but on some for example Abduction (2011), it says:

Error Getting File Information

Path: _Zappiti/02/000-…346a7f92db446/launcher
Error: No such file or directory

Any ideas? I have no idea why this is happening, I haven’t even been using the internal HDD’s, as I’ve been busy working on my Zappiti/NAS issue, so nothing has changed with the HDD’s.

Cheers in advance.

5Pencer! February 16, 2012 at 9:44 am

Hi All,

I’ve identified the problem that I mention above. When I scan my files, Zappiti finds all the movies. Some films it cannot find, and I have to tell it which cover-art and details to download. Sometimes it will find the correct film, but doesn’t have the cover I like, so change to a new one. (Avatar for example)

It looks like these are the ones having the issue.

I deleted Avatar from Zappiti then did an export to Dune. I then did a scan/scrape and let it find Avatar again. I kept the cover zappiti found, then exported.

Now I can play Avatar!?

Do you know what the problem is?

Damian February 21, 2012 at 8:36 am

Did you change the movie provider to TMDB from IMDB?

Mark February 21, 2012 at 3:53 am

Damian, thanks for you help in the past, having got everything working to a point and then having killed my hdd, I am rebuliding and have noticed that on the latest zappiti version when I customised the main screen and category icons on the pc and exported, when next launching zappiti on the pc all the icons are blank, is this normal or should i have saved the settings somewhere? Not a major deal as assume I could always leave the icons to the end when i have finished re-ripping my movies…can see a similar thread in mpcclub but no solutions, cheers Mark

Damian February 21, 2012 at 8:33 am

Which version are you using? I am using 1097 and haven’t encountered this issue (although I found when I did upgrade from an older db to this one it did kill some of my categories/icons). Also, are your customized icons somewhere that is active when you start Zappiti?

Mark Amos February 22, 2012 at 12:44 pm

Damian, I am using version 1099. What do you mean by the icons being somewhere active? The icons I used were in a folder on the PC desktop, where should they be? Cheers Mark

Damian March 5, 2012 at 1:34 pm

Hi Mark,

Are you still having the same issue? Sorry if I was vague, what I meant is that if you point Zappiti to a location where those icons are, and then move those icons (or the location is not accessible when you are using Zappiti), then you will lose the icons

Hammacher February 26, 2012 at 12:01 am

Autoresume question: The auto-resume feature is not working on my D1. I have a feeling there is a setting I have wrong OR I need to set up flash memory differently than I did. Can you give me a refresher on how to get this feature working? I stop watching a movie half way through, then come back later and launch the bluray rip again to find it starts from the beginning when I’d like to start where I left off.

Hammacher February 29, 2012 at 3:32 pm

Or is autoresume on the D1 dependent on a Zappiti setting? Because right now everytime I stop a movie, the next time I go to play it I have to start at the beginning of it.

Damian February 29, 2012 at 3:34 pm

I believe auto resume is in the Dune settings itself. What type of files are you playing back?

Hammacher February 29, 2012 at 4:54 pm

I’m playing bluray rips from my PC (m2ts files from BDMV folder format made using Clown_BD). I’ve got Dune’s autoresume options all set to “yes.” Interestingly, the DVD rips I’ve got (VOB files playing from the DVD folder structure) DO respond to autoresume. Why don’t the bluray rips?

Damian March 5, 2012 at 1:21 pm

Sorry, missed your response. I think there is an issue with auto resume on Blu-rays (a known issue)

Hammacher March 6, 2012 at 7:02 pm

Too bad. I hope Dune is listening and will fix it.

Burn March 7, 2012 at 3:01 pm

hi Damian, i hope you can help me: my dune gives error while loading iso images from the internal disk (WD20EARS), i can load some movies but not others (that i can correctly load and read from the pc’s inside the lan.
i got the last beta firmware. i sometimes get error also if i stop a movie, and the dune restarts.
please, help me!

Damian March 12, 2012 at 1:02 pm

Still having the same issue? I don’t use internal disks with my Dune so I am not sure what the problem could be. Did you try reformatting your hard drive?

Burn March 12, 2012 at 1:48 pm

i think that an image file could be the problem. if i don’t try to load it the Dune is ok, and works fine, but if i mount it i get errors also opening others (the same image file works fine on 4geek playo, notebooks, wdtvlive).

