3.0 Patch 3 for HP MediaSmart Server and DataVault

Forum member Ruben Rocha has spotted a software update package for the HP MediaSmart Server and HP Storageworks X510 DataVault products. The software package shows a version of 3.3.1.35433 and appears to be branded as Patch 3.

I have spent some time digging into the installer package, and discovered that the only change is to fix one of the issues Alex Kuretz posted about previously in his article How To Fix Twonky Issues in 3.0 Patch 2, specifically the section regarding modifying audtranscode-mp3.desc to fix the error deployed in Patch 2.

Lets hope Patch 4 isn’t far behind, and the high CPU issue people are exhibiting with the current version of Twonky are resolved!

The patch is available on HP’s website for a manual install; no doubt it will be available for automatic download shortly.

Thanks for posting! I downloaded and immediately saw a CPU improvement. Previously, I was stuck at 99-100% for both CPUs and now I am between 25-68%. Yippy!

what will happen if i install this update but i have already manually editted my desc file?

Nigel Wilks March 24, 2010 at 8:06 am

It will just overwrite the file, the contents are exactly the same as what Alex posted previously (if they differ, back the file up first)

Hey Guys,

I have upgraded my EX470 yeterday to 3.0 software. It already has the Power Pack 3 mentioned here. The CPU utilization is still constantly 100%. When I stop Twonky, it goes down to 4-5%. There is also this demigrator.exe using the CPU which I have no idea about what it does. Nonr of these were happening with the old version. I have 2GB ram and LE-1640 processor. I cna’t evne imagine what could have happened with the old Semptron processor. I have a Athlon X2 3800+ SFF EE on the way. I hope it can handle this Twonky nightmare :(((

Any clues about how to lower the CPU usage of twonky but still have streaming available?

Cheers,
Mert

I have not updated to the patch 3 waiting to see if any new problem comes to light. Aparently the twonkey problem is fix but people are still having problems.
One thing i notice is that most of the issues are on the ex47x series. Is any body with the other series having problems?

I dont want to upgrade and spend another week trying to fix the problems.

I believe Power Pack 3 is different from Patch 3. Though, I have not run the installation disks yet myself until I feel comfortable that the show stopping issues have been figured out.

I find that media streaming is vastly overrated at least within the confines of my home. My understanding is that in the DLNA spec, it handles stereo audio at best. Using my WDTV Live with media streaming I cannot even see the existence of files with Dolby 5.1 or DTS or HD audio. If I access the network shares directly without streaming, I get the best that my WDTV Live can deliver (using 802.11n) which is pretty amazing!!!

Cubanblood,
I upgraded my EX470 and it worked flawlessly. Twonky complied the list of my files in less than 35 minutes and did not hang up once. I see where a lot of people are having issues but it actually worked better on my EX470 than on my EX490.

DO NOT USE MEDIA COLLECTOR.

CubanBlood March 27, 2010 at 1:10 pm

eidos:
Thanks for the advice. I have never used the Media Collector. Its garbage.

I think i am going to install the Patch 3 tonight when i get home. Will see what happens.

OK, I give up. How do I install the patch MSSDV33135433ServerUpdate.exe?

I tried running it on my PC, and it says it needs to run on the Server.

I try running it on the server using Remote Desktop and it says “Windows cannot access the path or file.. You may not have permissions…”

I try using Properties to “Unblock”, set Admin permissions in Security, etc… Nothing works.

I cannot find instructions on HP’s web site or HP help. What next?

Thanks

Nevermind. The WHS automatic update just found and installed the 3.3 patch on its own.

Well since the version 3 patch 3 in my opinion is broken as far as twonky is concerned.
Has anyone heard anything on when we can expect another update.
I have reached the point that I disabled twonky 5.1.1 for now. And installed ps3 media server.
If I knew that twonky 5.1.2 or 5.1.3 resolved the issue I would just purchase it out right and be done with it.
But then I guess I would need to reinstall it with every hp update I get afterwards.

What happened to Patch 4 to fix the Twonky bug?

I really don’t want to wipe all my videos and start over.

Alex Kuretz April 23, 2010 at 8:11 pm

I’ve not heard of any patch 4 planned, but HP doesn’t tell me everything.

Chris Brown April 23, 2010 at 10:09 pm

Interesting. That is very unlike HP not to fix a known bug (esp. when the solution is already available).
