HP has been pretty quiet since they announced a future software update for the EX470/EX475 first generation servers and European availability of the MediaSmart Server. We did get the promised Online Backup and Mac Backup features to enhance the functionality of the EX470 and EX475, and the LX195 was released around the same time, which all added up to a busy few weeks for the MediaSmart Server team.
We’ve now seen our first glimpse that something new may be in the works, thanks to a test Software Update package recently discovered by WHSHack.com that is available from this link. The update is a very simple test package that only includes a single HPMSSUpdateTest.dll file along with a few registry entries, and unfortunately for us doesn’t hold any real clues that I was able to find other than a version number of 3.1.0.00000.
That version number is quite interesting, however, as the current shipping version of MediaSmart Server software is version 2.5, so it doesn’t take a very big leap of imagination to speculate that this must be a test package designed to verify the Software Update functionality of a 3.0 version of the MediaSmart Server software.
Things get even more interesting when you recall that the original MediaSmart Server EX470/EX475 servers are all running a 1.x version, and the EX485/EX487 servers are running a 2.x version. Could this 3.x version be an indication of a new hardware revision of the MediaSmart Server on the way from HP? Or is it perhaps just the update that HP promised back in May? What do you think?