Mark March 12, 2012 at 12:40 pm

Damian, per your response 5th March, yes thanks I resolved by removing a sub folder the icons were in ( on my desktop ) and this seems to have worked, the only small issue I have is that everytime I export, zappiti re-instates the category name after it’s been restarted but as I have finished loading up my 3tb hdd it’s not a major issue.
Reading the auto-resume issues, I have the opposite problem where enabling it for dvd rips causes movies to start at randon points when playing back iso files? Anyhow, I still have a few bugs in my zappiti install but nothing that can’t be resolved with manual editing so otherwise it’s a great piece of software!
Is there anyway way to remove the icon names when selected in the “Home” screen? ie the icon I have says movies and when selected using pc or dune device underneath icon it also states movies etc?
Thanks for all your help!

Damian March 12, 2012 at 1:05 pm

I haven’t seen a way to remove/add any of the icons/names from the home screen. Now that I think about it, there may be one option. If I recall in that language xml file (en-us.xml), you might be able to manually edit some of the names that appear. I remember at some point I was able to rename “Scrap” to “Scrape”. Might be worth looking through that file to see if anything stands out.

Mark March 12, 2012 at 3:07 pm

Cheers Damian, you’re spot on, edited the Languages en-us xml file and about 100 lines down made all the changes to the below to remove the icon names and now looks better:

Thanks again

Shree March 27, 2012 at 8:18 am

Hi Damian-

Just wanted to post a note on the recent experience. I built a new PC and installed Zappiti and guess what, I am back in the loop of asking for an approval code! This is fast becoming tedious and now I am pursuing alternate solutions.

Sent an email to HDLand and they referred me back to the registration process. I think I have now wasted enough time going through the ringer to get to use the software.

Just sent a response to HDLand to that effect. Already downloaded and installed yadis. Looking into 10Muse also.

Can you also please comment on what is the difference b/w the paid version of the iPad app and free app?

Thx again for your contributions!

Best regards,

Damian April 4, 2012 at 3:06 pm

Hi Shree,

Sorry to hear about your issues. As far as the paid vs free app, are you talking about 10Muse or Zappiti (I assume 10Muse)

Shree April 5, 2012 at 5:42 am

No worries. I was asking about 10Muse.

Also, I have installed Yadis and it is working well. Just not sure I like the icons on the screen yet :-) Now I am being picky, but I was able to add all the TV shows but still working on the movies though.

Do please let me know about 10Muse.

Damian April 5, 2012 at 12:02 pm

The Free version limits you to 50 movies,. It gives you a chance to use 10Muse with full functionality before deciding if you want to purchase

Peter April 12, 2012 at 5:13 pm

Hi Damian,

its been a while since I asked something. So far my system is running good. I have one issue. I am not able to scrape the right info and details for a show although I looked it up on ‘the TVBD’ and it appears there. I am using the same writing but it won’t work. Is there a way of putting in the show ID number so Zappiti finds it and if there is how is it done?
Thanks in advance and keep the good work up!

Damian April 13, 2012 at 6:01 am

Hi Peter,

Unfortunately not right now, which tbh I really don’t understand why what should be a simple feature to add hasn’t been done. I only ever had an issue with one show, and so I had to manually edit each episode :(

TrackZ April 12, 2012 at 6:20 pm

Can someone tell if there’s a way to manually enter info for a TV series. I found that if it can’t scrape a movie, you can still hit the Default button and then enter in your own information. The default button doesn’t seem to do anything for TV shows though. I’d really like to customize some series rather than going with theTVDb’s information.

Damian April 13, 2012 at 6:02 am

See my response right above, unfortunately no, you have to manually edit each episode (otherwise zappiti pulls in the info from the incorrect show)

Peter April 13, 2012 at 6:12 am

Thanks Damian, I guess I have to do some manual work!
I hope there will be a better solution in the future!

Best Regards

Damian April 13, 2012 at 6:22 am

Yeah, like I said, seems downright silly that you can’t point a TV Show to the correct one if Zappiti pulls in incorrectly. If I remember correctly Zappiti will have issues with shows that have “&” or other special characters in. My wife had a TV show “Brothers & Sisters” , Zappiti would only pull it in as a show called “Brothers”, so I would then have to manually edit each episode. Fortunately the TV show sucked and was cancelled!

TrackZ April 13, 2012 at 8:28 am

Im fine editing each show, but how do you even get the series to show up in the list to edit without making a tvdb match first? Or am I misunderstanding your reply?

Damian April 13, 2012 at 8:31 am

Well, I just let Zappiti bring in the TV Show incorrectly, and then I just edit manually from there. Or is your issue Zappiti won’t bring in your show at all?

TrackZ April 13, 2012 at 2:38 pm

Yes, how do you get it to bring in a show without a match? Do you force a bad match and then edit or is there some way to bring a whole show in blank? For a movie, you can hit the default button on the scan screen and it will bring it in blank. That button does nothing for me though when on a show.

Patrick May 30, 2012 at 8:36 am

Hi everybody, I’ve been going through all sorts of forums hoping to find a solution to my problem. I have 3 ReadyNAS DUO V2 from Netgear setup with fixed IP adresses for all my media contents (movies + tv shows). I’m trying to setup Zappiti to work with my network. I’m trying to use the NFS protocol rather than SMB as I undesrtand that with the dune players (in my case D1 + TV-301) it does not allow multiple instances (access). Does anyone know how to setup the exporting paths for Zappiti, because I’ve tried pretty much everything and nothing works! I always get the error message “impossible to open the URL”. I currently use nfs://NAS IP/Disc1/Films. I’ve tried changing the slash in backslash but nothing. Any ideas? Thank you for your help.

Damian June 18, 2012 at 1:49 pm

Did you get this working, from looking at your post your NFS path looks incorrect (you are missing several colons)

Kunal June 25, 2012 at 6:06 am

I also have lot of music videos and also flac music, so the folders I need are movies, music videos, documentaries and music.
Can I create custom folders in zappiti, also how would I do that?

Damian June 27, 2012 at 3:23 am

Zappiti does not support music, only video files (so your music videos are fine, but not your flac). As far as custom folders, you would just need to create a new Genre/Category and assign whatever videos you want to show here.

Kunal June 26, 2012 at 5:46 am

Hi Damian,

Your system storage utilities link is dead, do you know of another location to get them from.

Damian June 27, 2012 at 3:19 am

Hi Kunal,

I think with the latest fw update you can actually do the system storage directly from the settings, you no longer need the separate dsf file

Kunal June 27, 2012 at 3:27 am

Hi Damian,

Thanks I just figured it out.
I wanted to know in terms of the file/folder re-naming can the folder have multiple file (eg text file, art files, etc) should they be exactly the same name to the movie?

Damian June 27, 2012 at 3:33 am

You can multiple files (text, art, etc…) in, it won’t impact Zappiti and you don’t have to worry about naming. I have a ton of crap in each of my movie folders lol.

Kunal June 28, 2012 at 4:39 am

Hi Damina,

I would like to use Upnp, as SMB is slow, is it possible with Zappiti?

Kunal June 28, 2012 at 4:42 am

Also was checking info on the files in DUNE was something like name/sub folder/file name.mp4

Kunal June 28, 2012 at 10:21 pm

Hi Damian,

I’am looking to use another protocol which is quicker then SMB, would NFS be a good choice?
If so, have you got an understanding of what the absolute path would be for the share, also would I need to make any changes on my NAS.

Damian July 7, 2012 at 5:59 am

Hi Kunal,

What exactly do you mean by “quicker”? NFS is a solid option to smb for playback, but I wasn’t sure if you meant quicker as in faster navigating around

Saurabh July 4, 2012 at 1:49 am

Thansks for a detailed guide.
Yesterday i tried to setup Zappiti for my Dune HD MAX, the new version is bit different from the version explained in the guide, but I was able to set it up. 2 issues
1. I am not able to add the location of movie folder which is there in the hard disk connected internally, it is just not showing it when adding thru network share option, although surprisingly i was able to access the same for exporting the database to the dune.
2. I am able to see the video art on the dune but not able to PLAY the movie.
I could not find an option to put the absolute path details.

looking for help

Damian July 7, 2012 at 6:08 am

1. Do you mean adding a shortcut to your favorites on the Dune? If so you need to have system storage set up

2. You are using an internal drive? Sounds like the absolute path is not correct as it needs to point to the internal drive. How do you have it set up currently?

Saurabh July 7, 2012 at 8:30 am

1. I am able to add short cut to dune
2. Yes, i am using internal drive, the problem is, it is not showing up while adding video path, the dune as such is accessible from my PC thru SMB.
Also I am not able to find out how to enter absolute path in the latest version.

Saurabh July 7, 2012 at 7:43 am

I have vids at 2 locations in my PC and dune internal hdd. I am able to add pc folder to zappiti but zappiti does not show me my dune internal hdd for adding video location
I have system storage set up

Damian July 7, 2012 at 9:14 am

In the Dune settings you need to enable SMB server. Once you do this your internal drive will be accessible for any other machine on your network (and Zappiti should see)

Saurabh July 8, 2012 at 7:23 am

SMB is already enabled and I am able to access dune on the PC, its only Zappiti that is not able to see it while adding video location.
As mentioned previously also, dune is accessible thru zappiti but only for exporting the data base to dune.
confusing !

joeychizzel July 23, 2012 at 12:05 am

hi everybody – i love zappiti – absolute best jukebox out there. I do have a question though – does anybody who labeled pixar shorts correctly know what they labeled the new shorts as? the ones like ‘day & night’, ‘partly cloudy’ and so and so forth are only labeled as ‘specials’ according to tvdb. is someone who was able to do this correctly tell me how they labeled the other pixar shorts to show up. they finally fixed LIFE but now it’s pixar shorts. thank you!

Paul July 23, 2012 at 1:23 am

I have a dune H1 and would really like to install and use zappiti, I have a few concerns before I get to far into this. I have files in several locations, movies are in a movie directory mapped drive from the PC and SMB from the Dune, plus, mt2s files in the dune internal drive. Will I be able to have the program work on two separate addresses? My on,y use is for the dune. Also, I really want to have the movies on the IPAD app, however I also like the Remote Control on the my movies write up, does the zappiti app have a remote control?

Derrick August 10, 2012 at 9:45 am

Hi Damian,

I posted this on mpcclub as well but wanted to see if you could offer a suggestion:

I’ve been using Zappiti for years now with no major issues. I recently upgraded to and the menu will no longer display on any of the Dunes.

Check out the pictures below as it displays properly on the PC but only shows folders on the Dunes.

Nothing else has changed on my end. I tried uninstalling and going back to version Still problems.

Now I uninstalled Zappiti and deleted all files including files in the AppData folders.
I also deleted all files in the Zappiti_Config_Folder and Zappiti_Share_Path and re scrapped and exported so everything was new. Still having the same problems.

I am out of ideas now…

Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Damian August 10, 2012 at 3:21 pm

Hi Derrick,

I actually just upgraded to 2.5.5 after being on an older version since the beginning of the year. So far I have no issues and honestly not sure what could be yours. It seems like files are getting dropped when you export.

Where are you exporting your jukebox to (internal drive, server, etc…)?

Derrick August 13, 2012 at 8:04 am

Hi Damian,

It seems 2 other users are having the exact same problems as I am.
I am exporting to a server, the same server where all the media is located (Synology 1511+). From what user peterbus mentioned this is the problem:

“can you export to a thumb drive and attach to the dune?
i find exporting over networks is fraught with probs, works sometimes but not always.
you say 14 is working then this may be the prob,”

He mentioned to export to a thumb drive then attach to the Dune. My problem is I honestly don’t know what he means. I keep asking to clarify but not getting a straight answer from him. Does he want me to now export to a thumb drive then attach to the Dune each time I add media. That would drive me crazy as I update many times a week.

It feels like something is broken in this latest version and he is offering a work around.
I may just stick with for now. He mentioned any version after that and before 2.5.5 will break all the paths.

Damian August 28, 2012 at 1:39 pm

Hi Derrick

Are you still having issues. All my media is on my server and that is where I export my Zappiti jukebox. I have never had an issue exporting over the network

joe August 10, 2012 at 9:16 pm

hi – i have a question regarding zappiti. i had everything all set up nicely with zappitti until my computer crashed and failed and i had to do a reformat on my PC. when i installed zappiti on my i had to rescan my NAS and redownload all my information, etc. again. this is very annoying because i like to choose my cover/background for every movie instead of the default. i noticed that on my dune, i still had my old zapitti set up and it still worked. is there a way that i can inport the zapitti folders/images that is on my dune so that when i re-install zapitti on my newly formatted computer, it will have all the same images/covers films as before? or do i have to rescan and scrape all over again from scratch? any info/help is much appreciated. thanks!

Damian August 28, 2012 at 1:33 pm

Hi Joe – not sure if you got an answer. My assumption would be all the settings/images reside in the Zappiti db which is on your PC. It may be worth just backing up the db periodically to avoid losing all your data

Gil August 22, 2012 at 11:57 pm

Hi. If Zappiti scrapes the wrong movie, I know that I can go in and select a different choice. However what do you do when Zappiti scrapes the wrong TV show? There seems to be no option to find the right show and make the change.

Also, does anyone know how Zappiti can deal with films composed of two parts, like CD1 and CD2. Have not stumbled upon naming convention that copes with this.

Thank you.

Damian August 28, 2012 at 1:34 pm

I believe there is no option for TV shows. Don’t ask me why this has not been added, makes no sense whatsoever….

As far as multi disc, tbh I don’t know much about since if I have a multi disc movie I merge them into one file

Emile October 15, 2012 at 1:31 am

Martynas November 5, 2012 at 3:32 am

I have a Dune HD Smart D1 player with 1TB internal hard drive. I wonder if there is any way that I install Zappiti to the internal drive of Dune and it downloads all movie information via wireless internet (as it connects to internet)? Or is it necessary always download everything to PC first and then export to Dune?

Damian November 5, 2012 at 6:15 am

Zappiti requires a PC to run/scrape

Martynas November 5, 2012 at 6:17 am

Thank you Damian. Do you know if there are any similar programmes that do not require PC and can do the library simply downloading everything directly to Dune HD Smart D1?

Damian November 5, 2012 at 6:20 am

Unfortunately as of now I believe all 3rd party jukeboxes require a PC running to use with the Dune.

Martynas November 5, 2012 at 8:12 am

Thank you Damian. The problem is that if I export movies to Dune everything works OK, but what should I do if I want to add more movies to Dune’s internal drive so they also belong to the same library? Do I have to remake the whole library again with my PC? Or is there a way to export single movie to a USB flash and get it on Dune with all Zappiti interface?

Damian November 5, 2012 at 8:24 am

Your dune internal drive should be accessible over your network, so you would simply point Zappiti on your PC to your internal drive so it can scrape.

Martynas November 5, 2012 at 8:28 am

Is it possible to connect Dune with my computer simply via wireless? If so, what should I configure, so my PC finds Dune…?

Jeff November 29, 2012 at 11:52 am

Thanks again Damian for the guide, it made set up pain free! All of a sudden Zappiti is not scraping anything anymore. All titles fail. Is anyone else having this problem? Any ideas/suggestions? TIA

Jeff December 12, 2012 at 1:54 pm

Thanks for emailing me Damian. I got the scraping working again by reinstalling Zappiti and changer scraper to imdb and back to tmdb. I have no idea why that worked but it did!
Now I’m having another issue that I’d be really grateful if you or anyone else could help me out with. When I’m browsing Zappiti in Dune, all artwork shows but for some reason I can’t launch the movie from the image file. Oddly enough, all of my titles from A-D work fine, but anything from E-Z simply will not launch. While looking at the info picture in Dune for Dumb & Dumber I hit info on Dune remote and it gives me the correct url path to the movie file. When I go to E.T. and do the same the file is listed as “dune_folder.txt” instead of the movie and shows the size as 524 bytes, so it’s looking at the image file rather than the movie file. It’s like this for any titles from E-Z. Any idea on how/why that happened and how to fix? When browsing Zappiti on my PC this problem doesn’t exist. The path media is set properly and clicking the image launches Media Player Classic, so it’s something on the dune export going wrong. I’ve tried re exporting numerous times both completely and incrementally with no luck. If I add a new title starting from A-D and export, it works fine, E-Z no luck. I’m completely stumped! Please help!

TD December 24, 2012 at 10:26 am

Hello I had the same issue. What I did was place an underscore in front of the movie titles in the Zappiti edit page as a temporary fix which enables movie play for all titles. What it did was place that dune text folder at the very end of the movie library. Unfortunately, it doesn’t alphabetize the movies in the Zappiti A-Z options page. So I submitted a post as you have to see if there’s a better work-around to fix this. But try that out and see if it works for you. Let me know. I look forward to seeing your results.

TD January 22, 2013 at 2:26 pm

Jeff. I was checking in with you to see if you have solved your issues with your movies passed the letter E.

Jeff January 23, 2013 at 1:24 pm

Hey TD, no I never was able to figure out that problem. When I am browsing Zapitti via Dune I simply hit return on the Dune remote to go back from the specific movie image to the wall list of movies and with the cursor on the movie I want to watch I hit “play” instead of “enter” on the remote and it launches the movie. It’s frustrating because I don’t know what caused the problem or how to fix it (obviously has something to do with folder name _Dune) but it’s a pretty mild inconvenience to hit return then play to launch a movie rather than enter from within the Zapitti jpg.

I’m having scraping problems again now. I can’t get any images to scrape, details working fine. Also for custom genre categories that I created, they do not display properly in the Dune UI. It lists the category and a blank folder to the left of the category. Clicking on the category does nothing, but clicking on the folder to the left generates a list of movies in file browser style, not Zapitti. Another minor hassle. The non scraping of images is a bigger problem at the moment. Anyone else dealing with this?

TD January 23, 2013 at 2:27 pm

Ok I hear ya. I don’t know why you’re having the scraping issues, but I’ll look into it. I’m still working on figuring out the other problem of movies listed after the letter E. But try what I suggested after you figure out your scraping problem. Go to the Edit of your movie and place an underscore in front of the movie, ie _El Mariaci. That worked for me. Try it and let me know how that works for you.

TD January 23, 2013 at 2:27 pm

That should’ve been _El Mariachi. :-)

TD December 24, 2012 at 10:18 am

I have a question. After installing Zappiti and getting it running, I was only able to play movies from (A) through (D). After doing some digging around through the files I discovered movies (A) through (Dr) had the Dune Text folder behind the movie title enabling video play but movies beginning at (E) had the text folder in front of the movie title preventing movie play. What I did was place an underscore in front of all 400+ movie titles (Ex. _Armageddon) which keeps the text file behind the movie titles and enabling play. But doing it that way doesn’t alphabetize the movies in theZappiti A-Z options page. Is there another work around you can recommend, or is that text file really necessary for functionality. I thought about deleting the text file, but I figured it would be smarter checking with you first. Please let me know if you have any recommendations and have a good day and Happy Holidays to you. :-)

John W January 21, 2013 at 7:22 pm

Dumb question? Can you actually play a movie in the dune using Zappiti?

Damian January 23, 2013 at 1:00 pm

Yes, you actually use Zappiti as your UI, select a movie, and it plays on the Dune

John W January 24, 2013 at 12:07 pm

Are you planning to update your tutorial? Because I cannot get Zappiti to work. The part I keep having problems with is the whole “path” part.

Damian January 24, 2013 at 12:09 pm

Maybe you could clarify your path question (what is your setup, what did you set your path as, etc…). As of now I don’t plan on updating since I don’t believe much has changed (I still use regularly and am running the latest version)

TD January 24, 2013 at 1:33 pm

Sure. It’s pretty simple. Just go to your movie thumbnail, right click on it and go to edit. Your movie title will show at the very top, (Armageddon, Demolition Man, etc.) Simply put an underscore in front of the title, (_Armageddon, _Demolition Man) and that should do the trick. The drawback is it doesn’t alphabetize the movies with the underscore when you just wanna jump to a letter of movies. I’m still working on that fix. Hopefully the experts can guide us in the right direction as far as fixing the problem. Good luck and get at me whenever you wish. Let me know if that works for you.

John W January 25, 2013 at 7:51 pm

I figured it out thanks to the folks on the Zappiti forum.

When I dragged the folder to show Zappiti where my movies were located this is how it wrote the path:

This is how it should have been:

When I added that last “/MOVIES” it worked fine.

Thanks for your help.

sledge January 25, 2013 at 7:39 am

I’ve got a simple question, Avatar 3D bluray iso 50GB is not running. How do I get this to work within Zappiti?

I tried to change the settings in Zappiti but it will still not work.

Damian January 25, 2013 at 7:44 am

What Dune are you using? You need either the TV303d or the Base3D to play back a 3D Blu Ray.

FYI – I fixed your nog edit :)

sledge January 25, 2013 at 8:31 am

base3d, the new zappiti player (it’s own brand, based on Dune base 3D)

Damian January 25, 2013 at 8:34 am

It should just play (i.e. Zappiti is just the front end, it shouldn’t impact playback). It sounds like you possibly just have a bad path in Zappiti

sledge January 25, 2013 at 8:39 am

I just scraped the movie like any other in the same container. This one is not running, while all the others do.
I know I’m supposed to get a menu from which I can choose (play lite) but this isn’t showing. I get a menu with 35 chapters BD 3D and a lot of 6 seconds files in the list.

Maybe I messed up the settings in Zappiti, of in the Dune for that matter?

Damian January 25, 2013 at 8:40 am

Does it play fine outside of Zappiti? I tested a few Blu-ray 3D ISOs yesterday on my TV303d, but just from the network browser and not Zappiti

sledge January 25, 2013 at 8:46 am

It doesn’t show in my upnp diskstation connection. While the others do. Should I try to find it with the SMB connection?

Damian January 25, 2013 at 8:48 am

I never use UPnP as typically it supports a limited file selection. Instead I use smb.

Another question, do you use ISOs for your entire collection? Is the ISO movie set up the same as all your other movies (so if each of your movies is in its own folder is the 3D ISO in its own folder as well)?

sledge January 25, 2013 at 8:59 am

No my collection is random, so one is in its own folder, the next is VIDEO_TS, the next is MKV, etc.

This is what makes the dune so valuable to me. :)

Damian January 25, 2013 at 9:07 am

Same here with my library. Not sure why it wouldn’t launch. I was asking about your structure because I know some people who keep each movie in its own folder but forget to put a new one it is own folder (so instead putting it in the root folder). In a case like this Zappiti would scrape but it won;t play it,

sledge January 25, 2013 at 9:51 am

Tried it with the SMB browser, still no luck. I had the same issue with some VIDEO_TS folders….a bit strange isn’t it.

The player looks like it is playing, except de video on my tv has no signal. maybe this is my output setting or so? But that’s weird, because my tv should accept everything. (it’s a brand new samsung 3d tv…)

sledge January 25, 2013 at 11:23 am

For anyone who has the same problem, I just resetted my Zappiti player to factory settings and that solved the problem. Probably the firmwareupdate at first install was the problem. however my dune plays everything now. ;)

Damian January 25, 2013 at 11:24 am

Awesome. How are you liking the Zapp player so far? I haven’t decided if I will pick up. I have a base 3D coming in for review in a few weeks

Emile January 25, 2013 at 3:49 pm

I wrote the following before
but no one answered
so here it is again:

I have several movies
and episodes of series, all in separate folders per movie or episode
that wil not play.15 movies(3 video_ts)
30 episodes(7 video_ts)

zappiti has scraped them but when i press play or enter on the movie or episode i want to watch nothing happens.
And also when i play the files with the dune without using zappiti they work also
my folder structure is:
O:\media\series\true blood\season 5\True Blood S05E02\VIDEO_TS
O:\media\film\Bride Flight\VIDEO_TS

my set up is: dune base 3.0
pc windows 7 professional (all files on one HDD) shared to dune
export path: O:\media

movie folder: O:\media\film

series folder: O:\media\series

I hope some can help?

Luis February 14, 2013 at 12:58 pm

I’m hoping to receive in a few days an HD Base 3d. I will have and external HDD conected to my laptop via usb, the drive letter for the HDD is H. My videos will be located in H:\Videos\Movies but when I click properties in the Movies folders and click the sharing tab (Windows 7) it shows Network Path:\\LUIS-VAIO\Movies.

I need someone to explain me the difference between the share path and the absolute path and how to configure my Dune with Zappiti. I have read the Damian guide but Im not that computer friendly and does not understand the Samba thing. I wil apreciate a dummy version.

Thanks in advance.

Anthony April 10, 2013 at 10:01 am

I’ve had mine all set up for a while. I export to my NAS and it all works fine. I have a Dune H1 media player. Anyway, I don’t understand why you say you need to have the USB thumb drive always attached. I took it off and I still have the Zappiti folder accessible from the shortcut in the favourites list.

Damian April 10, 2013 at 10:40 am

That was a requirement way back in 2010 when I wrote the guide.
